Summary: The two best friends spend an afternoon having fun with an art project.
Blythe loved sharing all kinds of activities with Cai, but they’d never had fun and paintballed a painted wood plank board. It wasn’t something one would submit to museums and it wasn’t any original concept, but Blythe always found that it both got any stress out and picking the colors was a lot of fun. Someday they’d paintball for real, go somewhere and pick teams and how it all went, but for now, that board was going to be their bitch.
With her goggles on, her layers of summer clothes appearing as though she’d paintballed them too, she ran over to Cai as they met in the field where they normally had picnics. “You came!” She exclaimed, swinging her arms around her friend’s shoulders. Having been embarrassed by not talking to Cai about Liron, she hoped this would help that they could spend time together. “I have your goggles and I have all these rounds! Pick your color, there’s so many!” And there were - at least 30 different shades.
~
So did Cai. It was almost a shame how little time the both of them spent together this summer, apart from their vacation in Mexico, of course. Paintballing was the perfect activity for them to spend some quality time together and maybe also talk about things? Who knew.
Cai couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of Blythe wearing goggles to her summer clothes-- it looked so adorable and ridiculous at the same time, but it fit to her friend, she thought. “Of course, I came! How could I refuse to spend some time with you?”, she said while hugging Blythe tightly. Everything about the Liron-issue was forgotten, not that Cai could seriously be mad at Blythe for not telling her things. “And I’ve always wanted to shoot random wooden boards with paint.”
Releasing her friend from the hug, she wandered over to where all the different colors were displayed and almost immediately fell in love with one of the blue shades. Who would have thought that? She looked at Blythe and pointed to the color she wanted to pick. “Is this one okay? What do I do with it now?”, she asked, completely clueless.
~
Blythe felt similarly, as she always did. Not spending time with Cai felt criminal, unnatural, so to have her in her company again was like inhaling fresh air, being awoken after a pleasant, long sleep. She laughed at Cai’s comment about shooting boards with paint. “We could have done it in my living room, but walls don’t hold up as well as I thought they would.” If Cai had seen her bedroom wall, she would have understood. “I think we do need to actually have a paintball war sometime.”
After Cai selected her color of choice - a very lovely shade, the rainbow goddess had to admire - Blythe handed her the goggles. She then picked up one of the paintball guns, opening the attachment that rested on top of the weapon. “This is called the hopper.” She explained. “It’s quite simple, you pour the balls of paint into it.” Delicately taking the blue paint bag from Cai’s hands, she opened it and did exactly as she instructed. “It will load on its own - you simply need to make sure the hopper seals correctly or you lose your balls.” There was a pause before she giggled at what she said. “You’re free to fire, if you’d like, while I load mine.”

Cai couldn't have expressed it any better. The time she spent without Blythe during this summer was the most boring and unexciting time of her life. With her friend now being in her life again after about 3 weeks of nothing, Cai felt her spirits coming back to her. Blythe brought excitement into her life and that was one of the many reasons, Cai was happy to have her as friend. "So you have tried it in your apartment?", the water goddess asked, her smile not being able to hide her concern. "Oh yes, we should! We could recruit some of our friends to come with us. The more people, the more fun!" Cai was now very close to jumping up and down like a child.
Instead, she took the goggles from Blythe and put them on after she'd listened carefully to Blythe's instruction. She was certain that she looked terrible with them, partly because they didn't fit at all to her jeans shorts and top and partly because everyone looked ridiculous with goggles. She spun around to show off her new look and asked playfully: "Don't I look amazing?" Then she took one of the hoppers, the one Blythe had loaded with the blue balls and positioned herself in front of the plank, ready to shoot. "Glad I don't have much balls to lose," she said giggling and then shot the first ball.

One of the many things that made their friendship so dear and important was that both girls felt equally strongly about how imperative this relationship was for them, how it would be unusual and lonely without the other one. “I did,” Blythe admitted, slightly abashed, “and you can paint over the colors just fine, but not the many, many dents.” The mild dose of shame was quickly tossed aside at the shared enthusiasm for the imagining of a day filled with paintballing. “My thoughts exactly! And we both know several people who would be interested - we’re never short in friends, are we!”
It was true, everyone looked awful in goggles and Blythe couldn’t help but laugh in delight as Cai modeled her new look. “Like you just came from the walkways of Milan or Paris.” She touted. In all honesty, Cai could walk around campus in a brown potato sack and she’d still be beautiful. As soon as Blythe finished loading hers with a mango orange shade (complimentary colors, she obsessed), she joined Cai, unloading several rounds in a few seconds. Stars, shooting things with color was so much fun. “What do you think? It packs a punch!”

