September 15 - Stupid Books
Who: Brenna, Eline
Where: Library
When: After classes
Rating: PG

Status: Closed, completed
Summary: Brenna catches Eline's attention by swiping the book she was checking out. The two girls chat for a bit with minimal snark before Eline attempts to trick Brennan into talking about Lan, who's standing behind her looking at books. When Brenna doesn't catch on, the trick backfires, though eventually Lan's laughter catches Brenna's attention. They joke about it for a bit and after Landon leaves, the girls talk about boys and dating before Eline notices how late it's gotten and they head to the Great Hall for dinner.

Brenna was waving her wand around absently, slouched back in one of the chairs in the library, just glaring at the History of Magic text open on the table in front of her. She still needed another six inches for her essay, despite using her largest handwriting, and she was stuck on what to add in.

Sure, she could tangent, but hers wound up really venturing off the beaten path, leaving her with comments like 'please stick to the topic' when she got the papers back.

Making a face at the book, Brenna looked around the library for someone - anyone - to bother.

Eline always cursed herself for taking Muggle Studies. She thought the class would be easy since she was a Muggleborn, how would she know how a stove worked though? Honestly, who cared? So she entered the library with a mission: to find out how stoves worked.

She scanned the section designated for Muggle objects and smiled triumphantly when she found a book titled ‘Muggle Kitchen Appliances’. She quickly took it out and began toward the librarian to check it out. She had absolutely no idea why she was looking forward to learning about things she already knew.

Right. Someone from her house and year. Someone not on the team, who wasn't going to give her any guff for being annoying.

Excellent.

Slipping her wand out, Brenna pointed it toward Eli's book. "Accio, that book," she whispered as she flicked her wand, hoping to pull the book zooming over.

Why yes, Brenna was a pest when she was bored. She'd also cottoned on, last year, that saying 'accio book' in a library was a very, very bad idea. So she'd figured out how to be a little more specific about it.

As soon as the book flew out of Eline’s hands she twisted around to face the person responsible for the action. She probably looked very dumb as she turned in circles a few times until her eyes caught on to the only other person in the library. Maybe glasses weren’t a bad idea…?

“Why did you do that?” Eline asked, trying to keep a steady voice. Very few things didn’t set her off. Unfortunately, this was one of the things that did.

"Do what?" Brenna asked, completely innocent even as she opened up the summoned book. Why on Earth a Muggleborn would be taking Muggle studies was beyond her.

She flipped through the pages, wondering what in here Eline was after, though she did glance up now and again. "Why're you even taking this class?"

Eline rolled her eyes at Brenna and ran her fingers through her hair at an attempt to calm herself, it usually worked and this time was no disappointment. She stared at Brenna for a moment the sighed.

“I thought it’d be an easy E,” she admitted solemnly. “But honestly, why would anyone ever need to know how a stove works? Most Muggles don’t even know that! Or at least my grandmother doesn't, but then again she still calls the freezer the ice box...” Eline ranted loudly. She didn’t care if she was in the library where she was suppose to keep quiet.

"How d'you know what most Muggles know? You've met a lot of them?" Brenna slid the book across the table toward Eline. "Might want to drop your voice. No sense in giving the new librarian something to hemorrhage over."

She grinned. "I dropped it after my third year when I figured out what it was. I'd rather traipse around a forest looking for bowtruckles than try to explain how cable works."

“Well I’d like to think so. I went to school with them for five years,” Eline said calmly. She picked up the book and held it boredly. “The librarian can manage though, she’s been doing it for whoever knows how many years.”

She changed the subject. “I guess Muggle Studies is a bit interesting though. I get to learn things that I probably wouldn't learn in my old school.” Eline shrugged.

Brenna kind of blinked. "You must not have come here often since you've been here. The last librarian was a guy and he left over the summer to run away to France or something. That's why we've got a new healer, too."

She shook her head, then supposed that to be fair, the prefects were often staffing the desk. Shrugging, she tilted her chair back so it was balancing on two legs. "Right," Brenna agreed. "What d'you think of the new professor?" she pressed. She'd only glimpsed her in the halls, and she was nosy.

“I hate the library.” Eline shrugged, glancing at the librarian again in distaste. “Its quiet, gloomy and just depressing.” She tried to remember how many times she had ventured into the library, maybe four or five times in the past four years.

Now that was depressing.

Eline had avoided it at all costs, and even paid some first year before to check out a book for her. She really did hate the smell of the old books, though, and the dust that had allowed itself into every nook and cranny. It made her sneeze.

