Who: Sharon Carter and Poe Dameron
What: Checking in
When: Soon after her trip to Madripoor
Where: Poe’s work - spaceship alley
Warning: Low/None
Status: Completed via Gdoc
Sharon hadn’t seen Poe since before her work trip, and she wanted to make sure he was okay. She wanted him to know that she was okay, too. Madripoor was far more dangerous than she’d anticipated, and it made her think about her friends. She wanted to make sure she kept in close contact with them now more than ever.
So she grabbed some sandwiches and drinks, then headed out to where she knew that Poe was working on the spaceships. She was an honorary member of the Asgardian family now, so it wasn’t a problem for her to get out there. And she’d worked on procuring the space, the building permits, etc. etc. She knew her way around.
“Poe?” She called out, wandering into the giant, garage area. “Are you around?”
***
“Over here,” Poe called from under the ship he was currently working on attempting to fix. His legs were the only thing sticking out as he attempted to repair the hull. If he couldn’t figure out what to do about this crack in the exterior, the ship would never be air worthy again. He was determined to succeed.
Luckily for Sharon, BB-8 and D-O were both there ‘helping’ and rolled away from Poe to greet her and lead her back to where he was working.
***
Sharon broke into a bright grin at the sight of the droids. She’d met them before, and was completely enamoured. They were sweet, and helpful, and she followed them back toward the ship where she saw Poe’s legs sticking out from under it.
“Hey! Are you very busy? I was thinking we could have some lunch. I brought sandwiches.”
***
Rolling out from under the ship, Poe grinned up at her. “How can I turn down food with a pretty lady?” he asked, standing up and grabbing a rag to wipe off his hands. He looked at them and realized they were still pretty grimy.
“I should probably wash my hands first,” he said. “Where should we sit to eat?” There were a few really nice green spaces in New Asgard, but there was also a cafeteria in the facility.
***
Sharon grinned softly at the pretty lady comment. He was such a charmer. She certainly didn’t feel all that pretty at the moment--she was still sporting fading injuries from her trip to Madripoor (though they were far less severe than they’d been), her hair was a bit of a mess, and she was wearing comfort clothes… but it was nice of him to say. She felt flattered.
Yeah, she wondered how he was going to get his hands clean enough to eat with that rag. She turned to glance around, then looked up at the ship. “Is there a ship you can show me? I’ve never been on any of them. Do they have a place to sit and eat?” Surely one of them must… right? People have taken long trips on them over many days.
***
Poe considered the question and then nodded. “Sure, I think we can make that happen,” he said. “Stay right here and I’ll be back in a few.” He left her so he could use the restroom and wash his hands. When he returned, they were something at least resembling clean, though nothing that would pass muster in an operating room.
“Let’s check out the Hogun,” he said, leading her towards it and opening the hatch so they could enter. “This one’s actually flight ready and did one mission already.”
***
Sharon waited while he was off washing his hands. She talked to the droids, if they were nearby, and slowly wandered around looking at the outside of the ships. After a few steps further in, her side began to smart a little where she’d been cut in Madripoor. She lifted a free hand and pressed it gently over the bandage, hidden by her clothes. She was examining one of the ships when he came back.
“Is that so?” Sharon stepped over to him, curiously. She was going to need transportation on her next trip to Madripoor. “It does terrestrial flights, too? Or is it just for deep space travel?”
***
The ship wasn’t huge, but it had supported the half dozen or so of them that went to Voromir, so there was plenty of space for the two of them to have lunch. “I suppose it could do terrestrial flights,” Poe said. “I’m still getting used to the atmosphere here. It’s a lot different from back home.” At home, flying between planets was routine.
He led her through the ship to the small dining area where they could sit at the table to eat their lunches.
***
Sharon had never set foot on a space ship before, so when she walked onto this one, she was wide-eyed, taking it all in. She wanted to see and remember everything. “How is it different from back home?” She asked, though she was only half-paying attention. There were so many buttons and lights and switches and things. It was kinda like the cockpit of a 747, only bigger.
She moved to the table with him, and set down the bag. Inside were some sandwiches, drinks, and chips. “This is so cool. I bet it’s old hat to you, but it’s amazing to me.”
***
“If you think it’s impressive now, we’ll have to get you up in the air sometime,” Poe said. Even though he was used to space travel, he still loved being out among the stars and was glad he wasn’t completely Earthbound here. “The ships at home are much bigger than this. Most of them. Large enough to carry a squadron of x-wings.”
He opened the bag and pulled out a sandwich, unwrapping it and taking a big bite.
***
Sharon started with a little bag of chips, pulling the packet open to dig out the crunchy goodness. The idea of going up in the air--up into space?--was wonderful. Loki had promised to take her to space once… but it hadn’t happened yet. Surely soon. Though, not when Sharon was recovering from an injury. And not when they had business in Madripoor to take care of.
“Yeah? I’d like that. Do you take all the pretty girls up into space?” She asked, teasing. “I imagine a lot of us terrestrials would fawn all over you for that chance.”
***
Poe laughed. “I haven’t used that one yet actually,” he said. “I’ve actually been too busy working to worry about that sort of thing.” He took another bite of his sandwich, not entirely sure what it was, but knowing it tasted good. Earth food was definitely worth it.
“And I don’t discriminate,” he added. “Pretty girls or handsome men. Equal opportunity here.”
***
“Really?” She asked, in regards to him being too busy for that sort of thing. “That’s a shame.” She picked at her chips a little while longer as they talked, then dug into her own sandwich. She had no idea he didn’t know what the sandwich was. (Egg salad. So good.)
“I just meant that I’m a pretty girl. I can’t speak for the handsome men. I imagine they would swoon, too--but I can’t say for certain.” She gave him a wink. “What’s been keeping you too busy to take attractive people into space?”
***
He gestured around them. “Trying to get these ships repaired,” he said. “My bosses are a bit on the demanding side.” Poe actually liked both Loki and Thor, though he knew Loki better, and he wanted to do well with the restoration project.
“Plus the droids,” he added. They really were like having children. At least how he imagined it would be to have children.
***
Sharon chuckled softly. She absolutely understood how demanding Loki could be. After all, she’d worked for Loki and Thor as they were building New Asgard--as a liaison to the United States. She helped with building permits and zoning offices, and all of those pesky things that the Asgardians might not be experts in.
“Work and family,” Sharon said, smiling down at the droids. “Sounds like you’ve got a lot on your plate. I’m glad you took some time out to have lunch with me.”
***
“How could I say no?” Poe asked, giving her a genuine smile. “You showed up with food.” Plus he actually liked her and was glad that they were friends. “I should probably get back to it though.”
The sandwich and the company were both excellent, but there was a lot of work that needed done.
***
Sharon laughed. “I’ll keep that in mind: When I want to spend time with Poe, just remember to bring food.” She actually stuck her tongue out at him. Playfully.
“Yeah, I should let you get back to work. But I’m glad we had a chance to have lunch.” She stood and packed away all their trash into the bag, then leaned in for a warm, tight hug. “We need to do this more often.”
