Stiles had spent most of the day playing video games. He hadn't meant to, but he kind of lost track of time. Not that it mattered. He didn't have anything planned to do today. If his stomach hadn't reminded him what time it was, he probably would've just kept on playing. But it was lunchtime and he needed food.
He had made his way into the kitchen and started looking through the fridge, trying to find something that would look good to eat. He had heard footsteps, but didn't turn around immediately. So many people lived here, it could be anyone and honestly, he hadn't talked to too many of them.
When nothing caught his attention, he closed the fridge door and then finally glanced over his shoulder to see who had been in the kitchen with him. "Oh," he quickly turned around, "Hey, Lydia. Didn't know it was you." If he had, he wouldn't have ignored her.
*
Coming to this world--being torn out of that Jeep and tossed into this strange, alternate reality--was incredibly confusing and disorienting. And then to find that Derek Hale was here but didn’t know her, that Cora Hale was here, that Scott was here but not from the same time she was, and that Stiles was here, too? The Stiles she didn’t remember but should have remembered? She had a lot of things to wrap her head around.
It’d taken a while to start to feel a little more at ease here, but eventually she felt like she might fit in here. Having Scott and Stiles around helped for sure. Even though the situation was very different from the one she’d left in Beacon Hills. (Stiles and Scott and Kate?) She was actually starting to feel a little… antsy? Bored? There was only so much Wikipedia a girl could read, and so many hours she could spend in front of the television before she started to feel absolutely crazy.
She headed down to the kitchen in search of a Diet Coke, and broke into a smirk at the familiar form in front of the fridge. “Hey. Nothing interesting in there?”
*
“No, not really,” he told her as he went for the pantry and started to look through there. He did stop for a moment before glancing back at Lydia. “How are you settling in?” He remembered how weird the first few weeks felt being here, so he wanted to see how Lydia was doing with all of this.
*
Lydia paused for a moment. She opened her mouth as if to respond, then thought better of it and closed it. A moment later she opened her mouth again, having come up with a different answer… but then closed it again with a gentle shake of her head. Truthfully, there were no words to this place. No words to how she felt here. She missed her mother.
“Well, I’m settling in. That’s a good first step, right?” She moved to the cupboard where she remembered the mugs living and pulled one out, then started digging around for hot tea.
*
Stiles watched as Lydia looked like a fish out of water. Yeah, that seemed like a good answer. She would get used to all of this. He did. It took a while. And meeting Kate helped a ton.
“Yep, it’s a good first step,” he said as he turned his attention back to the pantry full of food. “You’ll get used to his place,” he told her as he grabbed some ramen. “And, hey, bonus, nothing is trying to kill us here unlike home.”
*
Ah. Yes. Well, there was that. Every few weeks it felt like they faced another threat to their lives. So far here she hadn’t felt any threats. At least, so far. She hadn’t been here all that long yet. Maybe there was more to it than what she could see here.
“Bonus,” she repeated, then grinned as she wrapped her hands around the box of hot tea. “How long did it take you to get used to things here?” She asked. “And how long have you had this three-way thing with Kate and Scott?”
*
Stiles thought about it for a moment as he moved around the kitching, grabbin the things he would need to make his food. “Two, maybe three weeks.” He paused for a moment before he looked over at Lydia. “Sooo, you saw that conversation, huh?” It wasn't like he hid it. He didn’t want it to be hidden. “It’s been a couple of months of us trying to figure it all out. But it became an official thing on Christmas.”
*
“I put two and two together.” Lydia was a smart one, wasn’t she? She put the electric kettle on, then settled her tea bag in her mug. Now all she had to do was wait for the whistle of the machine. In the meantime, she turned to watch him while they talked.
“Official thing… the three of you? How does that work?” She asked, folding her arms across her chest.
*
“We can either be together at the same time or we hang out with one another individually. At least that’s how we’ve been doing it.” If there was some other rule to it, he had no idea. It wasn’t like this was something he had done before. But what they were doing right now seemed to work for the three of them.
