-Status: Complete - Dropped
-Rating: Eeeeer, PG, PG-13-ish?

This new world Al had followed Ed into wasn't so different from his own. Some things that were different were fascinating and some were also frightening. That didn't matter though. As long as Al was with his brother, he knew they could get through anything.

They'd moved to a different city, outside of Germany, since the incident with the Gate. Ed told him that things were going to get worse. They were still searching for the bomb that had been brought over from there world, although they had destroyed the Gate with help from Hughes, Hughes' allies, and a lot of explosives.

Alchemy didn't work on this side of the gate and Al had to admit, he missed being able to use it. It helped to make life a bit easier... and also was useful for protecting oneself. Luckily, they hadn't run into much trouble... yet.

Al was in the makeshift study, looking over papers with his brother when it happened. He turned to Ed to ask him a question about something when suddenly the ground just... opened up underneath him. There was nothing but blackness.

Al's eyes went wide with panic and he scrambled forward to grab on to something, to stop his fall, but the black hole continue to grow until he fell into it. "Brother!" he cried out, reaching up with a hand in the hopes that Ed would grab it and pull him up.

But Ed didn't. Al practically went numb. Ed had to have seen him fall. Why didn't he try and stop him from falling?!

Abruptly, the scenery changed and Al plopped down onto some sort of... of slide. At first, he was too shocked to do anything except continue to slip down it but then he got his head around him and started to yell. The slide wasn't that big. Maybe he could stop himself...

He'd gone through some sort of portal. Had he somehow been taken back to their world? Was he back in Amestris? But he should have come out at the lost city, not here... where ever here was.

It was either try to use alchemy or just continue sliding. Al didn't know what he would make a transmutation circle on and he didn't have his gloves with him... He remembered his memories and remembered the Gate... Maybe he could do it like Ed did...

Clapping his hands together, Al focused and slapped his hands against the side of the slide. Blue light crackled through the air as a short but thick pole shot out and Al just barely managed to grab onto it before he went past it. He jerked to a stop.

Al didn't move for a moment. He could use alchemy. Not only that, but he didn't need a transmutation circle to do it anymore. Carefully, Al rolled over the side of the side and landed on the snowy ground. He wrapped his arms around himself, shivering from the cold. He was glad he could feel the cold, remembering when he was in the suit of armor and couldn't feel anything at all. Looking down, Al saw that he had been almost to the end of the slide anyway. Turning, he looked up at the top of it. It was pretty big for a slide. Must be used for something.

Looking around, he saw some buildings nearby. If he was back in Amestris, there was only one way to find out, and that was by asking someone.

Tonks was pleased with herself, there was no other way to put it. She'd taken a chance on telling Marcus about how she felt, and it had worked out very well for her. He loved her too. They'd spent the whole night simply holding each other and talking, and it was literally the most amazing time she'd ever spent.

Sometimes, she had to pinch herself to try to make herself believe this was real. It was for this reason that she headed out, thinking she would hit the slopes. She didn't really know how to work the muggle inventions called skis, but she would figure it out. It sounded fun, anyway.

That didn't exactly go as planned, though, because as she was heading through the lobby, the golem manning the counter waved her over. It pointed, and she sighed softly. The light on top of a box on the counter was blinking. She had been around long enough to know what that meant.

Well, it was either take the key or let some poor bugger freeze out there. She shrugged and collected the key, slipping it in her pocket. She'd wanted to go out anyway, right? Pausing to cast a quick warmth charm on herself, she headed out. Not for the first time, she wished that the key had some sort of homing mechanism. Still, she would find this person eventually. The grounds weren't that large.

As an extra precaution, though, she flicked her wand every couple of yards, sending red sparks shooting up. Hopefully that would get the attention of the person she was here to find.

After Al had gotten a bit closer to the buildings, he saw some red sparks shooting up into the air. Hope filled him. Maybe it was General Mustang using his fire alchemy! Excited, Al quickened his pace through the snow. Maybe someone had seen him arrive and was trying to find him.

Al trudged on, using the red sparks as a guide until he saw the person who was making them. "Hey!" he called out, slowing down as he neared the person. "Over here!" As he got closer, he saw that it wasn't the General at all. She weren't wearing a State Military outfit and she was a girl. "Uh. Hey," he greeted when he'd caught up with her. "I'm Alphonse Elric. Do you know where I am??"

