WHO: James Norrington and Legolas
WHAT: James explores, mopes and indulges in a case of mistaken identity.
WHEN: Day 29, morning
WHERE: The library
RATING: I can't imagine two proper gentlemen going above PG
STATUS: Incomplete

James had risen that morning, bathed and dressed, choosing one of his uniforms rather than any of his civilian clothes. Despite the shockingly familiar room and all of the equally familiar items in it, he still felt uneasy and uncomfortable in this place. The uniform helped him feel a little more secure. A shield if you will.

He had his breakfast in his room, working out how to ask for that was easy enough, then he decided that he might explore this Mirage place. One ought to know the lay of the land, even in such a strange place. There might be some advantage and perhaps he might find some sign of the sea.

He walked calmly down the corridors in what Gillette had once called his 'Commodore walk'. The measured, stately pace that worked so well both on dry land and at sea to keep him upright, moving and dignified and his position demanded. He peered in the doors as he walked through the main building and in most cases he backed out quickly, either because the contents baffled him or because they horrified him. Finally he opened a door to find a quite, elegantly decorated and extremely well-stocked library.

He gave a sigh of relief and walked inside. Now this was a place that not only made sense to him but that he rather liked. He walked over to the nearest book shelf and began to peruse the titles of the books.

Legolas eyed the snowball fight. It didn't look like it would be winding down anytime soon, but he actually wasn't all that interested. Or, rather, he was, but since nearly all his friends, as well as his two lovers, had been taken, he felt an urge to reconnect with the place. He could do that better on his own, he figured.

So, instead of joining the fun, he had a quick breakfast in the cafe and then headed out. Slowly, he made his way through the various rooms, just looking them over. Some of them still made no sense to the elven prince. He may have had a crash course in high-tech stuff, but that didn't mean he was comfortable with it by any means. Most rooms just got a curious look, and then he moved on.

Finally, though, he came to a place that caught his interest. So many books all in one place. He was somewhat in awe. He came from a place where even one of the very wise such as Elrond or Galadriel had only a couple of dozen of tomes. It came from the fact that there were no printing presses on Middle Earth. Books took a long time to make by hand.

But here, there were tomes all around. He pushed open the door and then looked around, awe on his fine elven features. And to think, it was nearly empty. He didn't understand it. But he did enter the library, moving quietly, silently as only an elf can.

It hadn't taken James long to find the section of the library that held the maritime books though he wasn't sure whether that was through his own ability to work out the filing system or whether this strange place had something to do with it. He suspected the latter but wasn't going to argue about it given he had found what he wanted.

Even more so when he found books that clearly came from his future. He had taken one of those books out of the shelf and was leafing through it, fascinated by the maps within it, fascinated by the sheer extent of them, far beyond what was known in his time.

As he read, movement from one side caught his eye and he looked up... to see what seemed to be a very familiar person coming towards him even though he didn't quite look right, which was surely a trick of the light.

"Mr Turner?" he said with surprise. Part of him was pleased to see someone he knew here in this place though he quickly pushed aside the wish that it had been Elizabeth. She had made her choice and it wasn't him.

When the only other occupant of the library spoke, he froze in place and looked enquiringly at him. He remembered that Giselle had once called him Mister, and assumed it was some sort of common human adress where she came from. But no one, other than her, had used it on him. Not to mention that he wasn't named Turner.

Slowly, he turned to look at the man. His eyes were sparkling with amusement, though he spoke soberly enough. "I fear you have mistaken me, my Lord, for someone else." He tilted his head to the side so that his hair, long and golden, fell over his shoulder. "I am not called Turner, not even on Mirage."

He walked with his customary grace over to the man to get a better look at him. Of course, being an elf, he was taller than most humans, well over six feet. "What is your name, my Lord? And why is it that you think you know me? I have never been mistaken for a human before."

James watched with confusion as the othe rman walked over and as he got closer the saw the differences. The blond hair instead of dark and the ears... James' eyes widened momentarily when he saw the man's pointed ears. The other man was also taller than Turner. James' own height of 6'2" had often caused him problems on the tightly cramped ships of the Royal Navy but not enough to ever dim his enthusiasm for the sea. Turner's inches had been far better suited to the sea.

