Who: Sam and Dean
When: Day 27
What: Talking and catching up
Rating: PG-13 to be safe
Status: Complete

Sam led the way back to his room, continually looking back to make sure Dean was following him. He'd gone to the party to met people and he'd ended up meeting his brother. This planet was weird.

Even weirder that his room had been right next to Dean's all this time without his knowledge and he had never seen his brother before today.

Sam opened the door and waved Dean in. His room looked like his old bedroom at their house in Lawrence. At first, it had bugged Sam but he'd gradually come to accept it. "Go on, sit down." He pointed to the desk that had a laptop which was a replica of the one he had had back home. Sam sat himself on the bed, clutching his hands together, unsure of what to say first. I'm psychic? Dad's dead? So's my girlfriend?

He chose to speak about none of the above first. "... You do know that the people who come here don't always come from the same point in time, right? Because I'm - dude this is so weird to say - farther along in time than you are. I haven't been at Stanford for a few years because I've been hunting with you."

Dean followed Sam dutifully to his room and dropped unceremoniously into the chair at the desk with the laptop. He eyed the computer and considered making a remark about porn addictions until he noticed that the room was a fairly exact replica of Sam's old room. Nice of the planet to make Sam all comfy and cozy, he thought.

Sam was talking though so he tuned in to his brother and then rolled his eyes. He snorted, "You hunting with me?" He shook his head and leaned forward. "First, I work alone. Lone wolf, lone ranger, you know what I'm saying, Sammy? And second, you hunting? Is that a joke?"

He cleared his throat and did an insultingly girlish impression of Sam on the day Sam left for Stanford, "You skipped your own chance at real education to waste your life following in Dad's footsteps. Remember, Mom died because of what Dad was into..."

His voice faltered toward the end as the frustration he'd felt that day hit him in a sudden unexpected wave. He coughed and turned his gaze to the computer again, speaking off-handedly now, "Like I said before, you've been into the drugs in the dorm, haven't you? Dad would be disappointed."

"Shut up," Sam snapped, getting more and more angry. "Just shut up, damnit Dean, I'm serious." He got to his feet and started pacing back and forth. "I'm not lying and I don't do drugs, you idiot. And Dad? Dad's dead. I might as well as just get all this crap out and tell you I'm psychic too."

Sam flicked a glance at Dean but barreled on. He'd just say everything now and whatever Dean thought of it, well... He hoped he would believe him. "Dad left on a hunt and didn't come back so you came to Stanford to get my help. We finished the job and when I got back, Jess, my girlfriend, had been killed the exact same way Mom had. Pinned to the ceiling, bursting in flames. Dad was on the trail of the demon that got her and mom. We eventually found him and we tracked down this gun made by Samuel Colt that could kill demons, then went after the demon. It almost killed us. You almost died, Dean. When we were in the hospital, your heart stopped. You almost died. And then Dad -" Sam cut himself for a moment, deciding it wouldn't be a good thing to tell Dean that their father had died saving his life. "Dad got killed by the demon, I'm pretty sure.

"And I'm psychic. I get these visions of people dying. They first started out as nightmares that came true but then I started having them while I was awake. It turns out there are other kids like me, other physics. Andy, that guy at the party? He's someone we helped out. He's like me. We both got taken by the demon to Cold Oaks where he had us fight against other psychic people to death. I was the only one who survived besides another guy named Jake but he ended up trying to kill me too. And I found out..." Sam paused, trailing off as he sank back down on the bed.

"Fuck, Dean, I found out that the reason I'm like this is because the night that Mom died, the demon was in my room and dripped his blood into my mouth. I've got demon blood in me, Dean, and there's no telling what that means, if I'm going to go batshit crazy and start killing people or what so I really really need you to believe me. Please." Sam was surprised to find that he was actually shaking slightly. This was the first time he'd talked about what he'd seen at Cold Oaks.

"I don't know what I have to do to get you to believe me but I swear to god, I'm telling the truth." He wanted the Dean he knew to be there with him, to tell him that he wasn't a killer and that he never would be, because even though Sam didn't completely believe Dean when he said that, it made him feel a little less freaked out.