“Do you mean Professor Silver?” Eline asked. “I like her, she’s nice and she’s not uptight like some of the others…”

Brenna had to grin a little, shaking her head slightly. She wasn't a huge fan of the library - she'd rather be on out the pitch at any given moment - but it had its uses.

She'd researched some interesting spells here, after all.

"Good. There're too many stuffy old professors here," Brenna decided - though she was thinking mostly of Binns, and mostly because she had an essay due there.

Sigh.

"The library's really not that bad you know. You can meet some really interesting people here."

“Like you?” Eline smirked. “Because you know, it’s not every day that you meet someone who steals your book.” Usually she would have insulted Brenna, but for some reason she didn’t. Apparently it was a good day for Eline.

Because, you know, she can’t ever be nice just for the sake of being nice. That’s just not her.

“I remember when I was in my first year, I freaked out when I went into History of Magic. I couldn’t believe they let a ghost teach in Hogwarts. I still don’t believe it… With this world though, everything is possible.” Eline smiled, she was being philosophical without even realizing it.

"Around here, people have more clever ways of stealing things. B'sides, I didn't steal it. I gave it back," she pointed out. "And let's be fair, here. Binns doesn't actually teach, you know? He recites notes that everyone's heard a billion times, in that dull droning monotone. I mean, it might be a neat subject if he, you know, was a little more enthusiastic about it."

She scoffed, and shrugged. "And really, he won't ever go over any modern history, right? So nothing that happened in like, the last fifty years is going to ever be covered. Our historical education is going to end with the end of his notes."

Well, maybe it was closer to thirty years.

Or even twenty.

Brenna wasn't always good with facts.

“To find out about Harry Potter, I had to ask around. That got me some dirty looks…” she rolled her eyes. Okay sure he saved millions of lives by defeating ickle Voldykins, but why did people have to give her death glares when she didn’t know? Using the excuse of being a Muggle born had tired her out after that day. “And Professor Binns starts with stupid things like… the Goblin rebellion.”

“But you did steal it,” Eline told her matter-of-factly. She put the book down and placed her hands on her hips. “It was in my possession and you took it from me. Meaning you stole it.”

Brenna shrugged. "The Goblin Rebellion isn't stupid. Ask Tris and Lan about it sometime. They'll act it out for you."

Well, they had for her, though she did have to wonder if that wasn't just one of those impromptu things that might never happen again. "If you aren't afraid of him, anyway," she replied, with a little bit of contempt and a little bit of challenge. She thought anyone who was afraid of Tristan was thick.

"And I didn't steal it. I relocated it."

“Why would I be afraid of them?” Eline blinked. “That’s ridiculous, I’m not afraid of anything!” Except thestrals, but she’d keep that to herself. Her comment was childish but she was careless.

“I bet you’re afraid of them,” she countered the argument, still sounding puerile. Eline’s lips twitched upward in amusement. Well, all of us have to release our inner child every once in a while.

"Not afraid of them," she said patiently. "Tristan. 'cause he's a werewolf. And I'm not afraid of Tristan," she countered. She'd been part of the Bow Brigade the first night he'd been allowed to stay in the castle in his fur.

"S'long as he takes his potion, he's fine. Just like having a big puppy wandering around."

Lan had been browsing some books behind Brenna, and he grinned, amused. He'd have to let Tris know he had a fan club, or something. A fan club who thought of him as a big puppy. Wondering if it was worth sticking around to continue eavesdropping, he pretended to be completely absorbed in the herbology books in the section he was in.

“A big puppy, huh?” Eline said, her eyes flickering toward Landon, knowing that nobody could be that interest in Herbology. Unless you were Professor Longbottom that is… but that was besides the point. He was obviously faking. “I guess you could say that.” She shoved her hands into her pockets, a plan forming in her mind. All she needed to do was have Brenna play along, and that didn’t seem too hard.

“What do you think about Landon, Brenna?” She asked, her eyes drifting to him again, hoping Brenna would catch on to her signal.

Lan grinned a little, trying not to snicker or give away to Brenna that he was there. This was ... actually kind of funny. Tilting his head, he winked at Eli if he caught her eye.

Brenna shrugged. "He's all right. Pretty funny, really, when he gets going, and he's not bad on the pitch. Why? Y'want to date him or something?"

It wasn't outside the realm of the possible. Lan had dated Rose last year, however briefly, so at least she knew he was interested in girls.

