Apt 14249, evening
Although there had been times in the past when Bella had done things she bitterly regretted, she was not a stupid woman, nor was she blind to what was going on around her.
That Deacon had to leave tomorrow on business was sad, but from what she had heard it happened fairly frequently. So there must be more to it than that or why would the atmosphere in the flat be so filled with foreboding and why should Charlie's cheerful expression be so at odds with his tense body language.
Nia picked it up too and was fractious at bed time and clung to Daddy D, grizzling, while he sang to her and Charlie hurried to the kitchen to, from the sound of things, throw the dishes into the washer.
Bella followed him and put her hands on his shoulders, feeling the flinch, then put her arms around his chest. "He'll be back soon," she murmured, her cheek against the sharply angled shoulderblade and, "I know," he replied, but the hesitation had been too long.
Bella held him tight for a moment more then went to make tea.
Tea didn't solve ALL problems but it made them easier to bear.