"Forgive me," he said with a blush and short bow. "On first glance, you looked very much like an acquaintance of mine... a Mr William Turner. The resemblance is uncanny..." He trailed off then cleared his throat as he remembered his manners. "I am Commodore James Norrington. I am no Lord, I'm afraid." Not yet anyway, that was a hope and dream for the future if he should continue his successes in the Caribbean. "I do apologise for disturbing you."

The elf, several inches taller than the other man, gazed down at him. Amusement shone in his eyes, though as always, he was polite enough. "Of course. No harm was done, I think." He smiled confidingly at the other man. "In truth, I was becoming bored with my own company."

He tilted his head to the side curiously. "Tell me of this person? If he looks so like me, perhaps he is like me in other ways." Sometimes, his curiousity got the best of him, and this was looking to be one of those times. He was not without his sense of vanity, which would enjoy an exercise like this.

"Oh. No, forgive me. I am very rude..." He dropped into a semi-formal elven bow. "I am Prince Legolas of the woodland realm of Mirkwood. Commodore... as you say." he had no idea what that was, but he would call him by the strange title.

James smiled politely; he had long become used to his own company and had cultivated interests to take that into accounts. This was in part due to his solitary nature but was also caused by the distance involved in his rank. Promotion was, of course, what he had always sought but it was improper for a Commodore to fratenise with the lower ranks.

He cocked his head slightly as he examined the other man. Despite the minor differences, the similarities between this man and Turner was somewhat unnerving. "You have the advantage in height," he said slowly. "Turner is somewhat shorter than myself though he would be considered of a normal height where I am from. I am considered tall. His hair is dark and, while long, still somewhat shorter than yours. Nor are his ears... pointed like yours. But the face..." He shook his head ruefully. "In truth, despite the differences, you and Mr Turner could be twins, your faces are so alike." He frowned slightly as he recalled the way the man had walked towards him. "You both have a certain grace in your movements though you do have the advantage there. Turner's grace, like mine, is developed through years of practice with the sword. Yours seems too innate to be anything but natural."

He raised an eyebrow at the princely title and bowed again, a bit more deeply this time. "I am quite pleased to meet you, Your Highness. I confess though that I have never heard of Mirkwood. May I ask where it lies?"

The elf returned the smile, but his was more than polite. He was glad to meet this man who knew someone who looked like him. It seemed very unlikely, somehow. James was obviously a human. Would that mean his friend was, as well? It was all very intruiging, and he was glad that he'd come to this place.

"How interesting." He looked consideringly at the man. "He does not have elven ears, then. How is it that a human would share my facial features, and not be an elf?" It was an honest question. Nowhere on Middle Earth were there humans that were as delicately-featured as an elf. This was a fascinating puzzle to him. "Are you certain he is not simply covering his ears up? Perhaps if he were here, we could..." But he trailed off.

"I have not seen you here before." He realized suddenly that he'd been very rude. "Are you new to Mirage?" The elven prince shook his head, clearing it of that concern. "Mirkwood lies deep in the heart of Middle Earth, my friend. It is a place far from here, and it is no surprise that you have never heard of it."

James blinked and gave Legolas a curious look. "Elf? But..." He caught himself before he could blurt out anything more. Elves were small odd-looking creatures from children's tales, not the tall elegant man standing in front of him. And yet, why would he lie? It seemed that this place had taken more than just those from his future.

He gave a small smile. "No, his ears are the same as mine. But people come in all shapes and forms where I am from. Turner shares much the same build as Sparrow - narrow and lithe. It is well-suited to the shipboard life. Perhaps more so than my own inches." He frowned slightly. "I do not know if there are any of my acquaintance here. I was certainly brought here alone." He sighed and a hint of wry humour lightened his face. "I am half-expectng to find Sparrow somewhere, likely drinking himself insensible. It would be just my luck to be stranded with the most irritating man in existence."

He smiled again, a little more genuinely than before. "I arrived yesterday. It is a... strange place. I confess that I looked in many rooms before finding this one and I barely knew what to make of the objects within. The young lady who helped me was from the future and I believe this place may be as well. I confess I feel... somewhat out of place." And more than a little bereft without the sea and a ship to sail but that was something he was trying not to think of.

