The Lamb, Evening, Joe and Adam
"Say it."
It had been awhile since they'd had to meet at the Lamb for one of their heart-to-heart chats, but Adam had made sure not to disappoint.
"Say it," Adam demanded again, when Joseph just stared at him.
"Fine," Joseph finally said, sighing heavily. "I promise. I don't know why I'm promising, but I promise."
"Because," his tone was just as sharp as before, but Adam leaned back in the booth now, scratching his shoulder blades against the back rest, put physically at ease by his brother's promise. "No one should have to worry about it over the holidays."
"Right. Except for us," Joseph shrugged nonchalantly, but his tone was drier than the glass in front of him.
"Well, right, 'cept for us. Because I have to know, their my orders. And you have to know, 'cause, well, they'll call you if something happens and I thought you should be warned." Adam shrugged too. "You know, courtesy."
Joseph blinked at that. "What about your parents, they won't call them?"
"No," Adam shook his head. "I filled that paperwork out awhile ago, changed my immediate contacts."
"Bet mommy loved that."
Adam snorted in amusement, "Not really, no. Dad didn't either, but he understands. Besides..." He looked at Joseph carefully. "Would give you three a reason to get together, bond."
"Oh yes," now Joseph snorted, "That's exactly what I want to do. Bond with my brother's foster parents over his death. Good times."
"That's not how I meant it and you know it." Adam rubbed his shoulders against the wood again. "It's just-your my brother, their my parents. Maybe not biologically, but in every other sense. You three should get along."
Silence reigned for a long moment, then Joseph conceded by way of a softly spoken, "Your mother doesn't like me."
"She doesn't know you," Adam corrected, tossing back the rest of his drink. "All she knows is that your the guy I crossed the country for. Makes her a little jealous to know I'd leave for you, and I won't go back for her."
Joseph thought that was a little harsh, but wisely said nothing.
"Anyway," Adam circled the conversation back to his original point and topic at hand. "It's a whole year away. Maybe by then our new president will have kept true to his word and I won't have to. No sense worrying everyone for what could be nothing."
"God willing," Joseph sighed softly. He could hope, but somewhere deep down he doubted it and felt horrible for feeling that way.
Adam nodded, sharply. "Exactly." Then he slipped from the booth to go get another drink, leaving Joseph alone with his thoughts and sudden worries until he returned.
