September 28, 2020 - Avoidance?
Who: Ben, open
Where: Great Hall
When: Shortly after dinner
Rating: PG?
Status: Open/Ongoing
Summary: Hexed

Ben had determined that the best place to get some ruddy peace and quiet following dinner was to hang about in the Great Hall once everyone else had departed.  Sure, there was the library for quiet, but that meant actually attempting to look like you were reading something and not doodling in your notebook.  And yes, there was the Slytherin commons as well, a place he very much planned on retreating to once he'd grown bored of his current location, but he spent a great deal of time there as it was and wasn't altogether interested in the antics of his housemates just then.

To the untrained eye, it might have appeared that young Higgins was studiously at work, poring over his studies.  However, if one looked closely at the actual book he appeared to be writing furiously in, it was filled with his particular brand of art; sketches and full coloured illustrations and the like.  Just now he was working on a particularly fetching piece involving a Slytherin Quidditch player standing victoriously over a Gryffindor one, a foot up on his chest and a malicious grin on the line drawing's face.  He smirked as he began to add odd details here and there.

It was possible that Eline Dovers was going mad. She had lost her camera, and those who were smart would best keep away from her when she did. Even if somebody tried to help, if you don’t hand her the camera within twenty seconds she’ll flip out on you. So after searching her whole dorm and the Hufflepuff common room (both of which she left a mess that she expected others to look after) she had found herself in the Great Hall.

She dashed to the Hufflepuff table and began scanning it for any signs of her sacred camera. Her eyes zeroed in on it, just laying lazily on the table.

Well, she thought bitterly, couldn’t the house elves come take it to me? Not send me in a bloody panic. Everyone knows what my camera looks like.

Eline, much calmer now, walked over and claimed her camera, only to drop it, setting off the flash and letting out a very loud noise.

He jumped a bit, quill making a splotch where the Quaffle was meant to be, and looked up with a scowl to find the source of this particular muck up. It was bad enough with students dropping things, but it echoed in the Great Hall, amplifying the sound as if she'd slammed the camera on the table in front of him.

"Oi," he called over, "Trying to wake the dead over there?"

It took Eline a moment to recover from the flash. So that’s how people felt after she randomly snapped a photo of them. She made a mental note to warn people before she took a picture now. She glanced over at the seventh year, only noticing his presence as he spoke.

“Sorry,” Eline apologized. She brushed her bangs out of her eyes and ran her fingers though her hair, catching a few knots in the process. “Didn’t know you were there.” She smiled apologetically.

He looked about, over both shoulders, and then back to her, eyebrows raised.

"Yes," he agreed, expression droll, "I expect that I was incredibly inconspicuous in this crowd." He smirked though, shrugging. "I'm sure I'll live. Though I'm not entirely convinced this will."

He glanced drown to his drawing and frowned. Sure he could have used a spell to correct it, but ... well, the damage was done. On to the next. Long fingers fiddled with the edge of the page as he considered flipping it for a fresh canvas, as it were.

“Not sure what will… oh.” Eline had strode across the Great Hall to look over Ben’s shoulder. She kind of felt guilty that she messed him up but she barely cared, after a moment. It was only a mindless doodle. A well drawn mindless doodle, in her opinion, but a mindless doodle nevertheless.

“Well, sorry about that.” Eline muttered.

Eline glanced to her camera, quickly examining the front. Hm. No damage. Good. She couldn’t say so much for the back… There was a --mercy me--scratch! Eline had to bite her lip so she wouldn’t throw it back on the floor. Gah. She wasn’t even a klutz! How could she have dropped it.

He snorted; she wasn't sorry, and that wasn't even a convincing lie. Glaring at the tarnished page, he flipped it before glancing up to her, wondering if he cared if that contraption was still all right.

"You tote that thing about with you everywhere?" he asked, eyeing it suspiciously.

Looked like a load of rubbish to him, really.

“Yes, you don’t have anything against that, do you?” Eline narrowed her eyes suspiciously. It could be possible that he had had a bad experience with cameras but as usual, Eline was careless. She shoved the camera into her messenger bag and pushed a piece of hair behind her ear.

“I’ve been doing photography since my first year.” Even if the stuff from her first year was a load of rubbish, she had started then. Now she was considerably better though…

"Against that ... thing?" he ventured, "I guess not. When it's not buggering me up, that is."

He watched as the camera disappeared into her bag before raising his eyes to her face again. Satisfied that it was now safely stowed where it would not be flashing or making loud noises, he began to doodle again, this time drawing her dropping it and smirking amusedly to himself.

Eline stood there awkwardly for a moment, not exactly sure what to say. “Well… good,” she mutter childishly, omitting the ’or else’ that she was going to add. She already sounded like she was seven, she didn’t want to sound like she was five, the girl was capable of containing some sense of maturity.

Eline was about to leave when her eyes caught onto what he had drawn. “Oh, real mature and my hair isn’t that curly, y‘know.”

"It's a caricature," he pointed out, "It's meant to be exaggerated. And really, you should feel honoured; it's very rare that I draw someone specifically."

Usually it was just random musings, whatever caught his eye at the time. It just so happened that her dropping her camera had been eyecatching. He couldn't help her klutziness, now could he? Looking up to her, he grinned a bit before he drew in the lines of the flash.