Tonks was very pleased with herself when someone walked toward her, obviously trying to get her attention. It wasn't anyone she'd seen before, and it was a good bet in her mind that this was the person she'd been trying to find. She tucked her wand safely in the back pocket of her jeans and waved enthusiastically.

"Hey, over here!" Apparently her waving was a bit too enthusiastic, because she actually managed to dump herself entirely over into the snow. Being who she was, and very used to this, she was on her feet again in second.

"Wotcher, Alphonse! I'm Tonks." She offered her hand for him to shake, because she knew that was the appropriate muggle thing to do. "Yeah, I'm afraid I do, but this is gonna take some explaining. Maybe we should go inside?"

Al shook her hand politely but couldn't stop the barrel of questions pouring out of his mouth. "Were you using alchemy? Am I in Amestris? Did you see me arrive? Has anyone else showed up here who has blond hair, amber eyes, and an automail arm and leg?" Al looked at her with wide, hopeful eyes. Please tell me Ed's here, he begged her silently. As an afterthought since he'd just seen her take a tumble into the snow, he asked, "Are you okay?"

Tonks almost laughed, but stopped herself at the last second. It would be horribly rude, and she still remembered a month ago when she'd come here, how confused she'd been. This guy did not need her laughing at him. It was just that the barrage of questions out of his mouth reminded her a lot of herself.

"Alchemy? Like the Philosopher's Stone? Nah, I only know one guy who can do that." She frowned thoughtfully. "You're not in Amestris or whatever, I mean, I wish I could say differently. No, I didn't see you arrive, I was sent to find you. Dunno if this blond bloke is here or not, haven't seen anyone like that."

And then, because her curiousity would get the best of her, she had to ask "What's automail?" He was looking at her so oddly, like he wanted something and she had no idea what to give to him. "Yeah, I'm fine. Come on, let's go inside."

Al's excitement grew. "You know an alchemist?! Is he with the State Military?!" Maybe she knew General Mustang. He was fairly well known. But then she said he wasn't in Amestris. His face fell even further when she said she hadn't seen anyone who looked like Ed arrive.

"Oh," he said quietly. "Uhm, automail's... Automail is, uh..." Al cast about for the words to explain what automail was. "It's sort of a fake thing made out of metal and usually is made into limbs for people who don't have them. My brother lost his left leg and right arm, so he's got an automail leg and arm so he can still use them. The nerves are connected to it so he can still move it around on his own. You've never heard of it?"

When she suggested they go inside, Al nodded. He was pretty cold out here. Al cast a look over his shoulder, as if he expected to see Ed coming up behind him. But he wasn't. Had they been separated again?

Tonks laughed. "No, course I didn't know him. He was about a million years old. Only Dumbledore knew him before he..." But that was a bit depressing, so she didn't go into it. His supply of the Elixir of life that he'd gotten from the Philsopher's Stone before it was destroyed had to be just about gone by now.

"Oh." She thought about that for a few moments. "But why not just grow the limbs back?" Sure, magic probably could do what the boy was describing, but she didn't see the point to that. Who wanted fake limbs when you could have your own back?

She shrugged it off as she led the way towards the main building. Once they were there, with her, of course, tripping every few steps or so, she pushed open the door and stumbled inside. She stomped hard on the floor to get all the snow off her shoes, and then turned to the boy once more.

"Oh, before I forget..." She dug into her pocket and pulled out the key she had found earlier in the day. "This is for your room, the number is on the top. The plaque is this way, so let's go."

"Oh," Al repeated. "A million years old...?" He was confused. The only person he knew that were really old alchemists had been Dante and his father, but they were both dead. Ed had told him. Maybe she just meant that he was an elderly person... "Uh, what was his name?"

Following after her, Al got even more confused. Grow limbs back? You couldn't just grow your limbs back. That would take magic. "Nobody's been able to do it before," he finally answered. "How can they? They're gone. Do you know of a way that they can?" he asked, slightly hopeful. "Are you an alchemist too?"