Legolas had been here long enough that James' reaction didn't surprise him. To be honest, there had been humans on his own world that hadn't believed elves existed anymore. So he didn't take offense to the comment, and in fact only sort of smiled wistfully about the whole thing. "Yes, Commodore. Elf." He raised his hand to his ear, tracing the shape of the point to illustrate what he was saying.

"How very strange." He shook his head, though, quickly becoming confused. "Please forgive me... on your worlds, even the birds are lithe and slender?" He frowned, not making a joke at all. He was honestly confused. "Are you saying, then, that both I and your friend Turner resemble sparrows?" The elf shook his head, really quite bewildered at this point.

"Yes, it is a strange land." He confirmed. "The first time I saw one of those magical screens with the people on them, I thought they had been trapped inside. Since then, though, I have learned much. Perhaps you will to?" The other man's words woke something up inside of him, and he reached for his shoulder and clapped his hand to it in a friendly, supportive manner. "Out of place... that rather sums it up nicely, indeed. I am a stranger in a strange land here, as well." He smiled at him encouragingly.

"Remarkable," James said, feeling a little astounded. "There are children's tales that talk of elves in my time but they look nothing like you." He smiled slightly. "I think I prefer elves like you to the ones in the tales."

He frowned for a moment then he realised the error Legolas had made and chuckled. "Jack Sparrow. He would insist on Captain as a preface to his name. He is a man. A very irritating man but slender and lithe much as you and Turner are."

He blinked at the mention of magical screens and wasn't entirely sure if he wanted to see one of them. Still he knew he was a curious man in some ways. He smiled at Legolas' words and the clap on his shoulder. The man... elf reminded him of some of the best of the noblemen he'd met before being posted to the Caribbean.

"I believe I have no choice," he said with a wry smile. "But I have never shied away from a challenge in the past and I see no reason to do so now. Have you been here long yourself?"

The blond prince knew of many elves that would be completely and totally offended by such a statement. Lord Elrond, for example, would have been fuming, as would many other elven nobles. But Legolas found that absolutely hilarious. The sound of his musical laughter filled the library. "Children's stories...?"

Of course, the hilarity wasn't helped by the mistake he'd made. He had no sooner started to get control of himself when he realized his error, and started all over again. There wasn't an ounce of meanness to the laughter, it's just that when something struck him as funny, he laughed. "Forgive me... but your people have such strange names. Jack Sparrow..."

Gradually, he calmed himself. In any normal library, there would have been employees on him by now for disturbing the quiet. With one last squeeze of the man's shoulder, he let his hand drop to his side once more.

"I hope you will not speak thusly of me. 'Very irritating elf' or something of the sort..." He smiled lightly. "I have been here nearly a month, I fear. Tell me of your world? It seems such a strange place from what little you have said of it."

James was surprised to find himself charmed by the elf's laughter. He didn't feel that he was being laughed at but as though he was being invited to share the joke. Turner was such a sombre, serious, intense boy that it was uncomfortably like being confronted with another version of himself... one with less regard for the law. But this elf with Turner's face was something far different and James found himself liking Legolas.

"I fear you would not find the descriptions of the elves in those tales flattering," he said with a smile. "Small, green, wrinkled things, they are... which you are..." He made as small gesture towards Legolas and looked him up and down. "... most definitely not."

He chuckled. "I would dearly like to see you say that to Sparrow. He'd probably puff out his chest like the bird in question and hop around in affronted fury." It was a delightful mental image though some small voice in the back of his head reminded him that Sparrow was not as bad as all that. The man had some principles under that pirate exterior or he would not have done what he'd done.

"I hardly think so. Sparrow irritated me from the moment I set eyes upon him, you have certainly not done that." The smile faded somewhat at Legolas' question, turning to one of wistful longing. "I am a sailor at heart, a man of the sea. As such, while I may be forced to spend time on dry land, it is the ocean and the ships that sail upon it that are my world. The sounds, the smells, the roll of the waves, even the storms and tempests and battles that are inevitable."