Brenna was never big on subtle, and had completely missed Eli's attempt to signal her.

Eline sighed at Brenna’s ignorance, was it really that difficult to read? She decided to play a trick on Brenna, then. Hopefully it wouldn’t offend her. With Eline’s attitude, would she really care about it? Most likely not.

Eline sighed, this time dreamily, and sunk into the chair opposite Brenna. She looked at her, leaning in close like she was about to tell her a vital detail about her life. Apparently they had both forgotten their assignments. “Don’t tell anyone but… I’d love to date him,” she gushed. “I mean, c’mon look at him, wouldn’t you? Date him, I mean.”

Brenna blinked and kind of made a face. "Date Lan? That'd be like, dating my brother or something."

Not that she had a brother or anything. Nor was she overly interested in dating boys. "No. But if you really wanted to, I could ask him for you. We have pickup games some nights. You know, before practices actually start? And he's usually there."

Lan had to bite down on his knuckles to keep from laughing, amusement gleaming in blue eyes. Oh, it was a shame Tristan was missing this. The other boy was going to kick himself for not coming down to the library with him.

Inhaling slowly, he moved a little further down the aisle, away from the girls. Not far away that he couldn't hear, but hopefully far enough away that any escaped laughter would be muffled.

Eline had to bite down onto her lip to prevent from laughing. Brenna actually believed her? She had to be one of the worst actresses ever! She usually put things over the edge and was far to dramatic.

“Do you think you could do that for me?” She asked, her voice getting higher in mock excitement. “But then again…” she averted her eyes insecurely, “I don’t think that would be too cool, y’know? Its kind of lame to have your friends ask guys out for you.” Woah, back up she just called Brenna her friend? Eline barely had any of those.

Brenna shrugged. "Not really. You ever listened to the older girls in our commons? They do it like, all the time. Oh, Amy, will you go ask Brad if he'll go to Hogsmeade with me this weekend, tee-hee?" she imitated the older girls in a falsetto, fluttering her lashes and everything.

She heard a noise, and whipped her head around to see who was behind them. When she saw who it was, she rolled her eyes. "Oh, ha-ha you guys."

Lan was red in the face from keeping the laughter back, and he grinned as he wandered over to their table, now that the jig was up. "Sorry, kiddo," he said as he ruffled Brenna's hair, grinning to Eli. "That wasn't half bad, by the way," he told her, his eyes slightly crinkled at the corners.

Eline covered her mouth as she laughed, trying to be as quiet as possible so they wouldn’t be kicked out of the library. She attempted to talk a few times but couldn’t get it out. When she finally controlled herself, she looked at Brenna, smiling.

“I’m pretty sure I’m the worst actress ever. I can’t believe you fell for that.” She told her, smile widening as she replayed the memory in her mind, giggling again. “I’m not trying to be mean for once though, I swear.” Eline was well aware of her personality problems.

Brenna snorted, and rolled her eyes. "What was there to fall for? We were talking about Tristan, so of course Lan came up." She scoffed faintly, flushing a little at having been caught in such a silly trap.

Lan nodded. "It's true. It's like, we're the same person sometimes."

"Speaking of, where is he?"

Lan shrugged. "I dunno. He said he had to go upstairs to get something, but when he wasn't back down in ..." he trailed off and smiled. "He probably fell asleep."

Well, there was probably a bed involved, anyway.

"I'll wake him up before dinner though. We're probably going out again tonight if you wanted to come with." He glanced to Eli. "And you can come watch, if you want."

Eline shrugged. “I have nothing better to do,” she said. She did have to finish her homework for Muggle Studies about stoves but she could just wake up early to finish it. Or skip breakfast. Or just not do it at all. Probably the last one, even if she risked getting yelled at.

“I can take pictures, I haven’t done much this year, usually I’ll have a hundred by the first week…” She said a hundred pictures like it was nothing. Her camera was about the only thing from her Muggle life that she ever brought to Hogwarts. She couldn’t live without it. She pushed her bangs to the side and flashed her camera which always seemed to come out of nowhere, as if by magic.

Well, she was a witch.

"Brill'," Lan said with a grin. "I'll see you lot later, then. Gotta go spread the word in case people mysteriously forgot we sometimes have games after dinner."

He waved to them before he headed out, already composing the story to incorporate pauses for Tristan's inevitable laughter, 'oh man you should haves' and 'I wish I'd been theres'.

Brenna watched him go, then glanced to Eli, smirking slightly. "So you don't really want to date him, right? You were just saying that stuff 'cause he was behind me?"

