Who: Kate and Poe
What: Checking in after Kate’s broken ribs, and also there’s pizza and coffee
When: End of June
Where: Lounge
Status/Warning: Completed via Gdoc / none
There was one seat in all of the facility that didn’t hurt when Kate sat in it. One. It was down in the lounge, so she’d been sneaking down there whenever she could to sit in the chair and not have to take the painkillers (because who wants a foggy head?). Though, she had to admit, taking them was awesome and she could see why people got addicted. She was just not about that life. The pain grounded her.
Anyway, she’d snuck down to the lounge to sit in her favorite chair and wait for Poe. He offered pizza and coffee, and Kate would be an idiot to refuse such generosity. So she found her chair and slipped into it with a sigh. Her shoulders relaxed and she closed her eyes as she reclined.

Poe liked Kate so when she got hurt, he was concerned about her well being. He was glad that she finally agreed to go see a doctor and didn’t feel remotely guilty about bribing her to do so with pizza and coffee. Discovering all the different kinds of food that were available on Earth was one of his favorite things about being here so far, though he’d also very much appreciated the brief opportunity to see Leia. It gave him a sense of closure.
When he arrived at the lounge, carrying a pizza box and a cardboard drink holder with iced coffee, two droids close at his heels, he spotted her immediately and smiled. “How are you feeling?” he asked, going to set down the food and drink on the table closest to her chair. “Hope you don’t mind I brought some company.” BB-8 and D-O both beeped and whirred when he gestured to them.

At the sight of Poe with the iced coffee and the pizza box, Kate sat up abruptly. It was a mistake, though, as she’d been trying not to take the painkillers too much, and a burst of pain shot through her ribcage. She flopped back down against the seat, wincing, which was another mistake as the bump made the burst explode again. She frowned, taking shallow breaths.
“...I’ve been better,” she managed after a moment, then broke into a smirk as she looked up at him. “But pizza??”

The two droids rolled over to her and started beeping in a way that she might be able tell was almost motherly. Poe chuckled. “They say you should take it easy,” he said. “There is no more demanding nursemaid than a droid.” C-3PO was the worst though and thankfully he wasn’t here.
“It’s something called barbecue chicken,” he said, grabbing a couple of plates. “I hope it’s good.” So far, he hadn’t had any bad pizza. Or any bad food in general, really.
He put two slices on a plate and handed it to her. “So. How are you feeling?”

The droids were perhaps the third most adorable thing Kate had ever seen. Of course, Lucky and Cosmo took the first and second spots on that list.
“God, I’m salivating. Barbeque chicken sounds amazing.” She gave a little grunt as she sat up once more, and accepted the plate from him. “Smells so good.” She took a bite, then chewed and swallowed as she considered the answer to his question.
“I’m okay. Really. I just… I don’t want to get addicted to the pain medication, so I’m trying not to take it.”
***
“I thought medication was supposed to help,” Poe said. He didn’t really understand the concept of addiction the way it was on Earth since it wasn’t treated the same way in his galaxy. If something kept her from feeling pain, he thought she should use it.
The pizza did smell good though, so he grabbed a couple slices for himself and sat down to eat them rather than ask a bunch of questions.

“Well, all it does is take away the pain, not help with the healing,” Kate explained. “And people really like the way it makes them feel. It’s a warm, happy, thick, pleasant feeling that makes the world go away. I think people use it to … get high. But I don’t really like getting intoxicated in that way. At least, not that often. I want to be aware of the world around me.”
She took another bite of pizza. It was so good. “Man, I owe you big time for the pizza.”
***
That made more sense to Poe since there were substances in his universe that were similar. "You shouldn't suffer either," he said. "Is there a middle ground? Something that would take the edge off the pain without getting you high?"
He hoped so, for her sake. "And you can return the favor when I inevitably get hurt. " He knew his own penchant for finding trouble and had no doubt that day would come eventually.
***
Kate thought about how Derek was able to take her pain away. That wasn’t addicting at all, she figured, except for the part where she was pain-free. He was so kind to do it for her, but she didn’t want to take advantage. Besides, he must have had other things to do, rather than to just wander around with her, making her feel better?
She shook her head. “Not that really does much good. Some of the milder painkillers are fine for things like headaches and whatever… but broken bones are kinda a deal to themselves, right?”
And that made her laugh softly. “Dude, I’ll so return this favor. Probably just for a random Friday afternoon. Doesn’t have to be a broken bone for this girl to want to eat pizza.”
***
Poe laughed as well. “I won’t turn that down. Discovering all the different kinds of food available here is one of my favorite pasttimes.” When he wasn’t working on restoring the Asgardian fleet at least.
“How long will it take to heal completely?” he asked, unsure since he’d never had a broken bone and he also assumed medical intervention here was very different from what he was used to.
***
“Hey, I like food. I can help you on this quest.” She gave him a grin as she lifted the pizza for another bite. The pizza was good. But then again, it was pizza. Even when it was bad pizza, it was still pizza. Kate would eat it. Good pizza was better, and if Poe wanted to find all the good food in the world? Count Kate in. She’d be on that train in a heartbeat.
“Six weeks from the time of injury?” Kate said, frowning. “It might take longer, but I’m young and healthy, and I heal pretty quick. So early August is the day I’m aiming for. Until then I have to take it easy, keep up with the pain meds, and … y’know… not do stuff. Which will drive me absolutely insane, I’m sure.”
***
“Well, I’m happy to offer whatever distractions I can,” Poe said with a grin. “I don’t think eating food should be detrimental to your healing.” And if she wanted to be his guide to all delicious things on Earth, he wasn’t going to say no.
***
“So long as I’m not lifting heavy things or falling on my back, I think we’re good.” That would give poor Kate something to do to distract her from being stuck resting.
“Here’s to exploring the foods of the world.” She said, lifting up her pizza as if in a toast.
