Day 32
Who: Rose Tyler and the Doctor
What: Making dinner and having a chat
When: Day 32, evening
Where: TARDIS kitchen
Status: Incomplete
Rating: TBD

Rose sat at the table in the kitchen, sipping from a glass of wine. She liked doing this, cooking dinner and getting a chance to unwind a little. Of course, she usually ate alone. The Doctor tended to be busy figuring a way off this place, so she'd leave something for him before either going back to her room given by the planet or her room in the TARDIS.

She still felt guilty, about the whole Andy thing,  but knew she did the right thing. She loved the Doctor, and she couldn't lead Andy on. Putting her glass down on the table, she stood and checked on her pasta. Nearly ready. Noticing that it was, she began setting everything out.

The smell of boiling pasta hung heavy in the TARDIS' corridors that it was nearly impossible for the Doctor to continue to ignore the hungry rolling sensation of his stomach or the lightness of his head. He'd been at this for hours, his back to the floor's grating, his head shoved up underneath the TARDIS' main controls. His fingers felt numb and it was just making the whole of him feel quite unlike himself.

Climbing down the winding stair, down into the depths of the TARDIS where the replicators and kitchenette remained thoroughly under utilized; he sidled up to the table, slouching down into the chair with a look akin to a petulant child. He was frustrated, tired, and had a bruised ego. It was hard for him to maintain his bubbly air at the moment.

Rose turned when she heard footsteps, her eyebrows raised a little. So he was joining her? Pulling out a spare plate and another glass she quickly poured out wine for him. He really did not look happy about his situation, and it was clear he had yet again not found a way off of this planet.

"Here," she said, handing him the glass. "You need to take a break, Doctor. You're working too hard."

The right side of his mouth turned into a slight upturn, appreciative that she set out a cup and plate for him. He'd gotten to used to not being taken care of, and that was the complete truth. He was turning back into the same person he was before he'd met her - hard, simply put.

Taking a deep breath his shoulders rose and fell as he tried to relax in the rounded chair.

"I need to get off this planet," he grumbled from behind the hands that rubbed as his eyes and cheeks. "Sorry," he said apologetically as he winced thinking of his own tone - she didn't deserve that.

Rose placed the glass down before kneeling to hold his hands. She knew he found this difficult, being stuck here, but it was hard to see him like this.

"Yes you do, and we will. You'll find a way. But the more worked up about it you get, the less you'll be able to focus on what you're doing."

She sighed, squeezing his hands. She really just wanted to make him keep taking care of himself but it was seeming to be impossible. After all she couldn't force him.

As his hands came away from his face it seemed she seemed to take them up again - granting a squeeze and a comment to which he couldn't help but deflate a little more. It seemed his ego was bruised with each hour he failed to get them off the planet, each day it was just another kick in the stomach.

"I know," he said shutting his eyes and shaking his head. He wasn't sure right now what he needed more - dinner or a nap. The weariness of just constant failure was wearing on him like a river's current across a rock.

"What are you cooking, anyway?"

At his question, Rose pushed herself up an back over to the meal. It seemed ready, so satisfied she turned to him.

"Pasta in a tomato sauce. Simple, but tastes nice. Want some?"

She hoped he'd say yes. Really hoped he would and that he wouldn't leave and go back to the console room.

"How could I say no to an actual meal?" He asked with a grin. It wasn't like he could even fathom not eating now. While the controls and his experiments and the frequencies were all running through his head like electricity - the more palpable sense of hunger was driving them out like demons at an exorcism. Or, perhaps it was just a matter that the hunger had a louder voice.

Getting up from his chair he closed the distance between the table and a nearby water dispenser - deciding water a better choice than wine. Afterall, he'd be going back to work again shortly, anyway.

Plucking a cup from a nearby shelf he pushed it into the slot and depressed a button, holding in while the machine hummed a bit and filled it.

Rose laughed a little when he went for the water. She wasn't surprised. Putting the food on the plates, she placed them both on the table.

"I've never been a great cook, that's why there's nothing fancy. I know enough to make an alright meal but..."

Why was she defending herself before he even commented on her cooking? She knew he'd appreciate it, even if he didn't like it. He always did.

