Who: Rose and Legolas
When: Day 20, Early afternoon
What: A walk, maybe some grape picking and a meeting
Where: Through the vines
Rating: PG-13 just to be safe
Status: Complete

Rose was bored. Beyond bored. Although there were many things to do here, she still wasn't too fond of being stuck in the one place. She hadn't gotten to know many people, and was starting to regret that. She adored being with the Doctor, of course, but sometimes it was nice to have other people to talk to.

So that's what she decided to do. Go make friends. She saw a few groups of people out within the vines, and decided that it would be a good place to start. After all, everyone had to be friendly here, otherwise the planet would have been worse off.

It was very relaxing, she soon discovered. People smiled at her as she walked past, but none of them seemed very willing to strike up a conversationg with her. So she kept walking, completely lost in thought. Of course, since she was so lost in thought, she never noticed the other person walking towards her, and was only jolted out of her thoughts when she collided with them.

"Oh I'm so sorry!" she quickly rushed.

It wasn't a huge surprise that Legolas would seek the vineyards out. This odd dichotomy between the naturalness of the plants, and the precision with which they were planted that was the exact opposite of natural, he was intruiged. Humans really were quite odd about how they did things, he noticed. Instead of letting the plants be, they poked and prodded them to be more convienant. He didn't have to understand it to find it amusing.

The time just after lunch found him wandering around through the thick vines, taking in all their was to see. As he went, he noticed the other people, but didn't disturb them. They all seemed pretty absorbed in their own worlds, in small groups, pairs, or even single people wandering around. He didn't want to disturb them.

In fact, he noticed a woman wandering entirely alone, seemingly lost in her own world. He watched, somewhat bemued, as she came toward him. She was going to walk right into him, but surely she would look up at the last second... he stepped back at the last minute, so their impact was fairly minor. His eyes sparkled mischieviously as he looked down at her.

"What absorbed you so, that you could lose yourself so fully in your thoughts?" Little things like introductions could be taken care of later, he figured. There were more important things.

Rose let out a sigh of relief at the smile he gave her. Most of the time, people would be very angry if you walked into them, but luckily the damage wasn't all that bad. She smiled back, looking up at him.

"Just how beautiful this place is."

That, among other things, but she had mostly been lost in thoughts and trying to soak in as much of her surroundings as she could. After all, who knew when she'd be able to get out. She looked around again, worried in case they had stopped somewhere that wasn't as beautiful, but that worry was for nothing. She turned to look up at him again, his smile infectious.

"I'm sorry, I should have payed more attention."

The elven prince couldn't disagree with that. He nodded in full agreement. Mirage was strange, yes, but it was also very beautiful. No doubt about that. "It is, indeed, a wonderous place." He smiled again. It was a bit of a natural expression for him, really. It was rare that he wasn't smiling. "Strange, it is true, but lovely."

He shrugged, not really overly worried about their little collision. "It is nothing, my lady. I could have moved out of the way myself," He laughingly confessed, "But I was curious to see how close you would get without noticing. Very close indeed, as I learned." But though his tone was amused, it wasn't the slightest bit chiding.

"Well, my Lady, as it is such a lovely day, and we are both here, why not take this as a sign from the Valar?" He bowed to her and offered her his arm. "Shall we walk? Is there anything in particular you would like to do?" Clearly, he'd decided that he wanted company, and she was around and friendly.

So he had been waiting to see if she'd notice him? Maybe she really did seem out of it completely then, and she can imagine how amusing it would have been. But he had just waited, didn't warn her, so he...wanted her to walk into him? That was quite odd.

"Wanted me to notice you, huh?" she said, a hint of teasing in her voice.

She giggled nervously when he kept calling her 'my lady.' She wasn't use to such formality.

"You don't have to call me that. Rose will do," she said with a smile. Of course, she hadn't told him her name until that moment.

She wrapped her arm around his, a friendly smile on her face.

"Oh not really, I'm not all that sure what there is here actually. I haven't looked around much."

He laughed, the musical noise echoing around the vineyard, before he shook his head slightly. "Of course, for who could not want the attention of so beautiful a girl?" He really was a natural flirt. It was his natural state of being. Besides, it was true. She was beautiful, and elves appreciate beauty.

"Lady Rose, then." He smiled at her. "A compromise between your ways and mine." He nodded with satisfaction as she wound her arm into his. "Rose... a lovely name. I am Legolas of Mirkwood." It was odd how he still introduced himself that way, though he was not in Mirkwood, or even in the same world as his home, and never would be again.

"Well, then, we should just wander. It is quite lovely in these vines, is it not? Tell me about yourself." It was thrown onto the end, but the tone was quite curious. He did actually want to know, and wasn't asking just to make conversation.

Rose couldn't help but blush at his compliment, muttering a quiet 'thank you.' She always felt awkward when being given a compliment for some reason. She nodded at his compromise, agreeing with it.

"I've never been called Lady Rose, but compromising is always the best option. She smiled as he introduced himself. "It's nice to meet you. That's an interesting name."

She kept walking for a moment as she thought quietly about what she could mention. Then again, she never was one to keep her life a secret.