By the time they got to the door, Al noted that the girl was a bit on the clumsy side. He tried not to chuckle in good hearted amusement when she stumbled every so often. If she went face first into the snow again, he'd feel bad for thinking it was sort of funny.

When they got inside, Al brushed the snow off his clothes and copied her stomping to get the snow off his own shoes, glad to be back in a warm place. He took the key when she handed it to him. "My room? I'm supposed to stay here? What plaque?"

"Nicholas Flamel. And he wasn't really a million, he was 666 years old. But that's all because of the Philosophers Stone." She shook her head so the snow flew out of her pink hair, and then took a strand between her fingers. "I think I'm bored of this color, let's try something new..."

The snowy landscape had given her some inspiration, and she concentrated briefly. The pink color drained out of her hair to be replaced by a light blue, shot through with silver. "There, that's better."

She turned and looked at him as if he'd grown another head. "Well, yeah, of course it would take magic. How else would you do it?" She was constantly forgetting the whole limitations of non-magic folks. "Nah, I'm a witch, not an alchemist. What about you?"

She turned toward the large room that had the plaque on a dias in the center and pointed. "Read that. I'll wait, and if you have questions, you can ask." She showed a competance with this whole situation that might suggest she'd done this before.

"How did he use the Stone to live that long?" Al questioned, wondering how this Nicholas Flamel was able to accomplish that. "Did he stay in the same body all that time?"

When Tonks changed her hair color, Al actually stopped and gaped. "H-h-how did you do that without clapping your hands?!" he asked in shock. "You didn't even use a transmutation circle! Have you seen the Gate too?!" That would mean that Tonks had attempted human transmutation... Was there a homunculus somewhere in this place?! "A witch?" Al asked, thoroughly confused and a bit freaked out now. "I don't understand. I don't understand any of this. I just want to go back home. I want to go back to my brother," he begged desperately, not even bothering to go look at the plaque.

"Well, before it was destroyed..." She was a bit leery at first of revealing this, but then, it had been destroyed. It wasn't like anyone here could get their hands on it, anyway, even if it hadn't been. So why keep it a secret? But old habits die hard. "It had the power to create an elixir that could make whoever drank it live forever. It also turned any metal into gold, not a bad little toy to have around, yeah?"

She turned and looked at him looking at her, and wondered what that was all about. Then, she remembered that she'd changed the color of her hair. She had to stop doing that when people who didn't know about her powers could see, at least without warning them. "I dunno what this circle thing is that you're talking about. I'm a witch, I do magic with my wand." She pulled it out of her back pocket, shot off some red sparks to demonstrate. "Except for my body, which I can change naturally. Most people can't, even witches and wizards." She quickly changed her nose into a pig's snout, then into a long beak, also demonstrating.

"Look, you really do need to go read that plaque or this isn't going to make any sense to you." She paused. "It might not anyway, but at least it's a place to start from."

"An elixir?" That was the first time Al heard anything like that. "An elixir that made you live forever? You mean like the red water? But the red water's toxic... And why would you need the stone to turn something into gold? Any alchemist can do that. I can do that."

Tonks explained she was a witch, pulling out her wand and making sparks with it. Al looked at the wand in a mixture of apprehension and wonder. A little stick that you could use to do magic? But wasn't magic the same as alchemy? That was what the people had called it on the other side of the Gate...

He was about to explain that one needed a transmutation circle to use alchemy when she changed her nose multiple times. Al's eyes widened in fear and he took a few steps backwards. "G-get away!" he commanded shakily. "Stay back! A-are you a homunculus?!" He held his hands up, palms facing together, looking around for something he could transmute and use as a shield or weapon if need be. The only person he had ever seen that had been able to do what this woman was doing was Envy and Envy had killed his brother. Was that how she had been able to change her hair color?

It occured to Tonks that she was confusing the situation, and she let her face lapse back into it's normal shape. She didn't know exactly what she'd done, but the kind-hearted girl did know enough to know that she had scared him. She sighed and felt a desire to reach out to him, maybe touch his shoulder. He'd probably jump out of his skin if she did, though.

"I dunno even what that is...look, you really do need to read that plaque, and it would be better if I was here after to explain. If you want me to go, I will, of course. Seriously, though... I'm just trying to help. There's things that aren't going to make a bit of sense until you know some stuff."

