It’d been a very long three days. Traveling from Warsaw to New York on Thursday took a very long time, and then there was moving Friday, shopping for furniture Saturday, and setting things up this morning. There were still things to do around the flat. She had to unpack new dishes and hang new curtains, but she was starting to feel a little settled. And she was incredibly happy that May was coming over to have brunch with her.
Sharon’s place was on Asgardia. It was a slightly larger place but within walking distance of the business district downtown. Very central, very safe. Sharon absolutely loved it.
She’d gone to the supermarket and purchased some pans and utensils so she could make French Toast. It was what she was working on around the time that May was set to arrive.
May missed having Sharon nearby, but she did appreciate her own space. It felt strange living with a roommate at her age. Still, Sharon was a friend and May was excited to see her new place and catch up. She brought a housewarming plant and a fruit basket.
She knocked when she arrived and waited for Sharon to answer.
It was very strange to have lived for these last few weeks (months?) with a roommate. Sharon had spent the majority of her adult life living alone, and sharing space with someone--with a stranger, no less--was very weird. Intimidating. And would have been irritating, except that Sharon had been paired with pretty much the best person in the history of people. She and May had become fast friends, sharing wine nights, talking later than they probably should have, pinching Peter’s cheeks and making him blush, cooking and cleaning the kitchen together…
Sharon was really, really going to miss her friend. But they were still friends! Sharon wasn’t going that far. And now that they lived in different areas, they could have sleepovers. Which were a totally different thing than having roommates.
Sharon pulled open the door and grinned brightly, then ushered May inside. “Come in! Come in! Welcome!”
May hugged Sharon with one arm, while the other still balanced the plant and fruit. “Your place is so charming! It suits you,” she said as she stepped back and glanced around. “Are you loving it?”
Sharon wrapped an arm around May and gave her a squeeze, then reached forward to take one of the items from her friend. “Thank you! I’ve still got a lot of work to do to make it more… me, but it’s off to a nice start.” She smiled, closing the door behind May. “I’ve got French toast cooking in the kitchen. I hope you brought an appetite because apparently, I went to the store with one.”
May laughed. “I love french toast,” she told Sharon. “It is nice not to cook this morning too!” She left her friends at the compound to fend for themselves, but she knew they wouldn’t starve. They had Wanda, after all. “How can I help?”
“I’ve got some orange juice and champagne. Do you want to make us a couple of mimosas? I’m just about done with the French Toast.” Sharon carried the plant with her into the kitchen--it was absolutely perfect for the windowsill above the sink--and motioned for May to follow.
May was glad Sharon seemed to like the plant. “Sure,” she agreed easily as she moved to the kitchen and went to the fridge. She pulled out the orange juice and waited for Sharon to give her the champagne. “Anyway, I’ve been dying to hear all about you since your trip! How was it? How is living here?”
Sharon set the plant on the windowsill and gave it a generous watering, then turned her attention back to the French Toast. She flipped over the slices on the pan. There were more staying warm in the oven. “Oh, the champagne’s chilling in the freezer. I just put it in there about ten minutes ago, so it should be cool.” She motioned to the fridge.
“Ah, the trip. It was fine.” Sharon’s face fell just a little as she thought about it. “My talents are being wasted. Nat’s talents are being wasted. Though, I think they sent us on this particular mission as a test of our loyalty. It wasn’t anything more than a few errands, meeting with a few dignitaries, and then returning home on time.”
May frowned at her friend’s words. “You are too talented for them to waste you,” she replied. “What sort of things would you rather do?” She knew Sharon worked for SHIELD once and wondered if she craved excitement on the job. May set to work making the drinks, but she glanced at Sharon now and again, trying to make sure she was really alright.
“I’d much rather go back to my job in New Asgard,” Sharon admitted, going a little pink at the thought. “But I’m stuck in this government contract. I want that pardon, I have to stay through to the end of its terms. And my playing along with their obligations means they leave our refugees alone. So… I’m pretty trapped for the time being.”
May’s eyes narrowed. “The president is being unreasonable. You all did what you needed to do.” She held out a mimosa to Sharon. “You shouldn’t have to give up months of your life to her whims.”
Sharon accepted the glass with a nod and a quick, “thanks,” then sipped from it before setting it on the counter so she could finish the French toast. “Might be years, considering.” She added, almost bitterly. Okay, it was definitely bitterly.
“Years?” May exclaimed. “That’s just wrong.” She felt her anger rising for Sharon and the others. “If there is anything I can do to help…”
“You’re really sweet to offer, but I’m not sure there’s anything any of us can do.” Sharon sighed. She was trying not to think about it because every time she did she got incredibly angry. “I’ve just got to keep my head down and do what I’m told. For now.” She had other ideas, though. Other things she was going to do with her head down. If they wanted her stealing information from other countries, that meant there was power and value in that information. If Sharon had it, she got to decide what to do with it.