"Dad? Dad's dead?" Dean's tone was beyond incredulous. "I talked to Dad like 2 days before I ended up on this damned planet. He..." But Sam's voice was so serious that Dean stopped, biting his words off with a sudden fear that maybe his brother wasn't talking nonsense after all.

He knew this place was probably the construction of some sort of demon trying to stop him and now, apparently Sam if Sam really was hunting. That, at least, made sense. Why else would Sam suddenly show up here if it wasn't because a demon was feeling threatened?

Dean got to his feet and paced a few steps silently. His mind wasn't bending easily around the whole idea of Sam having demon blood in him or being psychic but if he accepted that Sam was from further in the future than he was he had to a accept the rest of it. Still, Sam hunting sounded like such a foreign idea that he wasn't sure he could even picture it. He and Sam? Side by side with shotguns blazing, wasting demons and staking vampire nests? He choked down a chuckle.

After a long moment he glanced at Sam. "So you're telling me that Mom died because some demon wanted to bleed into your mouth and make you psychic? And you're telling me that I almost died but Dad died instead? Was... was that my fault?"

He shook his head again. "No, I don't want to know. You're telling me that there's 2 years I don't know about and a lot of shit went down." It was almost too much for him to accept so he slid right into his usual routine of deflecting with a joke. "Am I a superhero in the future or something? Level with me, Sammy. I can take it. Am I the Wolf Man?"

Sam let out a dry laugh, glancing away for a moment. "Mom was in the wrong place at the wrong time. That's why she died. It's probably my fault. If I..." Sam kept back the comment he was going to say. "He killed Jess to get me to go on the road."

When Dean asked if he was a superhero, Sam laughed again, although this time it had more humor. "The Wolf Man? No, but we did run in to one. Actually, it was a girl." Thinking of Madison, Sam quickly change the subject. "Yeah, you're a hero," he admitted, softly and seriously. "You've said a lot of lives, including mine." Thinking for a moment, Sam added on, "And Cassie's." He wondered if Dean had known Cassie yet or not. This was one way to find out.

"Cassie?" Dean swallowed and looked away again. That pain was way too fresh. "I see her again, hm?" He laughed but it was an empty laugh. It had only been a few days since he'd been sitting in a hotel room, bottle of tequila in his hand, watching the sun rise with blank eyes as his mind reeled from her cold rejection.

He was at a loss to speak. This was a lot to absorb and he had the feeling that if he didn't stay mostly serious, Sam was liable to rip into him. He wasn't up for all of that. So he sighed and sat down on the bed next to his brother.

"So things are sort of highway to hell, aren't they? I'm sorry to hear about Jess, man. Maybe if we get out of this place I can somehow drag you back to my timeline and..." He let it trail off, rubbing his eyes.

So he had met Cassie. "If it helps any, she doesn't think your crazy anymore. She believes you," he offered, noting the way Dean's laugh wasn't filled with any humor. "We got rid of a possessed truck that was trying to kill her. It's... a long story. But she's okay."

Dean sat down next to him and Sam focused on his brother. "I've dealt with it," he said in response to Dean apologizing about Jess, even though her death was still hard on him. "It was more than a year ago. But... what the hell do we do now? I mean, things aren't bad here, they're a helluva lot better than how things are back home but still, it's... it's not our life, you know? It's not right."

Dean grumbled, "Now she believes me. 2 years later." Then he brightened a little. "I must've loved proving to her I wasn't crazy and getting the last word. I hope I told her off. Made it hurt," he said sadistically.

He smiled at the thought for a moment.

"Yeah, what the hell do we do now? It's definitely not our life and it's not right because there are a lot things out there that need to be killed. Lives to be saved. If Dad really is dead, who's out there fighting? What about Bobby? That old sonofabitch better not show up here. They need him with us gone."