"Oh dear. How terrible." Carina was sad to hear that the paint more or less destroyed Blythe's walls, but then again, her friend was basically bubbling over with creativity. "But you wouldn't be you, if you couldn't turn it into another art project. I'm sure everyone will want to have dents in their walls some day, because you made it a trend." Yes, she honestly believed in this to happen and was convinced that Blythe would use the dents to her advantage. "No, we definitely are not", although Blythe's amount of friends was by far superior to Cai's amount of friends. "I think especially Effie would have lots of fun."
"Now, that's what I wanted to hear", Cai laughed. "We should clearly make our own fashion line based on goggles. It's going to be THE new trend and we started it." It was just a crazy idea and Cai knew it. But she never lacked imagination in Blythe's presence. The sea goddess was surprised that such a petite person like Blythe could fire that fast. "It really does and it's amazing!" Cai shot all of her balls. "Can I just fill the hopper with another color when I'm finished?"
~
"Your confidence in me is eternally wonderful!" She clasped her hands in between rounds. But now that Cai had mentioned it, Blythe found herself on a creativity tangent. "You know, I was thinking about stenciling a map of the moon on that wall and firing more craters and turn them into the moon's mare and crater fields! It would be out of this world!" She laughed, overcome with the joy of the idea and the bad joke. "I'll have to meet Effie, I fear I haven't had the chance of being formally introduced. But I already know having her on our team would make us unstoppable."
"As if you could have expected any less!" She chuckled. "We are going to put all those fashion majors to absolute shame. They would take classes on what we are naturally gifted at." She watched in appreciation as Cai unloaded the whole fifty pack of paintballs, drowning the board in a splendid blue. Quite impressive! "Go right ahead." She gestured to the bags, curious to see what color she would pick this time. As Cai loaded her hopper, she returned to firing patterns on the board.
~
"How couldn't I have confidence in you?", Cai asked rhetorically. She listened carefully to what her friend said and her face lit up. "Oh, I knew you would come up with a marvelous idea like that! This would be galactic!" Now it was Cai's turn to giggle at her terrible attempt to play with words. "That's my fault. I should have introduced you two way earlier. But yes, she is an experienced shooter." That might or might not have been a hint on Effie's tendency to shoot the neighbor's cat when it was about to eat her rats.
She made a theatrical gesture, then grinned. "Not everyone can be a natural talent; we are." It sounded somewhat snobbish, but it was only meant as a joke. It was amazing how much fun it was to shoot little balls and Cai couldn't wait for her second round. She wandered over to where the packs were and decided for a sunny yellow shade, perfectly fitting to this bright summer day.
~
Blythe laughed at the galactic comment - it was so much fun just being corny and silly; college students generally seemed to frown upon such things. Not they. As she continued to shoot, she did remember that Effie was the one who stunned her when she said had watergunned a cat or some such thing. "I'll be the first to say I am really glad I won't be on the receiving end of her attacks."
When Cai loaded and began firing the yellow balls at a steady rate, Blythe could see a story unfolding before them with just the three colors alone. It was like a dream.
~
They clearly should be silly more often-- it was so relieving and unusual to act like that, Cai had almost forgotten how it felt. "Oh, and I am the second. Losing with her in our team would be close to impossible." Cai was smart enough not to make a comment about the the cat had looked after sneaking into Effie's room again. "And maybe we also get Jack to join us. I can see us growing together as roommates because of that."
Even the not as artistically talented Cai saw how something colorful and beautiful developed. It was unique and their very own piece of art. "This is amazing", she cheered, both because of the fun she had with shooting and the beauty of what they were creating.
~
Blythe laughed. “If we are sure to win, this is all the more incentive for us to arrange this! To prove to everyone that they absolutely do not stand a chance!” The thought of bringing in their friends new and old, as well as others, was splendid. “If Jack would like to come, he’s more than welcome! I haven’t met him either. I need to come by your home more.” Blythe added as an afterthought, realizing she rarely visited Cai’s home. It just didn’t often work that way.
The rainbow goddess responded to Cai’s exclamation by cheering, throwing her hands up in the air and jumping about. She couldn’t think of anywhere else she’d want to be more as they continued to pummel the board with colored balls of paint.
~
"It is," Cai exclaimed. "We should do it as soon as possible! Maybe soon before classes start again?" Because seriously, was there a better way of welcoming a new semester with all friends together? "You definitely should. I admit, my roommates are rather-" she paused, "special, but they are good souls." It was true, Blythe really didn't visit very often, but she and Cai spent lots of time outside together, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. At least, they did things together.
It was pure joy to watch Blythe cheer and Cai couldn't help but join in. This probably was one of the best afternoons they've spent together. Ever.
