She might have been willing to let it go, but as soon as this woman was telling her to be careful, Caroline's back was up. And there was something familiar about her... something she couldn't quite put her finger on...
"Oh good grief," she said, realization striking her. "You're that snotty know it all bitch from the journals, aren't you?"
And as soon as she said it she knew it to be true. She didn't know how she hadn't picked it straight away - just looking at this woman told her all that she needed to know. The way she dressed screamed "I'm a snobby bitch". The way she carried herself spoke of years of people cowing at her feet. Well, Caroline wasn't buying into it, not for a second.
"Where the hell do you get off telling me to be careful?" she spat. "I'm walking here, so screw you lady!"
The conversation they had had still rankled in Caroline's head. She resented being told that she had to give things up, things she'd worked hard for, "for the greater good". If she never heard that phrase again she'd be a happy woman. But this woman in front of her, whose name escaped her at the moment, this woman seemed to think that preaching to perfect strangers about the so-called greater good was okay and a good idea. Caroline made up her mind to hate her.
