WHO: Nolan McCarthy and Alexa Weber.
WHAT: Just like they planned, the two sneak into an apartment building to take advantage of the swimming pool. This do not go according to plan.
WHERE: Some random apartment building in... District 3?
WHEN: Tuesday, August 10th after sundown.
Getting into the apartment swimming pool was actually easier than Nolan had anticipated and in some ways, he was actually a bit let down that there wasn’t some epic spy movie-esque moments during their little break in to the building. Instead, things just pretty much went according to what little plans they had for the event. No yelling. No running. There wasn’t even any question about whether or not they were supposed to be there, something which Nolan was definitely expecting. No, everything just went smoothly and they reached the empty pool area with no problems, which was perhaps for the better since while he had done this, he really didn’t feel like having his father find out about it as that would certainly ruin any fun. “You know. It’s kind of weird how easy that was,” he said to Alexa as he dropped his backpack on a pristine white lawn chair near the deep end of the pool. Kicking off his footwear, Nolan then began to pull his shirt over his head where it got stuck around his ears for a brief moment before it was thrown on the chair next to his bag. There was a part of Alexa that got more than a little bit of a thrill out of clandestine and slightly illegal activities. When she’d been on the street part of it had been survival, but she’s gotten really good at sneaking into places and stealing things, and this gave her that same sort of feeling, particularly since Nolan was with her It made it seem more fun and a bit more safe too for some reason. When they reached the pool she was somewhat surprised no one was using it and could only think it was lucky for them but not so much for the people who had no idea what they were missing. “I know,” she said. “It is.” She toed off her tennis shoes and pulled off her own shirt, revealing her bikini top underneath. Her shorts quickly followed, and she smiled over at him, bouncing a bit on the balls of her feet as she joined him by the side of the pool. “I would say almost too easy but you know we still have the part where the psycho killer comes out of the changing room and attacks us poor innocent kids.” She wiggled her fingers menacingly and nudged him with her elbow. Oh, Nolan got a little thrill out of it too, but he sadly always had thoughts of his father whenever it was time to do things like this. Perhaps that was why he never managed to get into lots of trouble when he was younger and ever to this day. Some children worked well with threats while others worked well with the thought of privileges being revoked. Nolan, on the other hand, apparently worked well with the possible disappointment and guilt his father could lay on him. So far, so good. As she removed her shirt to reveal the bikini top, Nolan thought he was doing a good job of not obviously looking at her, but he did stare for at least a few seconds before it dawned on him and he turned his attention to something over in the corner. So as she bounced over to him, he darted his eyes down the the still water of the pool and consciously tried to not obviously stare at her chest for a second time. “Man, we still have to worry about that as a sexy teen and twentysomething.” It was an every present threat! Then without saying another word, he snaked his arm around her waist and pulled her body right against his before pushing the two of them off the ground and into the pool. There wasn’t even time to shriek, and honestly, Alexa really didn’t mind that much, although she was grinning from what he’d said before he’d pulled her in as she surfaced, gasping for breath and half hanging onto him. “Cheater!” she sputtered, slapping at him with one hand and splashing him before wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him back under as she half climbed on top of him. There was more than one way to try and drown your sort of almost boyfriend. Even though the pool was heated, hitting the water still came as a sudden cold shock to Nolan’s body. It caused his body to tense up for a moment, but given the heat the city had been suffering from the past few weeks, it was a welcome change. Yes, this was a fabulous idea. Of course he received another shock as when he surfaces, he was immediately dunked back under from a very grabby Alexa. Flailing, he managed to free himself after a few seconds and swam the distance underwater to reach the wall. He then popped up from underneath the water, taking a moment to splash Alexa before speaking. “Cheater? Then what do you call that little move?” Her lips turned up at the corners as she slicked her wet hair out of her eyes with her hands. “Revenge.” She treaded water further into the pool as he clung to the edge and then flipped up onto her back, half floating, and looking up at the sky above. It was sort of neat to be on a rooftop and in a pool. Even if you really couldn’t see the stars here. “This feels so good,” she said. “I can’t believe how hot it’s been.” As she moved, Nolan watched her movements as his head tilted to the side, obviously not caring about his previous efforts to not do so only minutes before then. He then stretched his arms around either side of the pool edge to steady himself so he wouldn’t have to tread water as his feet obviously could not touch the bottom. Right now, this pool felt beyond good. It felt great. Amazing. Fanfuckingtastic. “I can’t remember the last time it was this hot. Probably before the bomb.” For a brief moment, he wondered if the bomb could be responsible for this shitty weather. “It got hot in Mississippi,” she said. “But we’d go to the swimming hole. Something like that. God knows there’s no AC anywhere there.” She turned again in the water and swam over to him, so she was facing him, staying afloat with smooth movements of her arms as her legs moved lazily beneath the water. He looked really good without his shirt on, and it made her want to touch him, made her want to do more than touch him actually but so far she wasn’t sure how he felt about that. “You going to swim? Or just sit and watch me?” Her eyes met his and she grinned, liking that it was just the two of them here just now. At her comment, he grinned back before taking a moment to bite his bottom lip. Nolan than turned his head away from her and looked over at the door through which they had entered the pool area, half expecting someone to come in and ruin the potential moment. That