Lost books?
Who: Scorpius, Aries
When: August 26th, 2020, early evening
Where: Malfoy Manor
Status: Completed
Summary: When he decides to look something up in a textbook, Scorpius notices that his charms text is gone. He attempts to track it down by finding what his siblings are up to, and simply assumes it was Aries' doing. The confrontation with his brother leads to a dead end, so he leaves - but watches Aries' room until Aries leaves. He searches Aries' room and comes up empty handed, but encounters his brother chucking the book into a potted plant. The two have another mild confrontation and Scorpius points out that if Aries wants to read up on Charms, he has his own text, which will help him understand the spells better. Aries heads off - perhaps to do just that - and Scorpius retreats to his room.

He wouldn't have noticed at all if he hadn't had the inclination to look up something in one of his text books. He wasn't generally much for reading ahead, but he'd started thinking and it had gone on a tangent.

So he'd rummaged through his mostly-packed trunk to look for his new Charms text, and frowned when he failed to find it.

Oh, he had all the rest of them, but not his Charms book. Come to think of it, the books looked out of order, too.

The list of suspects was very, very narrow. His parents wouldn't bother, which left his siblings. Libra generally knew better, but could be dared into things ... but either way, that put Aries behind it.

Rolling his eyes, absolutely certain it had been stolen and not merely misplaced, Scorpius stormed out into the hallway to look for his siblings.

Aries had found the textbook earlier in the day and taken it back to his room to have a good read. It hadn't even occurred to him that he might need to ask Scorpius for the book. After all... was it Scorpius who had paid for it?

Not to Aries' knowledge. He imagined their father had bought it. And if their father had bought it, then Aries had just as much right to it, yes?

That was his way of thinking on it, anyway.

Just in case Scorpius didn't see it this way, he had drawn the curtains around his bed while he read to keep Scorpius from accidentally spotting him with it.

He listened for the tell-tale footfalls, or Libra's giggle that would indicate the missing book was part of a joke. His lips pursed in annoyance before he roamed down to his sister's room, peeking in to see if she was there, or if the book was - but he doubted Libra was behind it.

Not with this being Aries' first year.

Scorpius sighed before he turned down the hall toward Aries' room, rapping on the door frame, he let himself in. "If you've got my book, you've got all of ten seconds to toss it out before I tell dad you've been going through my things."

Aries considered for a moment whether stuffing the book under his pillow would be a bad idea. He didn't know how sure Scorpius was that it was him at the moment.

Perhaps... if he played his cards right... he could convince his brother that the book had been simply misplaced.

Decision made, Aries jammed the book down between the mattress and the wall before pulling the curtains aside to give Scorpius an annoyed look. "What makes you think I've got it?" he demanded, lifting his chin slightly. "Maybe I'll tell him you've been bullying me."

Little brothers ... were such ... a pain. He ran his hand down his face, but didn't actually step into Aries' room. "Because Libra would've left more of a mess, mum and dad wouldn't have been going through my things, and the house elves know better than to get into stuff they aren't told to touch. So, my dear brother, that just leaves you."

Or he'd left the book lying out somewhere, but he was 99% certain he hadn't. "Toss it out," he ordered from the doorway.

Aries narrowed his eyes a fraction before twisting around so that he was sitting more comfortably on his bed, legs dangling over the edge while he eyed his brother.

"Tch, maybe Libra told the house elves to do it. Think of that? She was whining earlier about no one playing with her." Aries shrugged carelessly. "More likely you left it somewhere."

Frowning thoughtfully, Aries slid off his bed. "Where'd you leave it last?"

"I had it last in my trunk, which is where I looked for it. It wasn't there, and my books were out of order. Which means someone was rifling through them. And Libra wouldn't tell the house elves to do anything. Dad told her not to."

Which, often, was as effective as speaking to a brick wall. Sometimes he wondered if Libra really did forget everything she was told, or if she knew perfectly well that she could get away with murder if she just cried a little.

Aries scowled. He should have remembered to put the books back how they had been, but he'd been thinking about other things when he had pilfered the textbook.

"Maybe you did it in your sleep," Aries suggested with another shrug as he moved over his desk to sort through the papers sitting there. He needed something to do with his hands for a moment. "What d'you need the stupid book for, anyway?"

