I should probably be glad that the fish have stopped talking to me. I went for a swim in the lake and a catfish brushed me. He didn't apologize, which is unusual (they're very polite creatures). I figured he had an off day, but when the minnows didn't chant and the eel didn't ask about the next boater coming in, I thought, you know. Maybe I was deaf.

Got a new tent to replace my wrecked one, Liulfr's curled up by my feet, a pack of cloves hipster wtf, a fresh notebook for writing in, a new poem half-started, and I'm pretty sure I'll be the proud owner of a custom bike in a few weeks. Just gotta get my license first. I saw him as I was walking back from town, saw he was for sale, and fell in love. The guy selling him took me for a ride, and next thing I know I was in line at the RMV filling out the paperwork to get my permit.

Baby boy, eldest, little one, maybe we should all get new rides and make our own gang, invite a few people like Aimon, Jake, Lysander, and Max? It'll be fucking sweet. And if not, I'll take anyone interested for a ride on my new guy once I break him in. It's nice to have a plan in place again. Eh, enough of that, I should concentrate on my back to classes prep before I forget. Introducing oneself is a strange thing. Did you know that in practically every English-speaking country in the world the most universal way to greet another person is with a handshake or by waving? However, in other countries, gestures such as bowing or even embracing are more common. It helps to know what the preferred method is in whatever place you might find yourself.

Even the simple act of saying 'hello' can be different. In Afrikaans, they say hello, but they pronounce it more like 'hu-llo', while in French they have different words depending on formality. 'Salut' is more informal, but 'bonjour' is formal, but only for for daytime use, and 'bonsoir' or 'bonne nuit' are used for evening and nighttime greetings. I'm rather fond of what they say in Māori, which is 'kia ora' or 'be well/be healthy'. Oh, and in Gaelic, they say 'dia duit', which literally means 'God be with you'. I'm don't know about all of you, but I'm not sure I'd want certain Gods to be with me.

F this heat. There's good heat and then there's this. In Norse lore all terrible people went to an icy Hell, but this shit sucks all the same.

Having one of the best vacations ever. Currently in Santa Fe, because I overheard a woman talking about a "magical staircase" so of course I had to check it out for myself. As it turns out, a long time ago a chapel was made, but while it's a two story chapel, there's no staircase. The nuns occupying the chapel prayed for nine days straight, and on the ninth day a scraggly stranger comes to them, tells them he can build them staircase, but that he needs total privacy. So they leave him be, and three months later the staircase was made. The only tools he used were primitive tools, including a square, a saw, warm water, and non-native wood. The staircase had no metal nails, and no apparent central support. Later on wooden pegs were added, and the outer railing was fastened to an adjacent pillar.

The staircase itself is a thing of beauty, something I wish that I had made, but they're saying it was made by St. Joseph.
