Who: Ted Kord
Where: Chicago, Illinois
When: 5th of May 2010;
What: Blue Beetle to the rescue! After stopping a hold up in a coffee and doughnut shop Ted reaps his reward.
"Here -- on the house!" Ted (or rather the Blue Beetle) had no choice but to take the box that was being offered to him. Well he had a choice of course, he could have said no. Or said; "Thank you, but no thanks necessary. Saving the day is my job." Or something equally heroic like.
Instead Ted took the offered box of doughnuts -- because they were doughnuts, and a quick peak in to the box had shown him a variety of doughnuts. Some of those doughnuts had powdered sugar on them. If Ted had one weakness -- well okay he had a lot of weaknesses, and he knew that -- but doughnuts were decidedly one of those weaknesses. So Ted had accepted the box, feeling like it was the right thing to do.
It was just luck that he had been here at the coffee shop, he had had one of those right place and right time moments. See, The Bug was outfitted with (almost) everything that a person would need to fight crime, it was like a mobile base of operations for Ted. But it didn't have a bathroom. And after guzzling several bottles of water during the day, and having a few energy drinks, well Ted was thinking that on his next upgrade to The Bug, he'd see what he could do about putting in a bathroom in.
Until than however Ted was going to make do. Making do in this case was finding an out of the way place to park his flying beetle shaped craft, and doing a quick change into Ted Kord. Because while Ted liked to think that the city of Chicago loved the Blue Beetle, he didn't think they loved him enough to allow him to give him the key to the bathroom in a coffee shop, without making a purchase.
But when he had been piloting The Bug he had flown over a coffee shop -- and seen some masked people running out into the parking lot. And so the Blue Beetle had sprung into action. He had descended down from The Bug, kicked some would be robber butt, and was now being rewarded with doughnuts. The lesson as far as Ted was concerned was crime didn't pay. But being a hero did -- and it paid in doughnuts.
