my parents have been freaking out over the riots ever since they got wind of it. especially my mom. i tried to make them feel better by telling them i pretty much just bunnied my way through it all, but i don't think that helped.
i told her i wasn't transferring, though. i mean, it's not like the school got taken over by death eaters.

[After receiving this in her mailbox, the bounce in Iris' step has returned. While the incidents during the riot had really sent her reeling, she was feeling like her old self again. She wanted to have fun]
I know our classes have been postponed to next week, and while the reasons behind that are awful, I feel like we should take advantage of this free time! There's going to be a new moon on the 15th. Why don't we take advantage of it? I think a game of flashlight tag in the forest would be fun, yes? I don't think we always have to be in a club with alcohol to have a good time. I hope people consider it. It would be a lovely way to kick off the semester and to brush off the negative energy of the last two weeks.
And I know the point was to remain anonymous - and believe me, I want so desperately to learn who you are, but I'm going to respect the anonymity - but I just wanted to say thank you. The gift in my mailbox was the most amazing surprise I could have ever received. I absolutely love it!

I feel real fortunate that my place was out of the way of most of the protesters, but I know a lot of houses and stores got damaged in the riots, so... if anyone needs anything, I'll come help.

The best advice I can give this time is, as stolen from the great mind of Benjamin Quinn, "Listen to more Celine Dion". While no promises can be made for how this absurdity might help or hinder your healing process, it has always worked its strange magic for me and, as such, I figured sharing it would do no harm. Regardless, we ought to be quite glad that we have survived that ordeal without any deaths and I urge anyone who might have been harmed during to nurse their wounds (physical, mental, emotional) accordingly - no good will come of exasperating circumstances.

What I would say is the most frustrating aspect of the riots is not the violence or the vitriol, though they are frightening by themselves, but the ignorance. Representative Jackson's words had nothing to do with science or reason and everything to do with the same old fear-mongering and righteousness of those in power.
I would suggest all politicians take a look at their words, compare the speeches they give about incarnates to other groups we've discriminated against and examine how few differences there are in the rhetoric.
In order to understand prejudice, we have to study people. One way researchers today are doing just that is through Project Implicit.
"Project Implicit represents a collaborative research effort between researchers at Harvard University, the University of Virginia, and University of Washington. While the particular purposes of each study vary considerably, most studies available at Project Implicit examine thoughts and feelings that exist either outside of conscious awareness or outside of conscious control. I literally have no words for what happened. I keep trying to find some but, for the most part, I think I'd have to go with something I hear my students say "I can't even". The damage done to my home was thankfully not as bad as other areas in town. The boys and I have been doing whatever we can to help neighbors and businesses that weren't so lucky.

I went into town earlier to pick up a few things now that the protesters are gone, and there was the strangest feeling in the air. It was like I expected to encounter angry people everywhere I turned. Admittedly, seeing everything that got broken or destroyed by the rioting contributed to that lingering fear, and it made me wonder how I could help. So I went back to my dorm and made some kale chips and zucchini bread, and brought it around to everyone I could find volunteering to help rebuild along with bottles of water.
I think I'll do it again tomorrow, and maybe I'll see if I can help with cleaning a few places when I'm not working, too.
I also found this article, and it made me laugh. I would mention why, but I have the feeling a certain someone named Adam might not find it as funny as I did.

I believe I've invented a mixed drink inspired by blanket forts. It's the lovliest shade of blue, really. It also tastes vaguely of marshmallow, but not quite enough to be sickening. Not bad, but not something you'd want to drink a gallon of.
On that note, since you've all been flailing about lately and not making the smart choice to snuggle up with your friends in assorted blankets with sleeves, I take it some of you could use a drink. Which I would make you, if my place of employment could actually stay open for more than 24 hours.
