Slacker
Who: Danny Harris
Where: Lake
When: September 16, lunchtime
Status: Open, ongoing

Summary: No.

He supposed he should be studying.  No, actually, Danny knew he should be studying for the precise reason that he had something resembling a quiz next period.  Funny how he couldn't be bothered and was instead spending his lunch hour sitting by the lake with his guitar plucking out a tune at random and gazing out over the water, something that could very easily not be described as studying.  His books were in reach, if you wanted to look at it from that perspective; they were haphazardly piled beside him though he didn't spare them a single glance, preferring instead to pour himself into his idle musical pursuits and let his thoughts wander.

Hazel eyes were turned down to his guitar, though he didn't really need to watch his fingers.  But something in paying attention to what he was doing made him a little less conscious of what eyes might or might not be watching him.

Sabryna was wandering around outside - she'd gotten into a particularly rousing conversation in the library and been asked to take it elsewhere because she was disturbing people - and had decided to wander the grounds to let off some energy. Or something. She wasn't really certain what she was doing but the shadows were making really interesting shapes on the ground and she was kind of half following them around, kind of in a half dance to music that she was hearing in her head. Or at least, she thought she was hearing in her head.

"Oops," she squeaked when she stumbled too close to where Danny was spread out, and very nearly tripped over him. She managed to dodge to the right with a strange sort of twisting movement at the last second and avoided stepping on anything or hurting herself. Midway through this manoeuvrer, her eyes lit up as they focused better on Danny, and she grinned. "Oh hey! I thought I was imagining the music! Very pretty!" she said as she settled, swaying only slightly as she regarded the older boy.

Danny stilled the music momentarily, and he almost reached out a hand to catch her except that she seemed to have caught herself, and he grinned a bit instead as he started up again, hazel eyes trained on Sabryna.

"Thanks," he said, chuckling lightly before he shook his head a bit, trying to get the hair out of his eyes. "So do you make a habit of tripping over people in plain sight or am I just lucky?"

She clapped her hands to her mouth to stop the grin and babble that was sure to come from his choice of words. He was just lucky that she had nearly tripped over him? How sweet! She was delighted! Most people would've said they were unlucky because of that because that was clearly obvious that they were unlucky because she could have injured them in her klutziness or something but he was lucky and she was pleased.

"Sorry," she said, but she was still grinning. "I... uh... I get distracted? I was watching the shadows..." she was starting to look over her shoulder as she said it, and her voice got a tad quieter toward the end - it was possible he missed the last bit of her sentence as she looked for some to point out. Her grin faded away for a moment as she looked around, and then she looked back and the grin was back in place. "Sometimes I don't watch where I'm going?" she offered.

Since he hadn't sent her away, she plopped down on the ground next to him. "Have you been playing long? When did you start? What sort of songs do you know?" she asked brightly. Then she paused to wait for answers.

Danny watched her curiously as she went about her business and he waited for her to come to a full stop before attempting to field any of the questions. He chuckled a little before answering.

"I've been playing a while, yeah," he agreed, "Started when I was about ten; old enough to understand what I was doing and still young enough to learn it without difficulty." What else had she asked? Oh, right. "I know plenty of different kinds of songs," he ventured.

Then he grinned a bit when he realized they hadn't even been introduced.

"I'm Danny, by the way," he murmured as he worked out a particularly tricky chord.

She giggled a bit, extending her hand and quickly withdrawing it once or twice as she tried to decide it was worth it to try and shake his hand if he was playing because she didn't really want to distract him because she did think that he was playing quite nicely but at the same time it was polite to shake hands wasn't it and -

"Oh!" she said, cutting herself off as she realized she hadn't said her name yet. "Sabryna," she grinned. "Sabryna Wyld. I, um," she bit at her thumbnail to keep from extending her hand again. It had the added bonus of keeping her from talking while she worked out her thoughts and figured out what exactly she wanted to know about the guitar.

"What sort of songs?" she pressed. "Muggle songs or wizarding songs? Were you born a muggle? Who taught you to play? And..." she stopped, grinning a bit at herself, and bit her thumb again. "I should let you answer," she said, waving her hand a bit to indicate that he should start talking before she kept going.

Danny wondered if she was always this high energy, and his eyebrows raised slightly. He sucked his lip ring into his mouth until she'd finished, fiddling with the ring with his tongue before letting the jewelry slip back out of his mouth.

"Muggle songs, mostly," he replied, "Though I've picked up some wizarding songs along the way; I can play some of the old Weird Sisters stuff pretty well. Yes, I was born a muggle; both parents, and my dad taught me a bit but I'm mostly self-taught."

He thought that covered everything, though he ran back over it to be sure.