It was a pity he hadn't thought to be read it in Libra's room. It would have been easy to plant it there and slip out that way.

"I wanted to look something up," he said. "To see if there was a difference in the wand motions for ..." he trailed off. "You should just toss it out if you've got it. If I go talk to Libra and she manages to tie you to it, you're going to be in trouble. If you just hand it over now, I won't even tell dad."

Or rather, he wouldn't tattle. He might still mention it to Draco.

Aries snorted. He knew for a fact that Libra hadn't seen him. He was even fairly sure that the house elves hadn't caught a glimpse of the book in his possession, but you never could tell with those sneaky little buggers.

"I didn't take it," he insisted, glancing back over his shoulder to give Scorpius an exasperated look. "I'm expecting an apology when you find where you misplaced it, just so you know."

After he finished skimming over it, Aries had ever intention of dropping it into the potted plant farthest from his room. Maybe he could claim a ghoul had somehow gotten into the house.

"Well, expect in one hand ..." he smirked before he pushed away from his brother's doorway. Maybe he'd con Libra into luring Aries out ... he had a couple left over chocolate frogs he could probably bribe her with. Once Aries was out, he'd look over his room.

Unless Libra knew something about it.

Shaking his head, he started down the hall. He ducked around a corner, peering toward Aries' room to see if he'd come out with the book, or if he really didn't have it.

Aries waited, tilting his head slightly to the side to listen to his brother's footsteps until he wasn't able to make them out anymore. It looked like, for now, he was safe.

Which meant it was time to get rid of the evidence. Once Scorpius had somewhat forgotten about it, Aries assumed he could always go get the book from where he dumped it later. Unless it was found.

Just so long as it wasn't found in his room, he didn't care.

Crossing back to his bed, Aries leaned across it to tug the book free from where he'd jammed it earlier. He tucked it under his shirt, fully aware that it was probably an iffy hiding place at best before he headed out of the room and made straight for the staircase downstairs.

He was walking quietly enough... he just had to hope that he didn't run into anyone along the way.

Scorpius smirked as he watched Aries' retreating back. Ducking into his brother's room, he started to search around, reasoning that if Aries had had it, he wouldn't have hidden it terribly well.

He pulled open drawers and felt around in the clothing before moving to check the closet. Under the bed, between the mattress and the base, between the mattress and the walls.

Well, maybe his brother hadn't done anything with it.

... or he'd left with it to hide it somewhere else.

Rolling his eyes at himself, Scorpius ducked back into the hallway, heading in the direction Aries had gone, and moving just as quietly.

Aries grinned to himself when he reached the bottom of the stairs and immediately sped up to reach the entryway. Just up ahead was a potted plant that he secretly wanted to pour muggle weed killer in.

A book would do for now.

Aries strode forward, pretended to peer out through the door, then turned to head back for the stairs. As he turned, he tossed the book at the plant behind his back.

Now he got to feel all smug. That had gone perfectly.

Scorpius was standing at the top of the stairs when Aries started to head back up. Given the angle, he'd seen the book-toss, and he smirked as he leaned against the banister. "Something you want to share, brother dearest?"

His arms crossed over his chest as he regarded his sib before he turned to lean against the wall, tilting his chin to keep his eyes on Aries.

Aries froze, one foot lifted slightly to take a step. Slowly, he lowered it.

"You're getting to be as bloody sneaky as Libra," he accused, already switching into sulking mode. He really didn't like being found out like this.

Figuring he didn't have anything else to lose at this point, Aries rolled his eyes. "I was feeding the plant. Mum likes that one, doesn't she? Wouldn't want it to go and die or anything."

"Feeding it," he echoed. "So if I go down there and look, my charms book won't be in the pot?"

He started to move down the stairs, intending to inspect the plant and fully expecting Aries to impede him.

"And where do you think Libra learned it from?" Though that was hardly the case. Their sister was just ... naturally sneaky.

"Always thought she learned it because she had to. She had to find some way to get desert before dinner and not be caught," Aries reasoned, moving to step in front of Scorpius.

