You are all lucky you're not freshman poetry students in my class, unless you are a freshman in my poetry class. I'm having everyone memorize a poem of their choice. Any school, style, tradition, so long as it is at least 50 lines long. You should hear the groans! Yes, it is old-fashioned, but necessary. After so many readings and recitations, even the least poetic student can hear the music in the words. You understand why the author arranged them in the way they did. It's amazing! I tell them. 'Ugghh,' they say. But the recitation isn't even the worst part. Each student must pass out copies of their poem to the class. A selection from ten of the poems will be chosen and put on a quiz where the author and title must be identified. 'UUUGGGHHHHH,' they say. And in my heart, I laugh.
It's a fun game! They'll see that. So! Another game:
Post a line (or several) from five different songs. If someone guesses one of the songs (title and artist!), they will challenge you with another five lyrics. If you are stumped, you lose! If you stump, you win! The game is not fun if you try to pick songs that no one could possibly know the lyrics to. It is about the back and forth!