"Well...Considering this is another planet, I suppose I should mention I'm from Earth. I mean, I always have to point that out when I travel so people know where I'm from and I'm not mixed with other species who look like me. I..." she grinned a little as she imagined, trying to put the words together. "I travel through time and space. Though I only have since I was 19, so about a year, I'm not long 20. What about you?"

Though she was blushing, he sensed she wasn't displeased by the compliment. He was glad. His intentions weren't bad, and he wanted the people around him to be as happy as he was. He would have felt pretty bad if he'd annoyed her, and was glad he hadn't.

"My name, in the common tongue, means 'Greenleaf' or 'Greenbranch' or 'From the green wood'. I would ask what your name means, but it seems to me to be self evident."

They wandered through the lines of grapevines, with the elf content to keep his silence as she thought. Of course, not entirely. He did softly hum an elven song as they walked. When she spoke, though, he stopped his song. "Earth, I have heard of others from this planet. London, I believe, is on Earth. And New York, I think." He smiled over at her, still arm-in-arm. "I am an elf from Mirkwood. I have been travelling through Middle Earth to destroy the one ring. Before that, I was a prince in my father's court."

"I'm from London," she said with a smile when he mentioned it. "And I was meant to go to New York but we landed in the wrong place."

She listened in fascination as he spoke about himself.

"Wow, a prince? Very impressive. And you travelled too? We have something in common."

Somehow, she couldn't get that tune he had been humming out of her head. It had sounded so beautiful, so captivating.

"What was...that song you were humming?"

"Are New York and London very close, then?" Of course, he would have no idea about that. He had heard about both of the cities, but from different sources. For all he knew, they might be next door to each other.

"Yes, a prince, though it meant little. My father, being the King, is just as deathless as I am. So I am eternally a prince. But I do not think I would like ruling very much. I would be free, above all things, and not chained to a court."

When she asked about his humming, he laughed and burst into song. It was a cheerful one, about the wedding of Elrond and Celebrian, back in the times before she left for the Grey Havens. A light, cheerful melody, very happy, and also in elven. Of course, by the magic of Mirage, it was translated so she could understand.

"A wedding song, composed by the finest elven bard of the time for the happy union of two great houses. It was quite an occasion, I am told."

Rose shook her head at his question, but didn't appear to be annoyed that he didn't know. She didn't mind telling people things like this.

"No, they're quite a distance away. Hours on a plane, even longer if you travel car and boat. New York is in America, London is in Britain."

She listened along to his singing, enjoying the way it seemed to flow perfectly. She couldn't help but grin as he laughed and sung with no embarrassment. He seemed to not care if anyone was listening, and she admired that.

"It sounds so happy."

There were all sorts of fun new words in there that Legolas didn't know, but he had also learned that if he asked for a definition every time he didn't understand something, they'd never get anywhere. He understood the gist of what she was saying, and that was the important thing. Plane, car, he didn't know. Boat, however, was a method of travel even on his own world. The other two must be as well.

"I see." When the song was done, he bowed to her and then continued walking. "Wedding songs ought to be, do you not think so? And it was a good thing that they were married, both for Rivendell and Lothlorien. The elves grew stronger because of it. And of course..." He smiled slightly. "The two were very much in love."

"Yes, of course. You wouldn't expect a wedding song to be unhappy." Rose smiled as he spoke a little of the wedding and how important it was. She had seen things like this before, marriages which bonded two places together. But rarely the couple were in love. Of course, being the girl she was, she found the idea of love so fantastic and couldn't help but smile.

"Yes, when two people are in love, nothing quite beats that."

As they wandered by, Legolas' eye was drawn by a particularly juicy looking bunch of grapes. Without stopping, really, he plucked them from the vine as he wandered by, and started popping the sweet fruit into his mouth. With a slight inclination of his head, he offered her a couple.

"These are quite good... normally, human cultivated food tastes so bland to me. Still, I suppose this is not quie human-grown." He frowned thoughtfully. "Do you suppose the golems come out and tend to the vines while the rest of us are asleep? I never see anyone working in here during the day..."

But her words brought him back to an important topic in his eyes, and he nodded firmly. "Yes, you are quite correct, Lady Rose. There is quite simply nothing in the world as incredible as love."

Rose shrugged, taking one grape off the bunch he had taken, popping it in her mouth. She had to admit, it did taste better than anything that could be made on Earth. She'd have to find out about that.

"It's a possibility. Maybe it's just the planet itself? Some planets could maybe do that."

Rose smiled, nodding as she looked up at the sky for a moment as they walked, trusting that were she to loose her footing or was going to bump into anything, he would help her. He didn't seem like the type to just let her get hurt.

"You're right."

When the last grape had been eaten, the consciencious elf let the stem fall to the ground, so that it could nourish the soil and provide better years of growth in the future. Sure, it was probably futile in a planet that would change in a couple of days anyway, but old habits die hard. Especially for the elven folk.

"This talk of planets is strange to me... on my world, we have no knowledge of that world. Our world is the only world, or so I thought before coming here."