Taking up a second glass he carried them both to the table and set them with a clunk next to his plate. The chair pulled up behind him he settled in with a distinct look of merriment.

"Ah, you know me, Rose; it's not the fanciness of the meal that makes it," taking up his fork he speared the pasta and twirled it about in the sauce. This must have been the first real meal he'd had in a couple of days - not having any sort of notion in mind of leaving the big blue box to head to the resort. No, he had work to do here, afterall.

Taking a bite he groaned happily, his stomach happily anticipating being filled. "It's good!" he said from a full mouth before swallowing and taking up a napkin to wipe away any sauce that may have lingered behind. A bit of water as a chaser and he was on to round two. Not quite able to prioritize conversation in front of food at the moment.

Rose laughed a little when he groaned. So he really did like it, he didn't sound like he was lying. She watched him eat for a moment and guessed she was right. He hadn't ate properly in a while, he was eating like a man who hadn't. Sitting down opposite him, she began to eat her own.

"I could make this a regular thing, if you want. Make something for you. That way you don't have to worry about that."

"You take too good care of me, Rose Tyler" he said, a couple of noodles slurped up as he realized they hung about a little bit longer than they ought to.

"So, have you met many other people yet? How about Jack's team? I've only really seen them in passing," another twirl of his fork and the Doctor grinned away as he waited for an answer.

"Far from it," she said with a smile, scrunching up her nose at the sound of the slurping.

"I haven't met them just talked to them in the journals and things really. Seem a nice lot, I guess."

"More than nice," he replied, taking a drought from his water glass.

"There are geniuses, and kings of goblins, and quirky people, and all sorts, really," For the first time in a while the Doctor actually looked excited at a thought other than blasting off the damned rock that is Mirage.

She didn't want to tell him that she had a little argument with one of Jack's team because of the Doctor. She grinned a little at the excitement in his eyes. She hadn't seen that since they were travelling.

"Brilliant isn't it?"

"Fantastic, I'd say," he said with a comical grin.

"You should get out there and meet more of them, Rose; they seem to be a fairly good lot."

It was always strange hearing that word not in aNothern accent, but it still made her smile none the less.

"I've met a few, just not many."

She looked back down at her food before taking a bite.

"Besides you need me here. Said you neede help."

"Hey, lots of places have a 'north,' well except for places at the top, like the north pole, hard to get more north than there...." A climactic bite of his pasta and his plate was nearly cleared.

"Of course I want you here, Rose; but, I want you to have a life, too, outside of this box, even if it's on a planet that is a bit imposing for now..." He shrugged a bit his look earnest.

Rose laughed and shook her head at him, grinning a little when she noticed he'd finished his food. So he actually ate all of it? That was quite the shock. She sobered up slightly when he mentioned having a life outside the TARDIS.

"I do. Just...not so much anymore."

Not since Andy, anyway.

He sort of pulled his lips into a hmph of sorts, gnawing on the inside of his cheek a little. It was unlike Rose not to want to explore, to see, to understand. It made him sad to see her cloistered in this way.

"How're you liking the pasta?" He asked, changing the subject and taking a drink from his glass.

Rose looked down at her plate, realising she'd only ate half. Taking another quick bite, she smiled.

"I love it though it's really filling. I'm already thinking I can't eat much more."

She really was a liar sometimes. She had just lost her appetite.

"Back before the planet grabbed you - how was your mum?" It was sort of odd for him to think of Jackie Tyler and food together; but, he had to think that Rose missed her cooking, even based upon nostalgia.

"Fine. I have a baby brother now, remember I told you Mum was pregnant?"

She missed them, but she was good at hiding this. Most of the time.

How could he forget the conversation on the beach?

"You never did say what the name was, you know," he leaned backward in his chair, half tempted to prop his feet up on the tabletop.

"I wonder what Donna's up to these days," he muttered absent mindedly, "You'd like her, I think."

"Tony. Lovely little baby he is too. His eyes have already changed to brown, Mum said that happened when I was born too."

She instantly felt a twinge in her heart and tears started to form, so she stood up, starting to clear everything away. She didn't want him to see her cry, so she had to be busy.

"Is she who you're with now?"

Some how that hurt her a little too. She knew he'd get someone knew but never thought too much about it.
