Andy led him to the best aspect of the painting. It was a little sketchier than the usual Roth style giving it a great sense of immediacy, as though it had been set down just that moment.
The background was only suggested - green billows of foliage and brighter patches implying space and sunlit grass, but the figures were rendered truly. A bench with Deacon's body extended along it, one knee bent, booted foot against the arm, other foot against the floor as he lounged. On his chest the sleeping baby, curled like a cat, had a blissful look on her face. The curve of her spine was echoed in the bulge of the man's bicep. The lace edging her frock, merging with and partially covering the blue green tattoo around his arm.
It was one of Andy's very favourite pieces, out of a houseful she'd have been proud to own.