May raised her eyebrows at the “for now” part. She didn’t want Sharon getting into trouble. “And how’s Loki?” she asked, deciding to change the subject. “Are you two still just friends?”
Sharon flushed deeply at the mention of Loki. She shrugged her shoulders, reaching for her mimosa for another sip. “We’re still just friends. But… we’re more than just friends. It’s complicated.” She sipped and set the drink back down before pulling the last of the French Toast off the pan and turning off the burner.
“He’s a god, and I’m a mortal. I’m realistic about how there’s no happily ever after here. Even if it was what we both wanted, it isn’t possible.” Sharon dug the plates of French Toast that were warming in the oven out and set them on the table so they could start eating.
May frowned. “I don’t know if I believe in that,” she said. “You really think that would come in the way of love?” She laughed. “Not that I am saying you are in love or anything, but if you both have feelings for each other…” She plated some french toast. “Honey, you should be happy.”
“It’s fine,” Sharon said, though it wasn’t really obvious who she was trying to convince. “It’s fine. I’m okay.” She plated some French Toast, too, but paused so she could sip from her mimosa again. “I’m happy,” she added, though she was still trying to convince herself more than anything else. “I’m just glad that he and I still have our tea dates. I look forward to them so very much.”
May reached over and touched Sharon’s arm briefly. “I’m glad for that,” she replied. She took a bite of her food. “This is wonderful,” she added. “Where did you learn to cook? Family or…?”
Sharon beamed. “Thank you, May. It’s my mother’s recipe. They’re down in Virginia. I hadn’t seen them in ages, but when the portals opened up we started Video-chatting.” She was particularly close with her father. “The secret is adding vanilla to the egg mixture.”
“I’m glad you still can contact them,” May replied. “Makes it a little less lonely, I hope.” She certainly felt less lonely with Peter and Ned around.
“A lot less lonely. I have my biological family alongside my chosen family.” Sharon gave May a warm smile. “I was thinking about inviting my mother and father up here for a visit eventually. It’s hard when I’m not sure about my work schedule.”
“Well, if you do invite them, I’m happy to keep them company if you need to run to work,” May promised. She missed her family so she’d do anything she could to support someone else in seeing theirs. “Do they know about the portals? If not, we can just keep them in the city if we have to.”
"They would adore you. I'm sure my mother would take you shopping and my father would talk your ear off." Sharon beamed at her friend. "I'll keep that in mind. But you have news, too, right? Tell me about Steve."
May blushed when Sharon mentioned Steve. She still felt awkward about the whole dating thing. Truthfully, she felt a little guilty too even though she knew Ben would want her to be happy. “We kissed a little,” she admitted. “I’m only ready for baby steps. Ben and I were together a long time.” A wistful smile crossed her face when she mentioned her husband. “Steve is a great guy no matter what though. He was a total gentleman the whole time.”
Sharon knew that Steve was a good kisser. She couldn’t blame May for that blush. “I understand. But I’m so proud of you for getting out there. Giving it a try. Think you’re going to see him again?” She asked. It didn’t work for Sharon, but she was really hoping that it would work for May. She deserved to be with a good man.
May shrugged. “We’ll see. I had fun. I hope he did too.” Either way, she was glad she went out with the man.
“I think it’s good that you’re getting yourself out there. I haven’t been on a real date in …” Sharon paused for a moment, thinking. Then she laughed. “You know what? I don’t remember. Isn’t that funny? It’s been so long, I don’t remember the last time I was out on a real date.”
May swallowed her food and gave Sharon a gentle look. “Do you want to get back out there? We can arrange that. Double date or something.”
Sharon paused for a moment. “I wouldn’t say no, but… I don’t know. I’ve got a lot on my plate with everything else going on. I suppose I would consider it? If you know of any attractive brothers who want to go out with us both?” A smirk came to her features as she took another bite.
May snickered. “Brothers, huh? Maybe we need to get on one of those dating apps I keep hearing about.” She shook her head. “I don’t even know what I’d write about myself. That is the hard part, you know?”
That made Sharon laugh. “Brothers! So you and I can be sisters-in-law. Duh.” Only not at all, since Sharon knew that neither one of them was thinking about marriage. At all. But it was a fun joke. “I’ve never imagined making myself a dating profile. We could make profiles for each other! That’s a cute idea! I never know what to write about myself, either.”
“After brunch activity?” May asked as she polished off her french toast. “Just for fun…”
“Just for fun,” Sharon repeated, nodding. It sounded like a super, super fun activity. “I’ve got a couple of laptops. I’ll get them out and we can get to work!”
