[Submission to The Clarion, open to all to see]
Stargazing with Ravens
Midnight tolls deep and gravely, hollow sounds spill from the churches levee,
By-passing walls to wander through the dreams of the forgotten,
Twisting roads and ever hills never allow people their fill,
Stop a moment, linger about, shadows of the lost and wanton,
Watching until they find those sparks of the downtrodden
Waiting for mere whispers low.
Jet black hair hanging forgotten, around a square face misbegotten.
His pale skin and sunken eyes lit only by a dull gray glow
Of smoky lamps, fingers stained, a passion that cannot be tamed;
Rapping, turning, searching, trudging the mud just below
The surface masked away from the world, ever a show
Let us wander through a mad man's mind.
Obscured paths and blackbirds crow feeling more than you'll ever know
A sinister looking-glass looking back to depths unrefined;
The broken pieces scattered amongst the beaten and tattered,
Never stop the careful dance towards the course of unconfined.
From dream to day, loose words spill across the blank page unresigned
Spirit of the never heart weighs heavy.