He gave a sudden, almost sheepish laugh. "Forgive me. I find the lack of ocean here makes me melancholy. My world? I hardly know how to describe it. I am an Englishman and as it stands, the British Empire spans an enormous portion of the world as we know it. I serve in the British Navy in Caribbean, keeping the Empire safe from its enemies and from the rogue pirate element." He thought for a moment. "England is a fine place. Green and lush, full of forests and meadows, town, villages and farms. But I have come to prefer the Caribbean. It is hot and punishing, full of strange peoples and events but it is a place where a man can make his mark if he wishes."

Well, that had gone better than it could have. Legolas was constantly being told that his irreverance was unseemly in a prince. He was sort of always putting people on guard with his laughter, so he was glad that this man didn't seem to mind. He smiled at him, and even playfully winked. All elves have a playful side, but in one as young as Legolas, it was more pronounced than in the elder of the race.

He wrinkled up his nose in amused distaste at the discription. "That sounds similar to the creater Gollum... I should not like to think that I look as he does." He looked down at himself as if reassuring himself he was still tall and elegant, and not small, wrinkled and ugly. "I do not believe I shall go to your world." He spoke with a tone of deciseiveness. He didn't want to become like the elves in the stories that James was talking about.

"If this Sparrow was here, I would say it to him." He laughed softly. "I am told that is my greatest failing, this desire to simply say what I think at all times. Inconvienant, I suppose, but amusing."

But all kidding was put aside as he listened to James' explanation. His eyes became a little misty as he heard what he had to say. He had already liked James, but now he was starting to think he was talking to the most fortunate man in the world. Or he had been, before he'd been taken. How sad for him, to be so close to the ocean and to have that taken away. "You are most fortunate, Commodore, and most unfortunate as well. The sea..." His voice was wistful.

"Elves wait their whole lives to go to the sea." He barely knew he was talking, and his voice had taken on an almost dreamlike tone. "There is much to do in Middle Earth, so we put off the journey as long as we can. But in the life of every elf, we must leave Middle Earth and go to the shores, where we take the boat to Valinor. It is inevitable. But I, I had never seen the sea..." But some of the longing for it that each elf felt was clear in his voice. "There is sometimes a sea here, however. It is not always a frozen land, as it is now. Take heart."

"Gollum?" James asked curiously. "What manner of creature is a gollum?" He wondered if Legolas perhaps meant golem. He remembered being told of such things by sailors from the East. Actually now that he thought about it, golem could well fit those strange 'goblins' as Miss George had called them.

He chuckled. "I envy you that ability but I think only kings and princes and perhaps the poorest of people have the freedom to say what they think. The rest of us must watch our words or risk the consequences of an ill-thought remark."

He smiled momentarily when Legolas said he envied him then he was caught by the dreamy description of the elven ocean voyage. It sounded strange to him; what seemed to be a one way journey but perhaps that was just how things were done in this Middle Earth. And yet, Legolas' words, the longing that was plain in them made his breath catch slightly. "Is it always so?" he asked quietly. "Do none stay in Middle Earth?"

He gave a small sigh of relief. So there was a chance that he might see the ocean again and surely this place would give him the ship he desired. "I can only hope. I have loved the sea since the first day I saw the ships that sail upon her. Indeed I spent nearly all of my teen years on board one ship or another, barely setting foot on land." He frowned as something Legolas had said tweaked in his mind. "You make it sound as though the very land around this place changes," he said with a curious look.

"A strange, twisted little creature." He thought back to what he knew of the being. "He was once different, but now he is deformed and evil. He is quick, sly, and stronger than he would appear. He sounds much more like the elves in your stories."

He smiled slightly. "Not with me, my friend. I prefer it when people are honest with me. And, after all..." He reached out and touched the top of the man's ear to make his point. "You are not one of my subjects, is it not so? So it is my wish that you would be honest and say whatever is on your mind."

The elf sighed softly. "Some fight the call of the sea for many centuries, but in the end, we all give in. It is why there will soon be no elves left on Middle Earth. It shall be left to the humans, as the Valar intend." He smiled sadly. "It would be a hard thing indeed to leave Mirkwood, but Valinor is said to be fairer by far." Still, it was clear that he would have been sad to leave either way.

His smile turned less sad, though, when he saw the hope that sprung into the human's eyes. "Yes, my friend. You shall see the ocean once more. I am glad for you." But suddenly he frowned. "Yes, of course that is the case. Mirage is a strange land. Every so many days, the area changes. Right now, it is a snowy landscape. It has looked many different ways in the time I have been here."