would be his crap luck here. “Actually, I was enjoying watching you.” “Yeah?” Her smile widened just a little, and she tried to hold back a little nervous laugh that unexpectedly threatened to come out. There were a lot of times in her head over the past couple months she’d thought about Nolan but thoughts were a lot different from reality. Reality made her stomach feel a lot more fluttery. “You were, were you?” She swam a stroke or two, just enough to close the distance between them, so she was closer to him, her hands coming up to rest gently on his shoulders, partly to keep her afloat and partly for an excuse to touch him. She was always looking for excuses to do that for some reason. Once her hands rested on his shoulders, Nolan lifted one of his hands up and held it in front of his face so he could make the common gesture to indicate a small amount. “Well,” he started with an obvious joking in his tone of voice. “Maybe just a tiny little bit.” “Just a little bit.” She did laugh then and tried not to think about how close they were in the water. She could feel her cheeks starting to heat up a little and had to look down because she was afraid he would make her blush just then. “Yeah because I never find myself watching you. Ever. Obviously.” “Well that's a complete lie.” Mainly because Nolan had often caught her looking at him while he was trying to look at her. He didn't say anything after that and instead just gave her a small smile for a moment or two. Then suddenly he started leaning in to Alexa, his head tilting to the side to indicated he was obviously and finally going in for a kiss. And then he saw the guard through the large plate glass windows on the other side of the pool. “Oh shit.” Alexa’s eyes stayed on his, puzzled, wondering why he had stopped when it felt like her heart was going to leap through her throat, and then suddenly as she turned her head to see what she was looking at her heart practically did. The guard watched them and then banged on the window before taking off around the side of the building. “Out of the pool.” She practically pushed him up towards the edge, her own instincts from the time on the streets kicking in as she pulled herself up too. They had a minute maybe, before the guard could circle around and get in where they were to get out of here. “Come on we have to go.” She was up and out of the pool in one push of her surprisingly strong arms, and, dripping water she pulled her shirt right on over her wet suit and wiggled her way into her shorts before shoving her feet into her shoes. His heart felt like it was going to leap through his throat, though it was for something completing unrelated to his attempt to finally kiss Alexa. While she seemed to know exactly how to handle the situation, Nolan froze for a few seconds as thoughts of getting caught and his father knowing flashed through his head. Oh shit was right. Thankfully, he came to his senses sooner enough and was hoisting himself out of the pool right after Alexa. He then grabbed his shirt, throwing it on over his head and immediately after shoved his towel into his bag while simultaneously shoving his feet back into his footwear. All the while, his heart was racing and their minute was quickly counting down to nothing. “Which way do we go out?” Alexa obviously was the smarter of the two in this area. “This way.” There was a fire door at the edge of the pool area, and going out it would set off the alarm but it would be better than going through the front and getting caught. She had only her towel in her bag and she grabbed it with one hand, the other reaching for his and half pulling him after her. She hit the bar on the fire door hard with her hip, sending it open and the two of them spilling out into the grounds of the building even as the fire alarm blared around them. “Away from the street. Back towards that parking garage. Come on!” She started running, not letting go of his hand and counting on him to keep up. Right now, he was praying that there wasn’t a very good security system in the apartment complex that could identify them. Or that there were any finger prints left at the scene. Nolan’s mind started racing through all the possible things that could happen beyond the security guard to get them caught, so he really wasn't paying attention to what was going on beyond being dragged by Alexa at a speed that was easy for him to maintain. “Good thing we don’t smoke, huh?” he asked as he tried to interject some humor into their getaway. A half laugh exploded out of her. “Yeah.” They ran down the alley and into the parking garage, then she cut through, leading him down to a lower level following signs for an exit and out onto a completely opposite street. It didn’t seem like anyone was following them, but there was always a possibility. She didn’t want to lead anyone that might be seeing them to her house, and so instead she led him down into another residential neighbourhood where, after a few minutes she felt safe collapsing onto a bench in a little play park and trying to catch her breath. “Oh Fuck.” The word came out before she thought about it, and she looked over at him before laughing again. He was still soaking wet and no doubt she was too, his hair all over his head, clothes half sticking to him. Once they were settled on the bench, he leaned over so his elbows could rest on his knees while he attempted to catch his breath, somewhat unsure of what had just happened. There had been running and fear and sore muscles, which had all boiled down to sitting on this park bench. Nolan would be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy the rush, but that was something that could be saved for another time. Or something they could try again. Laughing a bit, he finally sat up and looked at Alexa, smiling as he did so. She looked just as wet and harried as he did. Then without any word about just what happened, he placed a hand against her cheek and finally leaned back in for the kiss that was so rudely interrupted by the security guard. Alexa had honestly been waiting for that kiss a lot longer than since a few minutes ago back at the cool. Truth be told, she’d probably wanted him to kiss her since the time they’d spent all night talking at some diner, drinking coffee and finally stumbling out at four in the morning. Her hand came up to cover his, and she kissed him back, unable to hold back a little smile that made her laugh a little against his mouth before she moved her hand up into his hair and pulled him closer just in case he had any crazy ideas about pulling away too soon. |