"You could ask Rose Weasley. She dated him a little last year. Bet she could tell you loads about him," Brenna assured her with a grin. "Besides, isn't like, half the point of dating someone getting to know them? Or is really just all about the snogging?"

She really couldn't get behind snogging. It seemed kind of disgusting to her. But without the snogging, what was the difference between dating and being friends?

Ah, the many mysteries of life.

“That’d be a great conversation. ‘Hey Rose, you used to go out with Lan right? How was he?’” Eline smiled at Brenna to show that she wasn’t trying to be mean. She was doing that a lot lately. Maybe she was turning over a new leaf?

Doubt it.

“But I’d never go out with someone I didn’t know, I mean I’m getting to know you and we’re not going out.” Eline paused then processed her words. “Okay, bad example but you get what I’m trying to say, right?”

Brenna blinked at the odd logic. "Right, but unless you were into girls, you wouldn't be going out with me, anyway. And you know me. I mean, we've been in the same commons for years now."

Her head tilted slightly before she shrugged it off. "So if you only date people you know, how do you get to know people well enough to decide if you want to date them?"

“If its there, its there. If not then…” she shrugged. “I don’t know really, I don’t get into relationships that much. Boys aren’t my main concern, after all. And I’m definitely not into girls. If I like somebody I‘ll tell them, I don‘t know him enough to like him. Get me?” Eline ran her fingers through her hair. Because of stupid Brenna she was beginning to think of Landon in that way.

“But what about you? How do you figure out if you like somebody?” She tilted her head. It was an attempt to get things off of her shoulders and onto Brenna, not the nicest thing to do but it was exactly what Eline was doing.

"Well, it should be pretty obvious, shouldn't it? I mean, I can tell Autumn doesn't like me, but she loves me, y'know, 'cause she has to? But I can really tell when I'm annoying her."

She looked thoughtful. "And if I'm feeling generous, I'll back off."

Brenna shrugged, glancing around. "I dunno. I asked my mum once when I'd know if I was in love with someone. After she decided I shouldn't be in love with anyone 'til I was at least eighteen, she said you'd just know. She said you like to hang out with them, and spend time with them, and that you think about them a lot, and when you have important news, they're the first person you want to tell. Stuff like that."

Her nose wrinkled briefly. "Guess I'm lucky. I haven't gotten all obsessed with anyone yet."

“ ‘Love risks degenerating into obsession.’ Have you heard that quote before? Its by this guy who won a Nobel Peace Prize…” Eline began babbling, “He’s an American though so you probably don’t know him… I have a thing for Americans, I love their accents.” If she had the choice she’d move to America, but seeing as she’d probably have to take care of Elaine when she was older, she doubted ever living there. Elaine wouldn’t like the prospect of a plane or boat ride.

Maybe she loved America because it was a world away from certain stupid, irritating parents who refuse to take care of their own children since ‘they’re so young’. Maybe.

“I’m not obsessed with anyone yet either, but I guess it happens to everyone one day. At least once, anyway. Apparently you haven’t lived till you’ve fallen in love. Says my grandmother. Supposedly when she met my grandfather it felt like she had been slapped.” Eline couldn’t really make sense of this, isn’t love suppose to be a wonderful experience, not a painful one? Well, how would she know? She’d never been in love like that.

"I heard there's someone out there for everyone," Brenna agreed with a nod. She hadn't heard the quote, and opted not to comment on it. Or on American accents; they didn't really do much for her.

Australian ones however were a completely different story. "Think I'd like to go to Australia," she said, following the train of thought to a vocalization. "For the accents."

Then she cocked her head. "Slapped, really? I'll have to be on the look out for any slap-like feelings then."

“I’ve decided something!” Eline clapped her hands together, smiling. “I’m going to find love this year!” It was a mediocre decision but between being childish and careless, it was exactly Eline. Then she thought over her words and realized how stupid she was being. Love was suppose to come to you, you weren’t supposed to hunt it down. “Or at least a boyfriend. I haven’t had one since I was in Muggle school,” she said less enthusiastically. Did boyfriends come to you too? Maybe you went to them…

"We should both do it!" She encouraged. Honestly, Eline didn't think she'd be able to do it alone.

Brenna looked moderately skeptical. "So, what, we track down some poor boy, decide he's our boyfriend, and go from there?" She cocked her head. "Do we have to ... you know. Snog and stuff?"