He thought for a minute, trying to see what outrageous lie would fit best. If he was lucky, the bloody plant might actually eat the book if he gave it enough time. It certainly seemed to trip him up often enough.

"You might find some plant food transfigured to look like your book," he said, lifting an eyebrow to see how that would be taken.

He smirked as he tried to move around his little brother. "Who would have transfigured it then? You? Mum? Dad? Or is Libra doing advanced magic now?"

Shifting to put his back to the banister, he tried to slide past Aries - lifting him out of the way if necessary - to get down to the bottom of the stairs and head for the plant.

Aries scowled as he was lifted aside. He hated when that happened. Still scowling, he stalked after his brother.

"Yeah," he continued, not really convinced he'd be able to stall any longer. "Libra's going to outdo us bother before she even turns nine."

"Right," he agreed. He pushed aside the fronds of the plant before he lifted out the book from where it had fallen. Holding it up to show Aries, his arched his brows. "So if I go ask her to turn this back into plant food, she'll get right on that for me? Undo the spell she's put on the food?"

He shook his head slightly. "You know," he said. "They feed liars to the giant squid. I told you that, right?"

"They do not," Aries protested before remembering that he was supposed to be pretending to not be a liar.

"And even if they did," he continued, catching himself. "I don't think I've got anything to worry about. What do they do to paranoid older brothers who never trust anyone?"

Give them awards, maybe.

"Praise them for being so clever and skeptical," he said before he started back up the stairs, brushing some dirt from the pot off of his book. "What were you doing this this, anyway? It's loads too advanced for you. You've got your own texts to be looking at."

Though he supposed if he'd been a first year with an older brother, he would've wanted to see what was ahead.

After all, he still tried to get into his father's personal collection of books. The ones he wouldn't just leave in the library for Scorpius to stumble over.

Sure, all right, he had no idea what was in the books, but it had to be good, right, if they were hidden?

Aries snorted. He'd expected that response.

"Mine are boring," he whined, finally giving up the game. "They've got rubbish in there like... like... levitating feathers and the like. Libra can do that without magic. And beetles to buttons?"

Aries made a face just thinking about it. How pointless was that? What would you do with a button that had once been a beetle? Why would you even want one?

"It's all a load of crock."

Scorpius laughed softly. "Aries, you git. You have to start small. If you don't understand the basics, and the premise, you're more apt to muck up the advanced spells."

He paused. "Besides, if you understand the principles, you can make new spells based on it. And no sense bringing her into it. She's not supposed to be doing magic, so it doesn't count what she does on accident."

Aries rolled his eyes, not impressed. "I think I could pick up the principles well enough along the way if you'd just let me read the whole book."

Maybe. He'd been having a little trouble slogging through it earlier. Some of it had made sense, but a lot of it had been completely beyond him.

At the mention of Libra, Aries had to grin. "I'm not sure... Who says it's on accident? I think she's getting pretty good of doing what she wants when she gets mad enough to use magic."

"Well, she'd better be careful with that."

He shook his head. "Go read your own book then. It won't do you any good to read mine, when half the spells are explained in the first year book, and then aren't elaborated on further in this one. All the principles you could possibly want are in there."

He regarded his brother for a moment longer, wondering what house he was going to wind up in. He assumed Slytherin, but ... well, there was always a chance, wasn't there, he'd wind up somewhere else? A Potter had wound up in his house, so maybe Aries would wind up in Gryffindor.

Scorpius almost shuddered at the thought.

Aries sighed perhaps a touch more theatrically that was strictly necessary before shaking his head and giving up. Scorpius usually knew best, after all. Though Aries was loath to admit it.

"Fine," he grumbled. "I'll go read mine then read yours." The blond tossed a smirk back over his shoulder as he picked up the pace, taking the stairs back up two at a time.

Scorpius watched his brother go, shaking his head a little as he followed after him more slowly. In the hall, he glanced into Libra's room again before continuing on to his own.

Settling his Charms book in his trunk, he locked it this time - in case Aries or Libra got ambitious later on.

He flopped onto his back on his bed, sliding his wand out of his sleeve. Sure, he couldn't do anything now, not at home, but he could look at his wand, couldn't he?
