Of course, Bucky was an idiot and stood near Steve, Nat, and Sam the whole time. And when Ross and his squad started taking things apart, he was one of the first to try to protest. Which also meant he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When the system blew, Bucky was first hit with a wave and then, grabbed onto one of Ross's men on instinct, trying to help the poor bastard.
Unfortunately for Bucky, the force was too strong for both of them. And despite his grip, they were both pulled into the portal before he could even think of letting go to save his own skin (not that he would have).
