Cisco was in the kitchen, trying to figure out exactly what it was he could eat. Unfortunately he really wasn’t doing well on that level that day. He was struggling to find anything appetizing, and the one thing this place didn’t lack was good food. So many things should have called his name, but none of them were. Pulling out chips and cheese to make some nachos, he put them in the microwave once the dish was finished and sat down with it directly in front of him. Trying to force himself to eat them. He sighed in frustration and pulled his phone out instead. The dark haired Latino played a version of animal crossing, but for mobile phones while he tried to distract himself from the pain that decided to creep down his entire body from head to toe. At some point he’d get hungry again. Food was very much a thing he typically enjoyed.
A half an hour ticked by. .The nachos had lost their appeal and had mostly gone cold. Soon he was going to have to start using the Voice to Text feature again, he could just feel it coming on, but was fighting it. And was fighting going back to his room. He’d had high hopes for nachos. That was gone though with the migraine that filled up his entire being.
Sudden giggles filled the kitchen. Kate had been out tonight, had taken an Uber home, and was now stumbling into the Facility. Sure, she probably should have tried to find someone to go out with. Maybe Zari would have gone with her. Or one of her boys. Or maybe that girl Kaylee, who was suffering from the portal taking her boyfriend away? But sometimes a girl just wanted to drink overpriced drinks, dance, and stumble home on her own. Not the smartest move, Kate. But being a superhero made her feel like she was invincible.
She bumped into the fridge on her way into the kitchen, then burst into another round of giggles as she reached for the nearby countertop to steady herself. It’d been a while since she’d been giggling, and she couldn’t really even remember what had been so funny in the first place. Then she noticed Cisco sitting at the table. She lifted her index finger to her lips and gave a gentle shushing, then missed the countertop with her hand and went crashing to the floor.
It was the giggling that brought his attention away from the phone game he was playing and caused him to raise an eyebrow. But he paid no mind to it at first, Kate could do what she wanted obviously. She was an adult, but something was off. Cisco only confirmed that suspicion when the next time he looked up was when she was on the ground. “Dios, what the hell happened?” He frowned with concern as he stood and ignored the plate of nachos to reach down and help her up instead.
Cisco glanced over at the electronic element of the fridge that gave him a time and frowned as he looked right down at her. He wasn’t much of a drinker, in fact he probably hadn’t had a drink since the karaoke thing happened. Kate on the other hand…almost every time he saw her she had a drink in her hand. Or was done drinking that night. “Let me help you.” He attempted to get her back on her feet.
When Kate hit the floor, she only laughed harder. What had started as a set of giggling turned into full-blown belly laughter with her on the floor. By the time he came over to where she was laying, she’d mostly gotten it under control. Mostly. Kate let him help her up, though it was a bit of a struggle. Once she was on her feet she stumbled and leaned against him, trying not to fall down again. “Whew! Thank you! I don’t… when did they put that fridge there?” She asked, then gave a little gasp. “Are you eating nachos?? I LOVE nachos! Can I share with you??”
Cisco helped her to a chair, the one he’d been sitting in specifically and frowned a little. “The fridge has been there forever..” He stared at her a little awkwardly. “Kate…” He started as he watched her settle in in front of the nachos he shook his head. “I can’t eat them so you can have them, but they’re cold.” He admitted with a shrug. He wasn’t sure how to help for a minute but then chewed on the inside of his lip as he looked over at the coffee pot. Putting on a pot of it, he also went to the fridge to dig out chocolate powder and ginger. Mexican mochas were actually pretty great for sobering someone up.
“How much did you have?” Super heroes weren’t invincible, that had been pounded into his head since day one of working with Barry Allen.
“Seriously jumped out at me,” Kate said of the fridge as she slipped into his chair and lifted a hand to pick at the plate of nachos. She didn’t care that they were cold, she was drunk. It definitely wasn’t the worst thing she’d ever eaten while drunk. “Why can’t you eat them?” She asked, shoving a chip into her mouth. It tasted so good. She had a couple more bites by the time he asked how much she had. Kate turned to look over at him. “Hmm? Oh. I dunno. Enough?” Her words were a little slurred, her eyes lazily lidded.