*
“...and you don’t get jealous?” Lydia would absolutely get jealous. She wasn’t super great at sharing, though she supposed to each their own? Maybe this was working for Stiles and Scott. “--if that’s too personal of a question, you don’t have to answer.”
Leaning back against the counter, she surveyed him. “It’s good to see you so happy, however it works. Do I need to give this Kate person the shovel talk?” --that was definitely a tease.
*
“So far…nope.” Could that happen in the future? Maybe. He really had no clue how this was going to play out.
“You could,” he said with a slight laugh as he leaned against the counter, looking over at Lydia. “But I don’t think your threats will scare her.”
*
It was still early on, too. Lydia was intrigued and hoped that her friendship with Stiles was strong enough that he’d keep her in the loop. She wanted to support him. She wanted him happy. If this made him happy? She would back it one hundred percent.
“No?” She scoffed. “I’m a badass banshee,” Lydia said, turning around to take the electric kettle pot and pour herself boiling water over her teabag. “What’s she got?”
*
A smile crossed his lips. Yeah, Lydia wasn’t wrong. She was a pretty badass banshee. “A bow and arrows. She’s pretty good with them,” he said as he grabbed a bowl for his noodles since they were done. “She does the whole world saving thing back in her own world. That’s why I don’t think she’d be too afraid of you. But if you want to do your thing, I can't stop you.”
*
Lydia was mid-pour when he mentioned a bow and arrows. She put the kettle down and turned to him. “....you’re dating an archer?” And then another thought jumped into her head. “Scott is dating an archer??” There were flashes of Allison running all through her mind. This was just too weird.
“We’ll see. I’m more intimidating than you give me credit for.” She turned to finish pouring the water into her mug.
*
“Yeah…” he said slowly. “Yeah…” he repeated. It did take him a moment to get why Lydia was asking that question. Allison. It wasn’t something that he had thought about before, but he was now.
“Okay, true, you can be.” There had been a few moments in time where Lydia might have intimidated him.
With his noodles done and in a bowl, he grabbed a drink and then grabbed his food and sat down at the table.
*
Weird. But Lydia didn’t have any right to say anything, didn’t have any control. (As much as she wished. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if she could control everything?) “...huh. Well, I’m looking forward to meeting her.”
A moment later, Lydia pulled the tea bag out of her mug and tossed it in the trash, then joined him at the table. “So… what are you doing about finishing high school?” They were both eighteen and didn’t technically need to finish… but Lydia wanted to go to college some day. She needed the paperwork. “How does it all work? What about our Driver’s License numbers and social security numbers and… are we even legal here?”
*
“You think it’s weird. I can tell.” He had known Lydia enough to figure out what she might be thinking when it came to something.
“I’ve been going, but I think I’m going to see if they have a test that I can take so I can graduate now.” If they were still home, he’d just finish it with everyone else. But this wasn’t home and he really didn’t feel like dealing with school here. He would rather just be done with it. “Didn’t you get all of the paperwork for all of that stuff when you first arrived?”
*
Lydia wouldn’t meet his eye as she shook her head. “I don’t think it’s weird.” She totally did. Finally, she turned to look at him, and gave a sigh. She could tell that he could tell it was weird for her. “All right, fine. I think it’s weird. I mean, after Allison? And you and Scott together with her? It’s just… unusual.” --just another word for weird.
“They’ve got to have some kind of GED system in this world. I had enough credits to graduate last year, but I suppose that doesn’t matter now.” She’d have to prove herself worthy like everyone else. “Nnnnnno.” Lydia thought back. She wondered if Derek wanted to get rid of her for some reason. Now she realized that it was just as weird for Derek--them being here and all--as Stiles’s whole situation was weird for her.
“I’m sure I can figure it out.”
*
Stiles gave her a look that said yeah right. “That’s what I thought,” he said before taking a bite of noodles. “Why does Allison keep getting pulled into this? She’s dead.” And he’d rather not think about it since it just makes him think of the Nogitsune. “And Scott dated Kira after Allison, sooo…”
He nodded in agreement. He was sure they had something that they could take and move on from school. Which he really needed to look into. “Really?” He thought for sure she would have been told and given everything like the rest of them when they first showed up. “Talk to Sharon Carter. I bet she can help you.”