He shrugged slightly, but let the whole question go as he looked over at her. His arm steadied her quite well, so that she didn't stumble or trip. Her smile was beautiful. "Do you know love, then, Lady Rose?"

"Talk of being on other planets a couple of years back would have sounded crazy to me, but having travelled to different ones recently, I've gotten use to it."

She could feel his arm holding onto her, and suddenly felt exceptionally comfortable in his presence. When he asked her if she knew love, she couldn't help but smile as the face of the Doctor swam before her eyes.

"Yes. Yeah, I guess I do. Although, sometimes I doubt he knows, or if he even loves me." She looked up at him, and her smile grew a little wider. Something about him just made her melt.

He nodded thoughtfully. "It is quite impossible to know everything about everything, even for an elf who will live many years before going to Valinor. Elrond, though he knows much, had no knowledge of these... planets. Or, if he did, he did not share such knowledge with me." He laughed playfully. "Perhaps, I know something that even the very wise on my world do not... I would have such fun playing with them if I went back!"

As she spoke, he kept his arm linked lightly in hers and stopped, turning toward her. His eyes were very, very serious as he looked at her. "If you love, Lady Rose, you must tell it. Love is not something that can be kept inside." Clearly, he was speaking from experience.

"After all, if he loves you as well, then how will you be aware of this unless you ask him?" He pondered that for a moment before taking off through the vines, still holding her arm and tugging her along with him. "Perhaps he is waiting, wondering the same things that you are."

Rose sighed, trying to think of the best way to explain the Doctor, and her occasional doubt about his feelings for her.

"He once said to me that I can spend my life with him, but he can't with me. He'll live for thousands of years, I get hardly anything compared to that. He goes on alone, and when I die..." she sighed again, looking at her feet. "When I die, if I tell him I love him and if he lets himself love me he'll hurt far more. I can't let that happen."

It might have sounded needlessly complicated to some people, but Legolas understood all too well. He dropped her arm, but grabbed her hand and dragged her out of the vines and over to a small tree nearby. There, he sat down and looked up at her, clearly expecting her to do the same.

"Lady Rose, there is a story I would tell you that will perhaps help you. From the perspective that, perhaps, the Doctor might see things from, which may make things easier."

Somehow managing to be graceful despite the fact that he was sitting cross-legged and looking up at her, he waited.

Rose listened as he spoke, hoping he would continue. When he didn't, she finally drew her eyes to him, noticing the expectant look on his face. Smiling a little, she stepped towards him, sitting down next to him.

"Go on then. Make things easier."

He hesitated for a moment, not because he was unsure of himself, but because he was trying to put his thoughts into an order that he could express in a way that she could understand. Once his thoughts were organized, he looked at her as she settled down.

"I am an elf, Lady Rose. I shall live until the end of the world, if not longer. Nothing can truly kill me. So, you see, your Doctor and I have much in common." He looked at her to see if she understood, before he kept going.

"I am in love with a human. Though he is of a long-lived race, he will still die after a couple of hundred years." He sighed softly. "Lady Rose, in my world, humans and elves rarely mix, but every so often, there is a human so intruiging that they gain the attention of an elf. But, for that elf, it is always worth it. The energy and unpredictablity of the humans add a depth to the short time that they spend together, that it is never matched at any other time in the long life of the elf." He reached out and tilted her chin up so that she met his eyes.

"Have you not thought that, perhaps for your Doctor, it would be the same?"

Rose listened with fascination to his tale. So the Doctor was similar to Legolas, in the way that they both would live a long time. Longer than those who would love them. Unlike she would have done, she was not shocked when he mentioned loving a man, like she was when she met Jack. She was beginning to learn that not everyone went by Earth's traditional standards. Especially since the man before her wasn't Human. She looked away as he spoke, not wanting to make him feel to uncomfortable, but when he tilted her chin up, her eyes met his easily.

"I'm unsure. He's stubborn, very stubborn. And he loves Humans, adores Earth. I don't know, I might just be another human to him."

To Legolas, it was forever a source of bewilderment that humans had this hang up about same sex relationships. In his world, while it wasn't common, at least among the elves it was accepted. He actually usually ended up forgetting that it was such a big deal to so many people. So he didn't even think about hiding it.

"How can you know, though, if you do not ask?" He gently let his hand fall into his lap, but continued looking directly into her eyes. "I cannot tell you that you must do this thing, but would it not be better to know than to be living in doubt, as you are?"

"And then be humilated when he laughs in my face?" she spoke quietly, showing her fear of being rejected by him. "I've never felt this way about anyone before, I couldn't handle my heart being broken."

She held his gaze a moment, before looking away.

"I can't tell him."

"Well, that is your perogative. I believe it is the right choice, but... I am not you." He shrugged and rose to his feet, bowing down at her politely.

"I have enjoyed our conversation, my Lady. We must do it again, but alas, I fear I must leave. I hope we meet again. May the Valar smile on you until we meet again."

He had enjoyed his time with her, but he did have other things to do today and, as well, it was hard to be around her. He'd hid things from his King for awhile, and she reminded him of himself. It was uncomfortable.
