290 Gallery, Honolulu, and after
"Okay I think that's fine," Charlie said and smiled at Miss Tanaka. This was his third and final visit to the gallery and he had just about got over his shock that she wasn't the pretty twenty something he had been expecting from the photo on the website, but a chunky fifty something with a grandaughter. However, though she may have been a little evasive about some of her personal attributes, he couldn't fault her on her professionalism or her eye for a good painting.
She grinned at him and said, "And I want the exhibition Coo had, the one with the guy with the ass. You know the photos I mean. With the two of them cuddling on the rug and the little one with his teenie weinie."
"Er - yeah," Charlie said, going rather pink. "I'm sure we can arrange that. In fact," he looked around with a relieved smile, "here's the photographer now."
"Teeny wienie?" Andras said, walking in and taking off his sunglasses. "Charlie, what have you been telling her?"
Beat.
"Oh, hello. I'm Andras Toth."
Mimi chuckled and put out her hand. "Pleased to meet you. I was just telling Charlie I wanted the exhibition you did for Coo in San Francisco. The one with," she chuckled again, "those two guys making out. And the one with the chaps. We'll sell a million."
"Oh yes, I'll make you a million copies and will get stinking rich!" Andras said. She didn't seem to know who it was, so it was probably better left that way. "Those always sell well. I got lucky there."
"You weren't the only one," Miss Tanaka guffawed. "The big blond in the chaps is a honey. The other model, the one with the," she made a gesture with her pinkie, "must've thought it was his birthday. There's a lot of guys who'd have loved to be in his position. That was a really good idea of yours."
Charlie, crimson, sat on the edge of her desk, swinging one sandalled foot and continued to look through the papers as though he hadn't just heard his manhood maligned.
"Oh, they're a couple," Andras said. "That little fellow has lots of other qualities to recommend him. Fucking great people, but of course, for this, I couldn't have them recognisable -- not professional models, see? The steamier photos from the shoot, and the ones with the head on, they got to keep for themselves."
"There's more?" Mimi asked. "Who do I have to bribe to see them."
"A good artist never betrays the trust of his models," Charlie said with a grin at Andras, as he thought of the choice couple of pictures currently in his wallet - ones with no weinies showing at all. "and yeah I think we could ship them in time for a nice summer exhibition. When would be best? May? June?"
"Could we make it a bit later?" Andras said. "I've already agreed to one monster commission in June, and I need to prepare those million copies -- August?"
Miss Tanaka nodded. "Good time for holidaymakers," she said.
"After the schools go back?" Charlie suggested. "That's when you get the posh folk who don't want masses of ankle biters rushing around disturbing them."
"And they are the one's who spend," Mimi agreed. "I'll get the dates to you and you can decide how and where you want to publicise it. Also if you want to launch it with a party." She grinned. "We like our parties."
"So do we," Charlie agreed.
"And I!" Andras said. "But I like the way you do parties here, too. Hawaii is special. Not just the folklore -- people are more relaxed somehow."
Charlie glanced at Andras, brows raised in surprised, because he hadn't been aware that there WAS any folklore. But then he had been rather preoccupied - Deacon in shorts guh.
Speaking of which - he glanced at his watch. "Hey, we'd better go. We're meeting the others for lunch in a few. Mimi, I'll drop back later this afternoon and thanks so much for the welcome."
He got off the desk and gave her a hug which she returned enthusiastically. "It's been grand having you here," she said. "You come back - and bring that Deacon with you. I want to meet him. And you too Andras."
"See you," Andras said. "And yes -- Deacon's always worth an ogle. That man has a build, and a grin, and eyes and hair..."
He grinned at her, then winked at Charlie.
Charlie pretended not to notice. "I'll definitely bring Deacon next time," he said. "But right now I'm hungry." He rubbed his stomach. "See you later, 'kay? C'mon, Andras."
"Food! Food is good!" Andras declared, and followed him out.