"You sure ask a lot of questions, Sabryna," he said, stating the obvious.

She continued to bite on her thumb, looking at him somewhat apologetically.

"Sorry?" she offered timidly. "My mom says I'm overly curious and that I should at least let people reply to the first question before I start in on the next one, and I usually try I really do and I am interested in the answers it's just that there's so many questions..."

She bit on her thumb again, sort of half giggling, in an awkward sort of way. She pressed both her hands together at her lips.

"I'll try to stop," she said, not the least bit offended. "You should talk! Tell me about yourself! Tell me about your life!" she grinned. "I'm a Muggleborn too," she shared.

Danny shook his head and went back to looking at his guitar, plucking out the notes softly as he gazed down to the movement of his hand.

"Tell you about my life?" he asked, grinning slightly, "Well I'd bet it's pretty close to yours if you're Muggleborn as well. Mum and Dad were entirely surprised the first time an owl came to the house, but they've been real understanding about the whole thing even if the neighbours did talk about the owl for weeks after."

He looked over to her, hazel eyes peeking out from between dark hair that had managed to flop over his face again.

"What kind of things did you want to know?" he asked, "I mean, I can talk from here til sunset about Mum and Dad, but I don't even know what you'd be interested in."

Then he thought he might have just invited a new barrage of questions and he braced himself.

She continued to bite down on her thumb thoughtfully, grinning at Danny, and nodded her head. When he asked her what specifically she

"My Aunt's a witch!" Sabryna shared happily when he was finished talking. "It came as a surprise to my parents of course, but Mum handled it way better than Dad did, since she had..." Bryn stopped herself, sort of half rolling her eyes and grinning sheepishly.

"Tell me about things that interest you," she decided, forcing herself to calm down a bit. "I like hearing about people. I think it's interesting."

"Oh, uh, well I'm really interested in music," he ventured, "Outside of that, I dunno. I'm not really into reading or academics. More like quidditch and dirt bike racing and the lot. My Dad took me dirt biking a couple summers ago and I think it's brilliant so now I go every chance I get when I'm back home."

Not that it was all that big a thing, but he had enjoyed it.

"I'm into piercings and the like?" he offered weakly as an afterthought, though that would have been decently obvious and he shook his head. "So what about you? What interests you, then? Besides people."

She listened intently, and she would probably remember most of that for later. It was all in her mind somewhere, it was only a matter of finding the right trigger to recall it. She nodded her head eagerly, and grinned when he addressed her.

"Well it's a bit of a long list, as you can imagine, and I probably shouldn't bore you with it because..." she trailed off, closing her eyes and exhaling a single breath of air, trying to focus on one thing.

"I like nature," she decided. "Animals, and trees and plants and outside! There's so much to do and see in the world and the creatures living in it - people included - and so many people miss out on it because they're watching their shoes as they walk, you know?" she chirped. "It's like, take a minute to smell the roses because they smell really nice! Or any kind of flower, really. You can smell daisies sometimes. And you can eat berries and..." she bit her thumb. "You know?"

Danny nodded, chuckling slightly.

"I know," he agreed, "Nature is nice, I guess. I'm more of an inside person, me. Not up for flower smelling, really."

He shrugged; he'd honestly never thought about it. But he wasn't really outdoorsy or anything. No camping or hiking or ... flower smelling. That was all far too tame for his liking.

In a over-exaggerated gesture that was not deliberate, Bryn tossed her arms in a bit of an arc onto the ground next to her. "I know! So few people are outdoorsy types nowadays, and it's just so weird because nature has so much to offer, you know? But I get it-" she assured him quickly. "You know, you've got your guitar and music and stuff and you feel about that like I feel about nature. I mean, I assume, because... that's your interests and..."

Her eyes were studying the guitar curiously.

"Do you give lessons?" she asked, pointing to the instrument. "I never learned to play anything growing up."

Danny was pondering in the back of his mind how someone could have so much energy all the time. Did it ever run out? Did batteries plug in somewhere? A hidden caffeine addiction, maybe? His brows knit together as he regarded her, working through a riff without even thinking about it, fingers moving on autopilot.

"Don't give lessons," he managed after she'd finished, "I don't think I have the patience to teach someone."

Well, he might. But he certainly didn't want to try right now. Maybe if he needed money over the summer or something.

Her eyes watched his hands move over the guitar in fascination, enjoying how the knowledge of how to play seemed innate for him.

She drew back, slightly, a little bit concerned by that comment, wondering if it had been directed at her. If someone else had asked, would it have been the same response? Could he teach someone else but he just wouldn't have the patience to teach her?

She sighed a bit forlornly, and worked through it in her mind, her head bobbing slightly as she went through it. She could understand that. She was a bit of a nutcase at times. And she wasn't sure she'd have the focus to learn anyway. So she smiled again.