Shaking his head amusedly at the idea of Bobby here in this place trying to find something to do with himself. He sighed and came back to reality. "I've been all around this place a hundred times. There's no way past the perimeter and no one ever seems to come forward as the mastermind behind it. But there has to be one. We have to find it, Sam, and get out of here."

Sam smiled and shook his head in amusement at his brother. "You guys parted on good terms. I think." As far as he could tell, they had.

"Bobby's still alive and kicking. I don't suppose you know Ellen Harvelle. She's sort of an old friend of Dad's, helps us with information sometimes. We're not the only hunters but still... you're right, we need to get back. I'm still not completely buying that the planet itself is sentient. There's some weird stuff going on, I'll admit, but... yeah."

"Parted on good terms? I must go soft over the next 2 years... Damn." He sighed and looked out the window at the falling snow outside.

"Yeah, I know of Ellen Harvelle. Dad mentioned her a couple times as someone I could go to if I needed something and he couldn't back me up. Never met her though."

He glanced at his brother. The realization that at some point Sam had really gotten into the game and begun hunting with him was finally beginning to settle in his brain. Somewhere along the line, they'd buried the hatchet. Something he'd never expected to happen. It seemed a little unreal but he specialized in the unreal. He'd roll with this.

"So. You and me. In your time, we're what? Friends?"

"She's been a great help ever since Dad..." Sam trailed off, talking about Ellen. "Her husband and Dad, I think, were friends, but he died on a hunt years ago."

Sam paused at Dean's last question, mulling it over in his head for a moment. He remembered something Dean had once told him. "We were brothers," he said quietly. "Are brothers. If I could go back and change things, I'm not sure what I would have done differently or if I even would have, but... I don't know. You're all I've got, Dean. You're my brother."

He reached up and scratched the back of his head awkwardly, looking down and waiting for Dean to make some crack about chick flicks or something.

Dean remembered Dad mentioning a buddy of his dying on the hunt a few years ago but that wasn't really something he wanted to talk about right now considering Dad was apparently dead in Sam's timeline. Something he also didn't want to think about.

"I'm all you've got?" That was an odd thought to wrap his mind around. He was usually all he had. He was usually alone, except when he and Cassie had... but that was yet another thing he didn't want to think about. Damn, this whole thing was dredging up a bunch of crap he wanted far away from his mind. It made him feel extremely restless so he stood up to go look out the window.

Almost as an afterthought, peering out at the snow, he said, "That's going to take some getting used to."

Sam let out a heavy sigh. The truth was right in front of him. This Dean was different than the Dean he knew. He couldn't just expect them to fall back into their usual pattern. They'd have to start over again and Sam wasn't sure how that would progress with them not needing to hunt anything here.

Sam rose to his feet. "Look, dude, if you want me to leave..." he offered, unsure of what was going through his brother's head. "I mean, I'm not going anywhere so if you need some space... I'm right across the hall from you so you would know where to find me..."

Dean laughed and looked back at his brother. "You're offering to leave your own room for me? Things definitely have changed between us, haven't they?" He wasn't sure what Sam was expecting but it was a good thing to have an ally. Especially someone who knew the score where their family was concerned. He could get used to this. He would get used to it. And then they could blow this popsicle stand and get back to kicking ass.

"Look, Sammy, there is not going to be any tearful reunion here. Chick flick scenes aren't my style, if you remember. But it's good to see you and good to know we get our act together at some point. I think this might call for a beer or something in celebration. What do you say?"

Sam blinked, then laughed, verbally smacking himself in the head. "Right, yeah." He'd been so wrapped up in the conversation he'd forgotten that they were in his room.

He held his hands up in surrender. "Dude, not a problem. Some things never change," he said with a grin. "Alright, sure. There's a bar here. Want to go there? They give you anything you want. Ever try it?"

Dean chuckled and shook his head. "No, I've been too busy trying to find a way out of this place to try much of anything around here. I think I can take a breather and have a few brews with my kid brother."

He ruffled Sam's hair, teasingly baiting him before fast-walking to the door. Over his shoulder he said, "Move it, lazy bones. I want to hear about all the ass we kicked together!"