“Oh, I apologize I’m so honored. Please allow me to kiss your feet your majesty.” Eline mock bowed, dropping her bag in the process of the attempt. “What the hell!?” she exclaimed, her face turning a little red. She was getting pissed off at herself for being so clumsy. So what if she was about to throw a fit in front of someone she barely knew?

“Why am I such a ditz today?” she whined, more to herself then anyone else. She ran her fingers through her curls a few times to calm herself then picked up her bag.

"Are you sure it's just today?" he asked, purposely being a prat simply because he could, "And you should kiss my feet; I've got very nice ones. While you're down there, you might as well shine my shoes as well."

He wasn't looking at her, concentrating on filling in the details of his drawing instead. Ben was well aware he was being rude and, to tell the truth, didn't particularly care what some ruddy fourth year 'puff thought of him.

Eline decided to ignore his comments and picked up her bag, disliking the crunch she had heard when her camera fell. She was getting increasingly annoyed, at first the sarcasm didn't bother her--she was constantly sarcastic to just about everyone--but now it did. Maybe the counting technique would work. One... two...

"Okay you're a prat." Apparently it didn't.

Hazel eyes looked up to her, mirth dancing in them.

"Yes," he agreed, "And?"

He laughed, rather amused that she seemed to think he cared what she thought. One hand clutched his chest as he gazed to her.

"Oh, I'm sorry ... I've insulted you, haven't I?" he ventured, schooling his expression into something more rueful, "How can I ever live with myself."

He wondered how long she'd actually endure him and smirked at the thought.

Eline instantly cooled. She knew this game, she had played it millions of times in his position and was determined not to lose. She hated defeat.

She looked at him through narrow eyes, her voice back to its normal tone, just more condescending now. Eline met his gaze with a bored look.

"Yup, feel good about it?" Eline asked, crossing her arms across her chest.

"Bloody right I do," he agreed, expression passive though his eyes had a malicious glint to them, "I relish the idea of crushing some insolent 'puff under my bootheel."

That was a bit of his true colours showing, that was. Usually Ben kept his thoughts on such matters to himself, but if she wanted to challenge him on it, he had no issues letting his flag fly a little.

"Oh, right. I'm completely crushed. Your opinion matters so much to me. I forgot all about that." Eline pushed a wayward curl behind her ear. Eline smiled, oddly enough. She enjoyed a good argument every once in a while. As long as they weren't about to go all Avada Kerdavra on each other they were good.

"You should look to your memory then," he snarked, "My opinion matters a great deal to you. Shame you've forgotten about it, though; I'd thought I had you well trained. I'll just have to retrain you, won't I?"

His tone was neutral, but Ben was about ready to whip out his wand and begin hexing. She'd begun as a mild annoyance and now was getting under his skin, though he refused to show it. His composure was as cold and calculating as always.

"Trained? When did this happen? I'm tamed by no one." Eline had to stop herself from laughing at what they had both said. Trained? Not tamed by anyone? Hah.

Eline seemed to glow knowing that she was getting to him, and she wasn't even trying. Hah again. Things seemed to be in her favor at the moment. She unfolded her arms then folded them behind her chest, wondering where her wand was. Better be safe then sorry.

"That's not what I've heard," he said before standing from the table, tucking his notebook under his arm, hands pressing into his pockets.

He grinned cheekily, knowing full well what he'd just insinuated and not particularly caring that he'd insinuated it.

What could he have possibly heard about her? Were people talking about Eline, saying that she was easy? Hey she could shut their mouths easily, she was good at Charms.

"Well what have you heard?" Eline asked in mock calamity that was convincing enough. She knit her eyebrows together, anticipating his reply.

Bingo. Ben's lips curved into a deep smile.

"Oh, nothing," he said, circling round the back of her, both hands tucked behind his back, "Just enough to make a bloke think."

He had no intentions of actually thinking on it, of course, but if she thought he did or that others were. Well. His work here was done.

Eline's expression faltered for a moment, then went back to its neutral position. Which meant she was looking rather smug, but it wasn't as convincing now.

"Right, sure." Eline pushed her bangs out of her eyes. She couldn't determine if he was lying or not...

He circled round to face her again before reaching up a hand to brush a stray hair away, keeping up his act with precision.

"I guess I'll be able to know for myself, though," he ventured, tone wistful, "If I mmet you in a dark hallway some day."

He smiled darkly to her and on the inside he was laughing his arse off, wondering if she was buying it. He wasn't going to be doing anything with her in a dark anywhere, thank you so much. But he could tell he was getting to her and for that reason he would keep up the pretense.

Eline stepped away from him, her face flushed and her eyebrows raised.

"Well in jolly ol' England people like that are called pedophiles." She was trying to figure out some way she could get back on top... well maybe that was the wrong way to word things. Eline knew though, that she had to figure out whoever was spreading this rumor--if it was a rumor--and get the upper hand on the situation.

Seeing as where she was now, she doubted that she'd ever get there.

He laughed a little and rocked back on his heels. Clearly she hadn't noticed some of the goings on in the school. Or maybe you had to be a certain kind of observant to notice it. He made a kind of noncommittal noise.

"Sure," he agreed before walking past her, feeling he'd fully accomplished what havoc he could here, "I'll see you around, Eline."

He reached out to give her hair a light tug before heading out of the hall, chuckling to himself, well pleased.

Eline stood there for a moment, feeling highly disturbed. After she snapped back into reality she quickly exited the Great Hall and headed for the Hufflepuff common room. Shower time.

He had to have been lying.
