Who: Alex Weber and Nolan McCarthy
Where: Alex's Dad's Apartment
When: Backdated to last week, Thursday Evening, July 8 2029
What: The two are watching Star Wars when a slightly illegal plan is hatched.
Alexa was kind of glad her Dad was at work for the evening. Not that she didn't think he'd mind if Nolan came over and watched movies with her, but it would be a little odd of he was around, because they couldn't go anywhere but the living room and that meant her Dad would either be watching with them or stuck in his bedroom if he didn't go out somewhere, and that didn't seem fair to him either. This way worked all around. Particularly as shifts for her Dad meant all night, because watching the entire original Star Wars Trilogy would take time to say the least. They'd made it through A New Hope and where about halfway through The Empire Strikes Back. Pizza had been consumed and they were both leaning back on the couch, watching the television in the warm apartment while the window fan blew nearly cool air over them. It was warm, and it made her miss the window AC unit a little at her old house in Missisippi. Although there wasn't anything else she missed about it. She was wearing a tank top and shorts, hair pulled back up in a messy bun as she tried to keep cool, and from time to time she'd look over at Nolan in the flickering light from the television, painfully aware they were sitting next to each other, half hoping he'd make a move and half nervous he would. As the scene faded to Luke whining yet again in the swamp with Yoda, she reached for her root beer and took a drink, holding the can against her forehead to feel the chill of it. "I wish we could go swimming again," she said. "It's beastly." Truth be told, Nolan had been a little bit nervous about the thought of Alexa's father being around for their little movie marathon, so he was excited that the older man wasn't home. Not that he was going to try anything like that, but meeting father's tended to make him nervous. Not that he had any reason to be nervous about that. Right? For now, he wasn't going to think about that and decided just to pay attention to the movies at hand. Yes. "Me too," he answered, though at first he didn't look at Alexa. Instead, Nolan looked down at the floor for a moment before slouching down in his seat a bit more. He then rolled his head along the back of the couch and finally looked at her, a small smile coming over his face for the few moments before he spoke again. "They used to have a ton more public pools back before everything happened. I guess most of them are paved over for new apartment buildings now." Alex lowered the can and looked back at him, a little smile curving up the corners of her own mouth as she rested her head on the back of the couch. "I bet. There's some though. I used to take a shower at this one down in District O sometimes. It was cheaper than anywhere else and I got to swim too out of it." He was sitting awfully close, a fact she liked, despite the heat. "I bet someone's got one around here somewhere. Back in Mississippi people'd go swimming at the lake at night. Nice doing that, under the stars." Her smile widened a bit mischeviously. "Too bad there's no where around here we could do it. We could go camping though. God I miss camping." As she sat there, she thought about her conversation with Naomi, certainly this wasn't all one sided. It had to be mutual, right? He smiled at her little story about the free shower and swim, but inwardly it made Nolan feel a bit sad. While he hadn't talked to Alexa much about her life between the bomb and moving in with her father, he had plenty of imagination and news reports to tell him that life on the streets was shit. This was probably why he was so happy that she had found her father and perhaps it made him rest a bit easier that she was somewhere safe now, some place that didn't require a day pass to a pool to get a shower. "It seems you pretty much have to live in one of those fancy apartments with the indoor pools," he answered as the gears in his head started turning. Hmm. How easy would it be to sneak into one of those? His thoughts were interrupted at the comment about camping and it caused him to laugh for a second. "Camping? Where in the city would we go camping?" Pause. "Though you haven't gone camping until you've gone with my family." The thought of apartment with pools intrigued her and as he talked her thoughts started racing, enough that she leaned over for her I-holo and began to check for something. "I don't know about camping here," she said. "In the country I guess. My Dad and I used to go all the time when I was a kid. Although it probably wasn't nearly as exciting as your family's trips I'm sure." After a moment of looking she found what she wanted and handed him the device. "Check this out. There's a new apartment building about five blocks form here. Says it has a pool." "Exciting is putting it nicely. And I don't think there is much country left," he replied, though that was more to himself. While he hadn't been out of the city in years, Nolan assumed there was a certain amount of urban sprawl that had taken place to accommodate the relocation of millions of Americans and foreign residents. They had to live somewhere, right? For all he knew, they would have to go far north into Maine to find a camping ground. Leaning in close to her, he took took the device, but didn't move back to his original spot. "That's a pretty nice looking pool." There was only a moments pause before Nolan spoke again as a small smile started to cross his face. "We should go swimming in it." Alexa liked when he was close to her. Too much maybe, because she could smell how good he smelled and heat or not it just felt nice. She let her chin rest on his shoulder so she could look over it at the screen. "I like this idea," she said with a little smile of her own. "This idea has merit to it." She shifted just a little closer, her hand resting on his back. "Do you have a suit? I could see if Dad has extra shorts. Because I think this might be better than Star Wars. At least tonight." "I have my own suit. I think," he started as his voice tailed off as the sentence reached its end. Hmm. While sneaking into a pool seemed like a really great way to beat the heat, Nolan had some hesitations due to the fact his father was an NYC cop. Sneaking into a building could potentially get him in a lot of trouble with his father, especially if it went completely unplanned. Umm. "Why do we finish watching Star Wars and we can check this place out later. Like, see if it's actually doable to sneak into it." Thus lowering the risk of getting caught. Apparently Nolan only lived slightly on the edge. Alexa pouted at that but only slightly. "All right," she said. "But you're going to have to think of some way to take my mind off the heat." That came out a bit more flirtatious than she intended, but she wasn't too worried about it. "We'll have to develop a plan of attack." She leaned back again on the sofa but this time stayed closer to him, her hand sliding around to rest lightly at his waist. "I do think Star Wars might give us some inspiration for that." You'll have to forgive him, Alexa. If you're going to do something illegal, might as well do it right so you don't get caught. For a good ten seconds, Nolan sat there without moving, obviously not caring about where she had placed her hand. Then he leaned forward, grabbed the remote, and shut off the television before looking back at her. "How about we discus out plan of attack over some ice cream?" Alexa gave him an amused look that he'd changed his mind. "All right. Ice cream it is." |