It would be better, maybe, for her to have gone into it verbally before showing him the plaque. Oh well. People had attacked her physically, been very rude to her, and there were an odd few who had just been really sweet. This wasn't so far out of the ordinary. Attempting to be patient, she waited as he made his decision.

Al kept on eye on her, carefully lowering his hands. Not all homunculi were bad... Lust, in the end, had helped them and Wrath had showed him how to open the Gate and get his brother back. "Okay," he said, deciding to go take a look.

He made his way over to the plaque, reading it but watching Tonks out of the corner of his eye in case she made a move towards him. "I won't be able to leave...?" he murmured aloud as he read. Like hell he was going to just stay here. Al clenched his hands into fists. He'd found a way to get to his brother before, he'd do it again. Ed was alive somewhere and Al wouldn't stop until he got back to him.

He turned back to Tonks and slowly made his way back to her. She didn't seem like she was going to hurt him... "I'm really in a different world again, aren't I?" he asked, having calmed down a bit. "Is this your world?"

She watched as he read the plaque, glad that he at least had gone that far. Too many people had called her insane after she'd explained things to them, she found that them looking at the plaque first helped a lot. Most of the time. The whole thing with greeting people is that you really have to play it by ear.

While he read, she tried to lean casually against the wall nearby. Only, as per usual Tonks fashion, she missed the wall and crumbled to the ground. Typically, she was back on her feet as if nothing had happened within a couple of seconds. She'd been listening to him speak, and was nodding as he turned back around.

"That's the spirit. I mean, I've been kidnapped before. This Planet can't hold me here forever. I have to go back and help defeat the Dark Lord." She sighed softly. "Yeah, you are, I'm sorry to say. And no, it's not my world. I was brought here nearly a month ago, and my..." She paused before continuing "Friend Marcus and I have been trying to leave ever since."

"The Dark Lord? Sounds pretty big," Al noted. He let out a sigh, looking at the ground for a moment. How many different worlds were there?! Had he somehow gone across the Gate again? But he hadn't used anything to open it. How he got here still didn't make sense to him but he was beginning to believe that Tonks was telling the truth.

"I'm sorry," he apologized. "I guess I overreacted." Smiling awkwardly, he reached up and rubbed the back of his head. "If we're from different worlds, then things are bound to be different between us. You said you're a witch? What does that mean? Is your friend one as well?" Al also found it interesting that there was a Philosopher's Stone in her world too, only it seemed to have a different purpose. Al wondered if it was made differently... He hoped so, and decided to ask. "Uhm, do you know how that alchemist made the Philosopher's Stone? Are there more alchemists in your world?"

Tonks nodded, pleased by this recognition. "Yeah, it's absolutely insane, really. For the longest time, they were all acting like ostriches with their heads in the sands, the Ministry I mean." She was becomming more comfortable, chattering away as she normally did.

"It was ridiculous, because anyone could see what was happening, but they wouldn't. Because they didn't want to, I guess." She looked at the boy, her dark eyes thoughtful. In truth, she could understand his reaction. Hers hadn't been much better.

"Aw, it's alright. I didn't take offense." It was very hard to offend the bright-haired witch, actually, and she hadn't known most of the words he'd been throwing at her anyway. "You should have seen me when I was brought here. I tried to attack this warrior-woman... Oh. Marcus? No, he's not a witch. He's a man, so he couldn't be, but he's a mugg-- doesn't do magic." She smiled at him, glad she'd caught herself in a near slip. "No one knows how he made the stone. And as far as I can tell, no, there aren't. But mostly they keep to themselves, you know? Not really big on the social interaction, so who knows?" She shrugged, not all that worried about it.

"What's the Ministry?" Al asked. "Is it sort of like the Assembly? The Assembly is the head of our government," he explained. "Uhm... What was happening?" He didn't quite follow what she was going on about.

He was glad she wasn't offended by his reaction, though. "So you use that... that wand?" Al wasn't sure if he'd remembered the right word. "You use that to use magic? And the shape shifting, that's magic too?" The more she described alchemists in her world, the more Al thought it sounded like the other side of the Gate where alchemy wasn't so big. "What year are you from? Are you from the place called Germany? Do you know what that is? That's where my brother and I ended up when we crossed through the Gate."

