Once upon a midnight dreary, I woke with something in my head...
Characters: Ares (tasteofwar) & Euterpe (museicalme)
Date/Time: December 10th, mid-afternoon
Location: Montenegro Sports Complex
Rating: PG
Warnings: Language (though not too bad)
Summary: Euterpe over-reacts to Ares' attempts to ask her to lunch.
It was a glorious day. The sun was high in the sky, and although there was a chill in the air Euterpe wasn't going to let that stop her from going for a run to clear her head. Ever since catching her now ex-boyfriend screwing around on her, Euterpe had been drowning her sorrows by throwing herself into her music, but now that she was back at Montenegro she knew that she needed to get herself sorted, and a nice, relaxing run always helped.
Finding a place on the bleachers where she could leave her hoodie, she peeled off the oversize top and folded it before starting her stretches. She could hear someone else off in the distance, but didn't think anything of it since she fully intended to listen to her iPod and ignore the outside world once she actually began her run.
~*~
The sun did little to beat back the chill starting as Winter was settling in. Ares didn't care one way or the other. The girls just wore less when it was warm and distracted him from his exercise routines. He didn't actually think that he needed to exercise or practice, but it made him feel good. The adrenaline that ran through him during his running was like the low end buzz of a fist fight. It was addicting to say the least.
Running around the bend, his eyes caught the cute little ass of a newcomer to the track. He had had the place oddly to himself until then. Picking up his pace, he stopped beside her and picked up his bottle of water from near the track. "Afternoon," he said simply.
The closer look at her made Ares smirk. Great legs, short shorts even with the chill, and hadn't he seen her before? He couldn't stop himself from undressing her with his eyes. "Want some company in your run?"
~*~
Finishing up her stretches, Euterpe bent over to check her shoelaces, making sure that her trainers were tied securely. She could sense the other runner getting closer. And then slowing down. Whatever, it didn't concern her. Straightening up, she took a moment to pull her hair back into a ponytail so that it wouldn't get in her way, glancing over at the other person when it became apparent he was stopping there.
Offering him a polite grin, she blinked at the offer for company. On one hand, having someone to run with could be a good thing, but on the other hand she had no idea who this guy was and from the smirk on his face she wasn't sure she wanted to.
"Afternoon," she responded. Euterpe gave him a quick once-over as she considered the question. From his appearance he was dressed to run, which worked in his favor. "You know, if you didn't look like you're ready for some serious running I'd think you might be hitting on me, but since I've convinced myself you're not, then sure."
~*~
Ares chuckled softly. "Is hitting on you such a terrible thing? I'm a firm believer in multitasking." But if she was convincing herself otherwise then who was he to argue? Ares set his water bottle down and moved closer to her.
"I'm usually serious about running though. It gives me something to do in between practice."
~*~
Euterpe smiled in that too-bright manner of someone about to say something sarcastic. "Wow, with lines like that I'm amazed you even have the time to go running..." Her eyebrows rose as he stepped closer, forcing Euterpe to look up at him.
"If you're not serious about it today then I can easily run alone." She holds up her headphones to prove her point before putting it back down. "Dare I ask what you mean by practice?"
~*~
Running his hand over his chin, Ares kept the smile on his lips. A little play of hard to get wasn't something new to him nor something that detoured him from his quests.
"I do Mixed Martial Arts... and Close Combat- but that's through the Military program." He gave a faux shocked face in the same sarcastic note. "Dare I ask why you run?"
~*~
Mildly impressed by the fact that he was still there, Euterpe smiled- a real one this time. Unaware he took her attitude as playing hard to get, she relaxed, hoping he was done flirting.
"I grew up with a couple guys who do Mixed Martial Arts, they were pretty hardcore. I take it you're in the Military program?" She knew it was a dumb question, but she wanted to be sure. "You may dare."
~*~
He liked her smile. It was fun with a hint of attitude even if she didn't mean for it to be there. "Yeah, Counter Terrorism specialty. But truthfully- I just like fighting." Ares smirked again.
"So, why do you go running? High contact sports?" He really couldn't hold back his flirting any further than mild hinting to his dirty thoughts. Ares was interested in very few things and he wanted to see just how much energy the girl could have should he win her over with his flirting.
"I'm Arron, by the way. Arron Belmont."
~*~
She was starting to wonder if smirking was the only expression he knew. It wasn't an unpleasant smirk, but it was getting old fast. "That sounds dangerous, and let's be real here- who doesn't like fighting?" Euterpe joked.
"I go running to clear my head, mostly. I also do parkour from time to time." She knew exactly what he was implying but wasn't going to rise to the bait. Euterpe had recently come off a bad, semi-public breakup, and had no interest in hooking up with anyone. Even if he was kind of cute in an annoyingly smug sort of way. But that was besides the point.
"It's nice to meet you Arron, Arron Belmont. I'm Aria Dixon, or just Aria."
~*~
Ares chuckled. That did it, a fine looking piece of ass with an attitude and liked fighting, he was interested. "A little danger is what makes it interesting."
Lack of any danger element was boring. He never thought about it but maybe that was how he actually picked women to pursue. If they gave it up easy, then he wasn't interested. Sure, he wouldn't turn down an easy on the eyes woman looking for some, but he wasn't going to stick around.
"Nice. Parkour always looked interesting, but I've never tried it." He would have to try it if she was going to be around for it. "Nice to meet you too, just Aria. Let's run."
~*~
Euterpe had no idea that her responses were actually making Ares like her more, she was just responding as she saw fit. There was no motive there. "Hell yeah."
Despite all that, she was starting to enjoy their conversation. She preferred being around people who could give as good as they got and didn't get all offended when she called it like she saw it, and currently Ares hadn't given her reason to cut and run yet.