James nodded slowly. "He does indeed. Though if I recall, the elves in those stories ranged from being as evil as this gollum to being merely... mischievous. Or to being somewhat akin to capricious gods. It largely depended on the storyteller and the country of origin." He chuckled. "But it has been many years since I have read such tales."

He was surprised and pleased at the offer made by Legolas and though part of him did wonder how legitimate it was, the elf did seem to be genuine. James had met few men in his life who were willing to face such honesty. Most preferred the social white lies. He was surprised at the touch too. While men at sea did not hesitate to grab hold of each other for safety and security, it was unusual when he was on land. And yet, he did not find it objectionable. "Thank you," he said with a small bow. "I will do my best."

"Sometimes the unknown can be far better than one could ever have expected," he said with a reminiscent air. "I was apprehensive at leaving Britain for the Caribbean. It seemed so far from home and full of strange sounding names and places and people. But I have found it to be a fine place and would be loathe to leave." In fact he had given some thought to the idea of retiring to the Caribbean when his time in the Navy was finally over. Perhaps by that time he would have risen to the rank of Admiral and a retired Admiral would be an excellent candidate for a Governor.

"I am glad," he said then smiled. "Perhaps when that day comes, you will join me on whatever ship this place chooses to provide and we can see what there is to see of the oceans of this planet." He frowned thoughtfully. It seemed so strange but then he had been brought here but some strange force, was it that odd that such a powerful force would also be able to change the very terrain? He shook his head and chuckled. "There are many from my home who would call all of this the basest of witchcraft but I have seen enough in recent times to know that there are many things in this life that cannot be explained in any normal terms."

The blond prince laughed a little. "I am mischievious, but not evil. Or so I believe. So they are only half right." He glanced down at his trim, athletic form. "As you can likely see for yourself, I am no small, twisted thing. It would seem these stories leave something to be desired to be realistic." It amused him more than anything, really. And was fascinating, of course.

Instinctively, he returned the bow. "There is no need to thank me. Indeed, I would thank you for doing so." He smiled playfully, and lowered his hand from James' shoulder. In Middle Earth, this sort of friendly touching between men was much more common than in some others, and he didn't think anything of it.

"It is true. I had not often been out of my father's lands, but it was exciting to go forth to Rivendell, and onward. The quest was full of danger, but also full of adventure and friendship. I would not wish to have turned it down." A jolt of pain went through him as he thought of his friends, most especially Aragorn, but it was covered by an easy smile. That was over, and his best friend and lover was gone. "It is good to be torn from the familiar at times, is it not?"

His eyes lit up, and once more an expression almost of awe came over his face. "I could... go on a ship?" He thought about that for a long time. In his world, the only time he would set foot on a ship was to go to Valinor. It took him a few minutes to wrap his head around the fact that he could do it here with no negative effects, and no need to leave behind the friends he'd made. "If that is a serious offer, Commodore, I would not hesitate to accept. In fact, Wargs could not even keep me from doing as you offer."

James laughed. "Mischievous but not evil is something I believe I can like." It would make a change from Sparrow who tended towards Mischievous and self-serving. Perhaps evil. It was hard to tell sometimes with Sparrow. He looked Legolas up and down. "Indeed you are not. Perhaps the writers of the tales should come here so that they could write of elves properly."

He eyed the elf curiously. He thought he saw something in the elf's expression but he had never been the best judge of human expressions, let alone elven. "You were on a quest? Had it been completed before you were brought here?" He considered the question for a moment. "Perhaps. I suppose it depends on where one is taken. This place seems pleasant enough but I was recently confronted with unfamiliar things in a most unpleasant manner."

He smiled at the elf's look of awe. "It is indeed a serious offer, presuming that this place will indeed provide one when we return to the sea. In fact if you wished to learn the rudiments of sailing then even a lake and a small skiff would do."

"Or perhaps I should take them to Mirkwood. Or perhaps to the fair Golden Wood, Lothlorien. There, they would see wonders so great that they could never think of elves the same way again." He smiled, liking that idea. Challenging the perceptions of others was an amusement for him, and especially where he or his culture were involved.