The witch nodded. "Yeah, the Ministry sort of controls everything that goes on in the non-muggle world. In theory, anyway." She looked at him and laughed. "Sorry. You don't have the slightest idea what I'm talking about, do you? It's not really important, don't worry about it."

She drew out the wand from her back pocket. "Yeah, I use this to do stuff." She looked around, saw a small pebble on the floor, and flicked it up with a spell from her wand. It floated there, unsupported by anything. "This is one of the first charms we learn. Wingardium Leviosa The shape shifting is sort of magic, but it's really rare to be able to do it. I'm a metamorphmagus. Most wizards or witches have to use spells or potions to change the way they look."

It was sort of fun, explaining all this. But she ought to think about him, standing there with no idea what was going on. "I'm not from Germany, I'm from England. I know where Germany is though." She tilted her head to the side. "What number is on your key? I'll show you were your room is." As she waited, she smiled at him. "And you can tell me about your brother as we go."

"Did you come from the middle of a war?" Al asked, wondering if that what she meant when she talked about the Ministry and the Dark Lord. The Dark Lord sounded like someone who would have caused the start of a war. "I was in one too but wasn't in any active duty. A homunculus was secretly in charge of the government because it was run by the military. Homunculus usually aren't good people. They all worked for Dante, including the leader of the government. She caused all the wars to happen so she could use people to create a Philosopher's Stone. In my world, you need to sacrifice thousands of people's lives to make a Stone," he confessed, looking down at the ground, his tone quiet. "But then General Mustang destroyed the homunculus and I'm not sure if Dante is still alive or not but there's been no sign of her for years. After the war ended, the government went back to being in control of the Assembly."

Al watched in utter fascination as Tonks used her wand to make the pebble float. "That's amazing!" he exclaimed, his mood having brightened. "You can't do something like that with alchemy! Are spells and potions what you need to use your magic?" he asked, very curious now. "For alchemy, all you really need is a circle, but some people, like me, don't." Wanting to show her his own abilities, he asked, "Do you want me to make you something with alchemy? I can do anything, as long as it's of equal value and inanimate."

When she mentioned Germany and England, his excitement grew. "You're from the other side of the Gate then! I remember hearing about England. My brother told me he ended up in a place called London the first time he went across the Gate. Is there a London in your England? He said flying machines called zeppelins and biplanes were attacking. They were dropping bombs on the city."

Tonks asked about his key and Al was a little surprised he'd almost forgotten about it, having found himself so wrapped up in their conversation. "Oh! Uhm..." He dug it out and looked at it. "It says A190 on it."

The witch noded. "Yeah, you could say that. The Dark Lord was trying to take over the world, more or less. This wouldn't have been a good thing." The words were spoken lightly, but her eyes were very serious and indicated that she'd pretty much made the understatement of the year. She listened to him speak, nodding in sympathy. War was nasty, no doubt about that.

With a flick of her wand, she sent the pebble skipping away and then stuck her wand back into her pocket. "Yeah, most wizards aren't all that good with potions, though. We usually use charms and hexes with our wands." She considered and then grabbed a copper knut from her pocket. "Can you turn this into... I dunno, it's not worth much, really, but maybe a little rock of some kind? Equal value?" She held it out to him, curious to see how this worked.

While she waited, she nodded once more. "I guess so... Yeah, I'm from London, mostly. I mean, I live--or rather, lived-- there before I was taken. And I did most of my work there, too." She blinked. "Biplanes? Sounds like a muggle invention to me." Of course, she was really only guessing, since she hadn't had all that much exposure, really, to muggle history.

"Right, then." She smiled. "I can show you where that is, right enough. It's in A building, room 190. Easy enough."

"Could you tell me more about how this magic works? It sounds really different from alchemy," Al asked, growing more curious by the second.

When she held up the coin, Al laughed. "Oh that's too easy!" He looked around for something that would be bigger and spotted a statue of a cherub angel nearby. "Here, watch this!" Al went over to the statue, clapped his hands together, and placed them on it. Blue light shone around the angel as it changed shaped. With a sheepish grin, Al stepped back and pointed to the statue. It no longer looked like an angel. Instead it was almost a mini replica of Ed. "That's what my brother looks like," he explained.

