Apt. 584, Early Afternoon, Adam
Being the weekend, Adam slept in. Dozing away the morning, and a good chunk of the early afternoon, was completely normal for him, but eventually he was roused from his dreams by a soft thrumming noise that just wouldn't stop.
It wasn't unpleasant per say, but certainly distracting.
He rolled onto his back, frowning and blinking up at the ceiling, trying to clear away the sleep from his eyes and to bring the mysterious, out of place black shape on the ceiling into focus.
It slid into focus-and everything stopped. His movement, his breathing, his heart as a leering, tooth split face gazed down at him.
The creature hung from the ceiling like a bat, the humming noise the sound of it's excited breath as it took his measure, obviously sizing him up. A tendril of thick, slimy drool trailed from it's pebbled lips, hanging in the air like a glittering thread.
Adam thought immediately of the gremlins from last Halloween, unable to look away from the lamp-like eyes watching him.
They regarded each other for what could have been hours, but was probably only minutes, then, curling it's lip with a snarl, the creature leapt, plummeting down onto Adam's chest, claws extended, raking at his face.
There was a sharp stab of pain, a slice of heat along his temple and Adam gave himself up to instinct, no time for thought. Flames erupted along the length of the bed, engulfing the blankets, the mattress, him and the demon.
The thing howled, and jumped away, crashing into the dresser and knocking several photos and knick-knacks from their perch, sending glass and porcelain in all directions. Adam pushed himself up in time to see it spring again, diving into the long shadow cast by his desk where it paused.
Smoldering, it's skin blackened and blistering, it spat its fury at him in an almighty hiss. Then it jumped away one final time, disappearing through the open heating grate-apparently how it got in. It clicked and scrabbled against the metal duck work, but finally vanished, leaving Adam alone in silence broken only by his panting with a gouged ceiling, a ruined bed, and several smashed possessions.
And also, he would notice after his heartbeat had returned to normal, a gash above his right ear that steadily oozed blood in a weary trickle.