“I’m sure.” Cisco responded dryly to her attempts to sway him into thinking silly things. Cisco shrugged. “Headache.” He didn’t feel like over complicating the answer, so it was the easiest way not to. He wasn’t so sure she would remember. “Maybe it isn’t my place…but you kinda drink a lot?” There wasn’t really a delicate way to approach it. “Are you okay?” It came from a place of concern, though he wasn’t a qualified shrink or anything. He worried.
“Ugh. Headaches are the worst,” Kate said, frowning. She felt bad for Cisco, wishing she could take his pain away. “You know… I think there’s some Irish Cream in the cupboard. Or… the pantry. We could make Irish Cofffffeeeeesssss?” She said the last bit with a sing-song in her voice that only a drunk person would think was charming. Then she leaned back in her chair and turned to look over at him, nachos momentarily forgotten. “What? Why wouldn’t I be okay?”
Headaches were becoming a part of his daily life at this point, but it didn’t make them suck less. He sighed as he ran a hand through his hair and watched her slur about Irish Coffee. “Regular coffee. Idk I think that one disappeared someplace. Don’t worry about it.” Cisco chuckled a little as he shrugged and checked on the pot of regular coffee. “I don’t know, I’ve always associated drinking as an activity sad people do..so just checking. You know you can talk to us if that’s the case.” Was she even going to remember that offer? He hoped so.
Poor Cisco. Kate felt terrible for him. It was a lot easier to feel bad for someone suffering a physical ailment than to think about her own emotional baggage. The stuff that made her want to drink away her problems. The stuff that she was still struggling with because she’d pushed it away, aside, down down down. She’d never dealt with any of it. Now it was still manifesting every few days, making her miserable. She shrugged her shoulders. “Suit yourself.” She had alcohol in her bedroom if she wanted more, though she felt pretty drunk still. Didn’t need another drink. Not tonight, anyway.
“Sad? No. Well, I mean, I’ve never stopped being sad, so. I dunno.” Kate shrugged again. “I’m fine. I’ll get by. I’m a survivor.” She’d lost people before, and was likely to lose them again. It was just part of her life now. This was how she got by.
“Maybe, but if you keep up with that much alcohol it might make survival harder.” Cisco said as a matter of factly. He poured the fresh coffee from the pot into a near by mug when it finished and put one in front of her. “Maybe you should try talking to Sam at some point…he’s a pretty good listener from what I understand.” He offered a wink as he poured his own cup of coffee. Maybe it would help with the physical pain he was dealing with. Sometimes caffeine had that effect.
Kate was a superhero. She was invincible. At least, that’s what she thought. She was also young, and healed quickly. The hangovers were never that bad. So his warnings fell on mostly unhearing ears. She reached for the coffee cup in front of her and held it in both of her hands. It was really hot, but she didn’t really feel it that strongly. “Eh.” She wasn’t sure she wanted to talk to Sam. He seemed like a good guy, but Kate was fine. Besides, they all had much bigger problems than her feeling a bit blue. “I’m okay. Really, Cisco, it’s sweet of you to ask. Offer. Whatever. But I’m good. I’m cool.” She lifted the mug to blow on the coffee, then take a little sip. It was super hot, so she set it aside. Then put her head down on the table.
Cisco would have so many words if he knew she thought that way. Instead of words though he watched her take the coffee and frowned. “If you say so.” And he shook his head instead. “Maybe you should go lay down in a bed or something. I can help you up to your room if you want.”
“No, ‘m fine here.” Kate slurred all of her words. But she was very close to falling asleep right there with her head on the table. She didn’t bother even lifting it as her hand reached for the coffee cup once more. “Hmm… can’t drink with my head down.” She didn’t try it, thankfully. “Maybe it is bedtime.”
Cisco didn’t like the idea of just leaving her there, but Kate seemed to be fine with it. It isn’t like he could really force her to do anything ethically. So he just draped the hoodie he was wearing over her so she’d at least have some warmth, and shook his head as he walked off and let her sleep.