For a moment, everything else was forgotten. Everything. All she did was stand completely still and watch in awe as the statue changed. She'd never seen anything like that. "Wow." Her eyes were solemn for once. "Even a really powerful wizard would have a hard time transmuting that much..."

Finally, she realized that she was staring like an idiot, blinked, and grinned at him. "That's really brilliant. Anyway, I should show you your room, let's talk as we walk?" Slowly, she was recovering from the amazing sight she'd just seen. "Magic needs a couple of things. First, a wand. Second, an evocation, or the words. Third, the proper gestures with the wand." She thought about that as they walked toward A building. "Most spells, anyway. And some people can do it without speaking any words, but only really talented people." She could do it, if she chose, but she liked the flair of saying the words. Sometimes, as an Auror, she'd had to use silent spells, though.

"Okay," Al said, nodding when she said she would show him where his room was. He clapped his hands together and once again touched the statue, returning it to the original form it was in. "There." He looked back at Tonks, grinning. "Okay, ready."

As he followed her lead, he listened as she explained about her magic. "With alchemy, you need a transmutation circle. I can show you what one looks like later. I don't have any chalk or ink on me to draw one. Some people, though, don't need a circle. We've... seen the Gate," he informed her, his face growing solemn. "If you've seen the Gate, it... means you did something you're not supposed to do with alchemy. Human transmutation. Everything has to have an equivalent value but there's nothing that could ever be equal to a persons soul. Our... our mother died. We were only ten and eleven, so we tried to bring her back. I lost my whole entire body and almost died, but my brother sacrificed his arm to open the Gate up and get my soul, then attached it to a suit of armor. He lost his left leg too. In our world, the Philosopher's Stone heightens your alchemic ability. We searched for it so we could restore our bodies."

Al smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. "To make a long story short, I actually became the Philosopher's Stone, well, my armor did, and my brother was killed so I used it's power to bring him back and then he brought me back, I lost my memories, learned more alchemy, found a way to open the Gate up again and got reunited with my brother because he got pulled to the other side of it. It all sounds really complicated, doesn't it?" he asked with a sheepish laugh. "I got my memory back though! That's why I don't need a circle, because I remember the Gate now."

The witch blinked again as the statue went back to normal. Minerva might have an alright time doing that, but even she might strain a little to do it. She grinned at the boy, and then headed off toward his dormatory.

She listened as Al spoke, noticing the many differences in alchemy and magic. "That's really brilliant..." She walked in relative silence, tripping now and then, but listening raptly to the boy as he told his story. "You've kinda been through a lot, yeah? I still don't quite understand how someone could become the Philosopher's Stone, but I'll take your word on it." After all, she was a pretty good judge of character and was fairly sure he was telling the truth.

Finally, they made there was to the front door of the correct building, and Tonks pushed it open. Once there, she shook snow out of her hair, shivered theatrically, and tapped herself with her wand. Immediatly, her clothes began to steam as they dried. "I'm glad you got your memory back, and I hope you find your brother. Your room should be this way, I think..."

"Oh, it was because I didn't have a body made of flesh. A suit of armor is something that's inanimate, so that's how the Stone was able to become the armor. My soul was attached to the armor, though, so that's how I became the Stone. Does that make more sense?" he asked, not sure if he was just confusing her further.

He followed her inside and watched as she did something with her wand that made her clothes start to steam. "What was that?" Al asked with a large amount of curiosity.

She nodded. While she wasn't familiar with his rules, she did know that magic had them. Why wouldn't alchemy as well? "That makes sense." And it did, more or less.

"This?" She looked down at her wand. "A drying charm." She flicked her wand once more and pointed it at him so he could feel the warm air coming from it. "Really useful." Once they were both dry, her wand went back in her pocket.

"Right, then. Let's go!" She started down the hallway toward where she believed his room was. "Oh, and by the way, it will look pretty boring at first. You just have to concentrate and it will look like whatever you want. Useful, actually." She smiled. "Wish for what you want, and the Planet will usually give it to you. Except freedom, of course."
