He stopped rubbing his head and glanced at the pads of his fingers, apparently looking for blood. Satisfied there wasn't any he closed the fridge and started twisting the apple by the stem so as to remove it.
As he did so he started moving toward the cupboards.
"Nothing waiting for me there," he shrugged. "Figured I'd stay on and get a leg up on some work."
