NPC's Robert Rossi and Lysette Devlyn; Extended Care; NYC; Thursday night
He walked into the Extended Care unit that was set up to look like some sort of amazing spa, but in all actuality it was at base a Hospice and they'd sent Lys here to be comfortable until she died. He smiled, he had hope for her and he told her of all the things they would do when she got better, but Robert Rossi wasn't a stupid man. His Lys was dying.
He walked down the hall, smiling and nodding at the nurses that knew him all by name, and flanked by two of his biggest and toughest men. It wouldn't be necessary for a regular trip to see Lys, but this time he had something special and he just couldn't take any risks.
Her room was elaborate and comfortable because really, he would have nothing but the best for her. The only thing that made it look even remotely like a hospital wer the machines and IV's sitting around the large bed and the very frail-looking bald woman laying in the middle with pale skin and bags under her eyes.
The chemo made her sick all the time and her hair had just fallen out two days ago. Lys was a proud woman and in her time had been more than a little vain. It hurt him to see her like this because he knew she had to hate it and that all of it was for nothing. He was going to lose her anyway. She also refused to allow him to say a word to Isabella. They smiled and held hands and Lys made her voice stronger when Isabella came to visit, but it was all a hoax designed by Lys to not make Isabella any more sad than she had to be before it was time.
"Hey handsome," Lys said in a soft voice, opening her eyes and giving him a serene smile. "What will the neighbors think, you sneaking in like this to see me in the middle of the night?"
He chuckled. It was something she'd said to him often when they were young and sneaking around, and as always, he gave the same response. "I don't give a damn what the neighbors say. I'll come see my girl whenever I want."
She laughed too and it was still her laugh, just with the volume turned down. "What brings you here at this hour?"
His hand slid to the pocket of his coat and cupped the heavy weight as he took the chair next to her bed and scooted it in as close as possible. "I've got something I wanted to show you. Do you remember that diamond Isabella's friend was talking about? The one they were showing in his museum?"
Lysette's eyes, which were cloudy with fever and likely pain sharpened a little. "Yes."
"I know you wanted to see it," he said as he removed a large lump wrapped in black velvet cloth from his pocket. "I know you couldn't go to it, so I brought it to you."
He unwrapped the diamond and held it through the velvet, smiling at the way Lysette gasped and her eyes lit up.
"Bobby! How did you get that?"
"Don't worry about it," he soothed and his hand lifted to stroke over her head and the scant scattering of dark brown hairs that still clung to her head. "Isn't it beautiful though?"
"Dear God, I've never seen a rock so huge," she breathed, looking at it with awed eyes.
"It's flawless," Robert said, and he knew a thing or two about diamonds. "Look at how clear it is. It's just beautiful. Impractical, but beautiful."
Lysette laughed and took the diamond from him, holding it up to the light and looking at it. "Could you imagine trying to wear that? I mean, how could you?"
"I certainly wouldn't want to try," Robert said with a fond smile, watching the way the she examined the diamond and listening as she jabbered away. It had been a risky and dangerous move to have the diamond stolen just to show her, but it had been worth it to see her light up that way. It would always be worth it.