A smile lit up his features. "It is so, my friend. I was on a quest." And despite the hardship and the horrors he went through, he didn't see it as a bad thing. It had been terrible and wonderful, thrilling and scary, all at the same time. "The quest was not completed. The ring had not been destroyed when I was taken. I can but hope it has been now." He turned dark, thoughtful eyes to the human. "That is most unfortunate. Are you sad, then, despite this, that you were taken away?"

It was amazing how fast his expression changed, however, when he learned that it was a serious offer. He somehow conveyed the joy of jumping up and down, clapping his hands, while not doing anything so undigified, and simply standing still. "I will accept your offer gladly, then. It would be a pleasure indeed to ride upon the waves. My friend Marcus and I swam with the dolphins, but I have been on no boat or other seacraft."

James actually laughed at that, liking the idea immensely. "Indeed. And perhaps they would craft better tales, having seen such wonders."

"Ah, I am sorry you do not know how this quest has finished. I too hope it has been successful," he said with genuine sympathy. He had always been one to see a task through to its completion and being dragged away with such a thing incomplete would irk him terribly. "Actually, no, for my task was not yet complete. The worst of it was over. Barbossa dead, his crew captured, the curse on them removed but Sparrow still remains at large. I had given him one day's grace for services rendered but his day's grace was up and I was on the verge of setting sail when I was brought here."

He smiled and chuckled at the elf's enthusiatic reaction. It reminded him of his own when his father had acceded to his request to go to sea. "I think you will find it easy enough. You seem graceful in your movements, sure and steady. Those are important things on a ship, especially when the seas are rough."

"I should craft tales of them, just to show them how it feels." The elf spoke with an easy grin, however, that said he really didn't take all of this too seriously. "They shall all be winged, and be the shade of violets. As well, I believe they shall have horns." He pictured this in his head and chuckled. "And that is what I have to say about those who tell stories of elves as anything but what I am."

"So you sought Sparrow, then, my friend?" His eyes widened, and sparkled slightly. Being a skilled tracker, he very much enjoyed the hunt and approved of such things. "Very sporting, to give him a chance to make himself scarce. Very sporting indeed." Approval was clear in his voice. He enjoyed that sort of thing immensely. "I imagine you would have caught him, as well. How could you not?" He barely knew the human, and already had a high opinion of him.

"I shall be graceful, then, and as steady as you wish." He really could barely hide his contentment, and wanted more than anything to rush out and get into a boat now. It wouldn't work so well, however, considering that everything outside was snow and ice. "Soon, I hope."

James laughed at that fanciful description of the story tellers. "It would indeed serve them right though in their defence, I doubt any of them have ever met an elf, either of the type they describe or one like you." He raised his eyebrows. "Perhaps I should turn my hand to writing tales of elves when I get back so that a true and proper description might be given."

"I had intended to," he said ruefully. "Indeed I was just stepping into my office to complete preparations so that I could board my ship and begin the chase when I found myself here." He raised his chin, a determined and intent expression growing on his face. "But yes, I would have caught him. He is a fine sailor with a fine ship but I would still back the Dauntless against the Black Pearl." His eyes narrowed and regret and annoyance flickered across his face. "And I owe him for the loss of my beautiful Interceptor."

He paused for a moment and laughed. "It has been too long since I taught anyone the rudimentaries of sailing. I have captain for too long, I think. It will be a good thing to get back to such basics as climbing the rigging and working the sheets." he would have to rethink his attire if he did that too. Go back to the simple breeches and shirt that he'd worn as a youth. Perhaps even forgo the shoes. He'd done that more than once, many sailors did once they were out of port since it was easier to climb the rigging without them.

"If that is indeed the case, my dear Commodore, it would seem we are fated to spend much time together." The elf laughed playfully. "For how else are you to learn all that you would need to know about elves, other than by spending time with one?" He really was a mischievious being, and pretty much radiated good cheer.

"My friend, the hour grows late." In fact, by what his stomach told him, he and his new friend had been chatting for quite awhile. "I find myself hungering. I believe I shall leave you now." He bowed politely to the human.

"May the Valar smile on you, Commodore, until we meet again." With the formal leavetaking words said, he flashed a bright smile once more. "It had best be soon, however! I am eager to learn all about this boating. I have been in a canoe, but never in ship with sails."
