the violet prison for violent visions Who: Em and Desi. What: A vampire drops into We Scream and chats up a bashful zombie. Where: We Scream. When: Backdated to before April 14; after school mid-week. Warnings: TBA? Status: In progress.
As always, Em went straight home after school. Her path was forever the same; skirting the edge of town along the woods, keeping her out of sight from most people, long strands of brown hair moving over her face in any brush of the wind. Hands tucked into pockets, tromping along in her boots, eventually crossing back into a more lived-in area until she got downtown and to the ice cream shop.
There, she'd dump her backpack, change into work clothes and get her black smock and matching black latex gloves to start serving customers. Somehow, it was always easier to talk to people, take their orders, ring them up, share a funny joke or a tidbit about a horror movie when she had the excuse of serving ice cream to fall back on. Worst came to worst, she wasn't there just to entertain or be put on the spot. Plus there was always something playing in the background; Munsters, Addams Family, sometimes newer shows that seemed less enthralling than a simplistic '50s black and white show about an 'odd' family that often seemed more loving than the Beavers. Eventually, her mother would duck out to check on her brother, leaving Em to her lonesome until her father got home.
Every now and again, she'd have visits from fellow students, kids her age. It wasn't exactly a secret that she worked at the shop after school and on weekends; We Scream had become familiar enough that it wasn't weird to sneak inside or see the girl who barely said two words in math dishing up scoops of bright green, red, and yellow. So when Em saw Desi walk through the doorway, she didn't think much of it, although her mind went directly back to the awesome, low-cut Elvira costume she'd seen the other girl in at the dance. They'd all passed out before they'd found the 'friend' Desi said she'd been waiting for, and if Em were honest, she was glad she'd had even that short conversation to herself before the whole nightmare thing happened.
Tossing a wet rag back into the sink behind her, she turned back and smiled at the newcomer as the door to the shop closed softly behind her.
"Hey; don't think I've seen you in here before, unless you come when I'm not working. What can I get you?"