"Do you play anything else?" she asked, trying to be a bit calmer now. "Or just the guitar?"

He shook his head with a slight grin.

"Just the guitar," he agreed, "I'm not that talented."

He wondered if that sigh had been directed at him, but he honestly didn't have the attention span to teach someone else. Or the patience. And if she'd taken that the wrong way, well then she had.

"Maybe you are," Bryn suggested, her face lighting up as she leaned toward him eagerly. "Maybe you are that talented and you just don't know it yet. I mean, have you ever tried? Ever sat down with a... with a flute, or a piano and tried to learn to play them the same way you learned to play guitar?"

She blushed briefly. Maybe the reason he hadn't tried was he wasn't really interested. She could understand that.

"No, I guess not," he admitted, "Maybe I could pick something else up, someday. For now I'm content with this though. It's a great deal easier to lug around than a piano, I'd wager."

He grinned a bit at that, picturing himself hauling a baby grand about on his back in much the same manner he did his guitar. She had a point, though; he might be able to pick up another instrument just as easily. He'd have to have a go of it when he got home.

Sabryna clapped her hands over her mouth quickly to keep from laughing at the image that brought to mind

"Do you suppose they have mini pianos that you could carry around instead?" she asked, giggling a bit. "Though I'd supposed you'd need mini-fingers for that as well. Or something. A whole piano might be too heavy anyway." She pondered for a moment. "A keyboard would be lighter. You could carry that around!"

"Sure," he agreed, "I'll just go all Schroeder and have my mini piano at all times." He shook his head. "No, I don't think I'll be hauling any unwieldy instruments about, even a keyboard. Might try them out, but I don't think I'll haul them round, no."

Really, he wasn't even certain he'd try them out but there was no harm in guessing he might. Because he might, really.

He wondered when lunch would be over and his gaze flicked to the other students about. Still some time, then. He glanced to his books and rolled his eyes. No, still not inclined to study. Maybe some other time.

"SCHROEDER!" she burst out, delighted. "I loved Peanuts! Snoopy and Woodstock were my favourites," she grinned. "But I liked Charlie Brown as well," she grinned, in an almost dazed way. "Wow, that stuff is old, even by Muggle standards. How do you... were your parents into it?"

Hers had been. Her dad was a bit of a comic strip sort. The bookshelves at home were filled with various compilations of old comic strips, and some new ones. She'd often read them when she needed something to giggle over after being sent to her room to 'calm down'.

"Found a bit that they'd wrapped around dishes," he admitted, "Old stuff that no one cared about and they used for breakables. Think granddad might have kept them but I'm not sure. Either way, I read a bit and now I'm hooked. I'm surprised you got the reference; no one does."

Well, no one their age, anyways. Occasionally he ran into an older muggle who understood that of which he spoke, but even that was a rarity. He smiled genuinely to her, quite pleased.

"Dad was a bit of a comic strip buff," she explain, a bit giggly. "I've got a bunch of old stuff - Garfield, Dennis the Menace, Archie, For Better or Worse..." she grinned a bit. "My personal favourites are Calvin and Hobbes..." she started to say before she stopped. Maybe he only knew Peanuts.

"Too bad no one ever gets the references," she said, a bit sadly. "They should teach about comics in Muggle Studies!" she said, suddenly enthused. "Than more people would get it!"

"Maybe you should suggest it to Professor Silver," he said lightly, "She might take it to heart and add it to her lesson plan. She's pretty nice, actually."

He did wonder if she'd do that and he'd see comics in his next Muggle Studies class. Sometimes he wondered why he took the class, but he was acing it so he wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

"You think?" Bryn asked, her expression going thoughtful as she went over that in her head. She did think that comics would be a beneficial thing to go over in class - well, from her outlook anyway.

Making a split decision, she hopped to her feet, deciding that before she got distracted, she would go and see Professor Silver and mention the comic idea to her. She reasoned there was still a strong likelihood she'd get distracted anyway, but she figured she'd at least try.

"Maybe I'll do that now," she said, to explain why she had suddenly hopped to her feet. She grinned at Danny. "Wanna come with? Or are you going to stay here and play for a bit longer? Maybe I can go and come back? Unless you're going somewhere else, then maybe I could..."

She reminded herself that she really should let him answer, and fell silent.

He chuckled softly.

"No, I'm going to stay here a little while longer, ride out lunch," he replied, "Tell Professor Silver I said hi, though."

He wondered kind of vaguely if she always worked weekends, but it was a moot point; he wasn't going to go wandering in random areas of the castle on a Saturday all that often. And soon there'd be quidditch and then he'd do it even less. Good all round, really.