'cause otherwise, why couldn't she just say one of her guy friends was her boyfriend, for all that?

"I dunno if I really want a boyfriend," she hedged. Of course, if Eline insisted, she'd go along because she couldn't exactly turn her back on a competition, however impromptu it was, or how little she actually wanted to participate. A challenge was a challenge, after all.

Unless he was on the quidditch team, but she really couldn't see herself dating any of the boys on their house team. Well, none of the ones currently on it, anyway.

“Well how about this, I try to help you with your goal--if that’s possible since I can’t fly all that well--and you help me with mine, if that is possible. It could be like a… friendship thing?” Eline asked warily. The last person she had declared her friend, she blew off in about three days. Could she risk this again?

It couldn’t help trying, she supposed. If worst came to worst, she’d just have no friends again and she was fine with that. More of… used to it actually. Either she insulted her way out of friendships or she got bored. She doubted that she could get bored with Brenna though, maybe annoyed instead.

"You could do both." Brenna decided. "You could get a boyfriend in another house who's on the team, and distract the hell out of him so he doesn't fly as well. You know, keep him up really late the night before a game and stuff."

She paused. "Like Landon. You could definitely do that."

Though she doubted Lan would fall for a distraction like that. Still, it might happen.

“I might just do that for you,” Eline giggled at the idea. Landon? A possibility. She never said she wouldn’t date him. She wasn’t sure if he’d like her though… Wait, back up, why was she thinking about him? She really must have been changing. Eli wondered if it was for better or worst, though. She preferred the former but she could be losing her mind so it wasn’t a guarantee.

“I’d feel bad if I went out with a guy just to distract him though.” She’d just stay in denial until she could find some other guy on a Quidditch team. One who didn’t matter.

So Lan mattered to her now? Brenna had completely screwed her up now.

"Right," Brenna said. "Well, maybe some guy will ... you know. Fall into your lap or something, and it'll be love at first sight."

Sure, it was unlikely, but that didn't mean it wouldn't happen. Hadn't a lot of great loves been spawned as a result of klutziness coupled with gravity?

Brenna was sure there was a section in a history book about it somewhere.

“Maybe,” Eline shrugged and glanced out the window. The sun was setting. They had been in the library for that long? Talk about a record on Eli’s account. She picked up her book and stood up.

“Well… it’s almost time for dinner. I have to check this out, I guess I’ll see you tonight?” Eline asked, brushing her bangs out of her eyes. She had so many weird habits she stopped counting. She fancied that she didn’t sound too hopeful, but she probably did.

"Yeah, sure. You can even walk with me down to the pitch," she teased lightly before she dropped her attention back to her own essay.

Oh right. That's why she was here.

Well, there'd be time after dinner and after the match. Closing her parchment in her book, she started to pack her things away.

“What do you think I‘m going to trip on somebody‘s broom?” Eline smirked, knowing she‘d probably do that. She had to deleted some photos off of her camera anyway, so when they were getting ready she could do that. Eline had never been to one of the mock games, but maybe she’d learn a few things. Like how to not crash a broom, that was a hard one for her.

Brenna grinned. "I think it'd be hard to manage that," she assured her. "It isn't like they go about kicking them down the hallway where you could trip."

Though she supposed Tristan might do something like that for a joke at some point ... but generally, they carried their brooms properly.

“Peeves might do that.” The little bugger had thrown five dung bombs at her in first year and she smelled like a skunk for a week. It wasn’t a very pleasant experience, and they really didn’t get along much after that. He tended to make things explode on her lately. Like her lunch… That was embarrassing.

Eline walked over to the desk and checked out her book then shoved it into her blue messenger bag--blue was her favorite color--then she looked at Brenna.

“So when are you going to finish your stuff?” she asked.

"I dunno. Later. Before bed or something," she said with a casual shrug. Odds were, she could get a classmate to let her copy the important things. She could be very ... insistent if she had to be.

Of course, she might be too tired after the match to bother with a bath let alone homework, but she supposed they'd see.

Either way.

She glanced over to Eline with a little grin before they started out of the library, and presumably toward the Great Hall.

“I don’t know how the Gryffindor’s do it,” Eline glanced at the four flights of stairs they had to go down. Since the Hufflepuff common room was in the cellar, she was used being able to run to the common room from anywhere. She hated climbing stairs as much as she disliked the library, that’s why she never signed up for Divination.

Their trip was short, although Eline complained a lot and hid behind Brenna when she saw Peeves, and soon they were in the Great Hall.