*
Lydia gave him a look like he’d grown a second head. She started to speak, adopting a quick paced tone she normally reserved for telling someone off--though it was obvious that she was trying to be supportive. She loved Stiles, after all. She wanted him to be happy. “First, Allison was Scott’s first love, so I’m sure there are lingering feelings there. Second, she was an archer, too, so I can’t imagine that this new girl’s aptitude for the sport serves as a substantial reminder of Allison. And third, I don’t know what you mean by keep coming up. I’ve only brought her up once. Who else is bringing her up?”
Then Lydia nodded. Her tea had cooled enough to sip from it, so she did so. “Sharon Carter. Got it.”
*
“And yet, after a few days of being here he’s telling me how he wants to be with me.” He was pretty sure that Scott had moved on from Allison. “You. Just you. First you mention the archer thing about Kate and then you brought her up again with the whole,” he tried to sound like her when he said this part, “I mean, after Allison?” Why did he feel like there was more to this? “Did Allison come back from the dead and Scott and her are back together again at home or something?”
The rest of the conversation was passed over. Anyway, he told her what she needed to do to get everything done that needed to be done. He was pretty sure Sharon would be able to help her. Mostly, he was just focused on the whole Allison thing now.
*
Lydia frowned at that. "You know as well as I do that there's no coming back from the dead." ...not like that, anyway. Besides, this wasn't at all what she'd intended. She didn't want him to be angry with her, she didn't want him to think she was second-guessing his choices. It was just... surprising. All of it.
Lydia took a long moment staring at him, then turned her eyes to the mug in her hands. "She was my friend, too." She said, quietly. "My best friend."
*
“After showing up here, anything seems possible to me now.” Not that their lives hadn’t been crazy before being brought here to another universe. But all of this made him pretty much believe that anything could happen.
He wasn’t angry with her. He just didn't understand why Allison was being brought up. If Lydia wanted to flat out say that she thought the threesome was a bad idea, then she should just say that.
He sighed. “I know.” He didn’t mean to make Lydia feel bad. “Sorry.”
*
The mug in her hands was swimming. Lydia hadn’t expected it, nor had she felt it coming on, but suddenly her eyes were brimming with tears. How undignified, right? She turned them up to the ceiling and lifted a hand to wipe at her face. Silly, right? It’d been long enough that she should be over this by now. Still, to her defense, it hadn’t actually been that long. And being torn from her home and the world she knew? Without her mother? It was stressful. She was emotional.
The rational explanation for why she was suddenly weepy didn’t make her feel any less…silly. Embarrassed.
“It’s fine. Really. I’m fine.” She cleared her throat, climbing up from her chair. “I should… uh… take this upstairs. I’ve got a lot of research to do if I’m going to figure out how to get our high school diploma equivalency.”
*
This was not how he wanted the conversation to go or how he wanted it to end. “Are you sure?” He knew better. But he also knew not to push Lydia either. “Okay. I’ll be here or in the other room playing video games if you need anything.”
*
“I wouldn’t want to come between you and your…killing Nazis or whatever.” Lydia didn’t spend a lot of time playing video games, so she had no idea what it all entailed. Only she thought she’d heard the boys shooting things, or driving cars, or … something. Normally while that was all happening, she either had her nose in a textbook, or was texting with some other boy. My, how times had changed.
“I’ll catch up with you later.” She gave his shoulder an affectionate pat, then turned to head out of the kitchen. As soon as her back was turned to him, she rolled her eyes at herself for being so… y’know.
*
“I wasn’t killing…I was playing Mario Kart.” Was he at all surprised that Lydia was a bit clueless when it came to video games? Nope, not one bit. He wasn’t even sure she played them or had ever played them.
“Ok,” he said, looking up at her, giving her a small smile. “Have fun with your research,” he said as he watched her leave the kitchen.
He sighed again. He’ll check on her later.