"Parkour can be insanely fun, but you can end up hurt if you're not careful. And sometimes, even when you are," she commented. "Let's hope you can keep up, Arron Belmont."
~*~
Letting her set the pace, he easily fell into step. No need for an energy boost; no need for a rest. Ares had been running for three hours straight. There were different ways of running to work out different muscles. He tried to keep flexible but still have muscles to show off. "I've never had a problem keeping up, just Aria. It's usually the other way around."
To see if she would rise to the challenge, he picked up his pace. His stride was longer, but to Ares this was a game or a test. Either way. He lived for the challenges. Letting her start their run had given him time to fully appreciate the muscles of her backside. A girl in those shorts was begging for his eyes to look, but she was playing hard to get.
~*~
Jogging at first to get warmed up, she picked up her pace quickly. Not exactly used to running without the comforting sounds of some fat beats in her ears for her to keep time to, she was humming one of her favorite songs to help herself along. She'd practically forgotten Ares was there when he spoke again, eliciting a nod of her head in response to the challenge he issued.
Their height difference might give him the advantage, and she knew this, but she wouldn't give up so easily. If they were running on the streets Euterpe would have had no problem employing some of the parkour tricks she knew, but this was just an ordinary track. Taking a deep breath to psych herself, she pushed herself to catch up to him, though she wasn't sure how long she could match his pace without some sort of goal to strive for. "What do I win if I keep up, special agent Arron, Arron Belmont?"
~*~
There was that grin again. He couldn't help but smile when she caught up with him. Ares knew he could keep it up for longer than she could, or from what he had witnessed throughout his life he knew. "If you win lunch is on me. And if I win I get to have lunch with you." Ares always tried for a win-win situation when flirting with girls.
He pushed forward again. Ares didn't bother to push his body to its limit of speed, he wanted to see what she could do. Maybe if he wore her down she'd be more willing to let him help her relax.
~*~
Opening her mouth to agree, Euterpe paused when she realized exactly what he'd proposed. What had sounded perfectly fine basically amounted to her having lunch with him regardless of who won. "Wow... you really want to have lunch with me, don't you?" Euterpe responded, the disbelief clear in her voice.
She shook her head, catching up to him again so they could talk this over. "Since you're not getting the fact that I'm not looking for a boyfriend, we can have lunch. As friends. If you ask nicely."
~*~
"Who said I was looking for anything? I was just proposing the outline of the challenge." He gave her his best innocent face. Funny how she jumped to a boyfriend conclusion. He was never one for titles and never stayed with anyone long enough for it to matter. "You can take the challenge or lose." Ares tilted his head to the side, smiling. Again he stepped up his pace ever so slightly.
~*~
"Oh I'm sorry; I thought you were flirting with me because you like real women, not skanks. I'm not the hit it and quit it type." She stopped where she was, the fact that she might be overreacting not occurring to her. All she was concerned with was that this guy was coming off exactly like her ex. "I guess I lose. If you want to collect on that lunch you can find me." With that, she turned and began running back towards where she left her things.
~*~
Ares was surprised by the sudden change of direction in her attitude and then her feet. "Oh come on." He yelled after her. Ares changed directions to follow her. "Does lunch with me really sound like I was looking for a skank? I'm not sure lunch would be necessary if I thought you were one." The wording might not have been eloquent but Ares was not known for his eloquence.
"Hey, don't leave. Come on. Let me buy the amazingly just Aria a coffee at least, if not lunch. You were going to agree to the challenge anyhow." He wasn't going to let her go that easily.
~*~
Euterpe didn't want to listen to what he was saying, having already had just about enough of dealing with smug assholes who seemed to think anything with tits and a vagina lived to be flirted with. However, Euterpe did hear what he was saying, and had to admit there was a grain of truth to it. Sighing, she took a moment to collect herself before spinning around to face him again.
"Look, you seem like a cool cat, and I can't deny that you've got some charm, but I'm literally still recovering from a very recent, very public breakup, and I'm not feeling very flirty. Sorry, thanks for playing, have a nice day." She figured she'd wait for his response before walking away.
~*~
Quirking an eyebrow up, he pouted his lips out in thought. She said he was charming. His mind immediately had latched onto that. It took a moment for him to process the rest.
“I'm not going to apologize for my actions. You seemed interesting and obviously we had some things in common. It was just a simple request for lunch, nothing more than two normal people would do. But if you think that handling lunch with the opposite sex is automatically a play at getting into your pants you do need time to sit and think about things."
Girls always thought too damn much. Who cares that she recently broke up with someone, move on. The idiot was out of her life now. That was why Ares stuck to non-committal relationships. "When you see I'm not a threat you can find me. The track is all yours to clear your head with."
Ares dashed off towards his dorm, forgetting his water bottle behind. Emotional problems were not his forte. He didn't feel guilty for hitting on her. The day was nice enough that he could just run the wooded paths anyhow. Or go to the bar and find some other young thing that didn't have emotional attachment issues.
~*~
Watching as he took off, Euterpe stood there stunned at the realization that she did indeed react badly to what was nothing more than a simply friendly invitation. Shit, now she owed him an apology.
Her entire drive to run was sapped, replaced with the guilty sensation that she'd have to find some way to make this up to him. As she walked back over to collect her belongings she considered the facts. He said he was a Military major, so he obviously went to the school. That would make finding him easier.
Picking up her sweatshirt and throwing it over her arm, she found an appropriately moody song on her iPod and cranked up the volume before heading back to the school. Noticing his water bottle, she paused to grab it, figuring it could act as a peace offering. She figured she could ask Sebastien if he knew where Arron's room was later.
Euterpe knew that a simple "I apologize for being a bitch" probably wouldn't cut it, so she'd have to get creative. Thankfully, she had a few ideas.
