Faith gets in trouble
WHO: Snape and Faith
WHAT: Crime and Punishment
WHEN: Day Fifteen, mid-morning
WHERE: Starts in the bar...
RATING: PG-13
STATUS: Complete

Where was that blasted girl? Snape had been looking for her all morning. He had tried every place he could think of, the gym, the training ground, the dining hall, even the library. He had barely taken a second glance at the pseudo-Tuscan countryside that they had all woken up to. That bloody Slayer! These training sessions were important! Didn't she know that?

Finally, after going so far as to ask strangers if they had seen her, Snape began to look in what he considered the unlikely locations. He tried the theatre, the games room, the pool; all with no luck. In the end, Faith was, of course, in the last place he looked, only this was also the last place he would ever have thought to look. She was in the bar.

Striding in like a thundercloud, his black cloak billowing behind him, Snape came up behind his charge and grabbed her by the back of her neck. He was furious, but he resisted the urge to pull his wand out. The volume of his voice rose with each of his angry statements.

"Do you know we had an appointment for eight AM? Do you know I have looked everywhere, everywhere for you? Do you know how put out I am to find you here, of all places, at eleven in the morning?? I am your Watcher!"

Faith had had better nights. Of course, she'd also had far, far worse nights. But she was still in more than a little pain, though her quick healing had taken care of most of the severe bruising. It would take a couple of days to completely heal, though, and she'd be sore until then. It wasn't the first time, it wouldn't be the last. Logan had, without a doubt, put her through her paces. She idly wondered what his deal was. He seemed awfully strong, and the fact that it felt like slamming into a brick wall to hit him was also interesting.

That was in the past, though. She'd been surprised that the strange man had taken care of her, bandaged her, but it was over. Thanks to him knocking her out, though, she'd actually gone to bed at a decent time. It was a surprise to her when she'd awoken before noon. She felt slightly off because of it.

She'd wandered aimlessly for a couple of hours, looking unispiredly at the new surroundings, before deciding it was too damn early in the morning for this. Finally, she'd noticed a door leading to a bar. Well, that was more like it! She wondered if Mirage would serve minors, but it was supposed to give them what they wanted, right? So she gave it a try, wandered into the room, and ordered a drink. She smirked when she was served the beer she ordered.

She'd gotten a bit of a buzz going when she felt a hand on her neck. Spinning around in her stool, she grabbed the hand and twisted it, hard. She had a thing against being touched unexpectedly. It tended to bring out the worst in her. A snarl crossed her pretty features, distorting them, until she realized who it was. She stopped just short of breaking his wrist, and dropped his hand.

"I have an idea. Go to hell. I'm not even close to in the mood."

Snape was not amused. This was not, in his mind, the way a Slayer treated her Watcher. He had every right to be upset, and she had no right to give him that kind of response. He didn't care what kind of a mood she was in. This kind of disrespect stopped now. Flexing his sore hand to make sure it still functioned properly he pulled his wand with the other. His face was a contorted portrait of fury.

"I am your Watcher, and you will show me respect! Levicorpus!"

With a quick flick of his wand, Faith felt herself pulled away from the bar, up off the bar stool, and into the air. Quickly, before she could properly respond her entire body was inverted, and she found herself hanging upside-down somewhere near the ceiling. With nothing nearby to push against, she was almost powerless to get out of this position. Snape's glowering face loomed in front of her own.

"You must understand, Faith, that I am more powerful than you. I have not yet shown you the full extent of my power. We have entered into a sacred bond, and I will ensure that you keep up your end. You cannot prevent that. Patronizing a public house such as this one before noon is not acceptable and will not happen again! Am I clear?"

She'd heard this crap before, from Giles, as well as from her Watcher before. It all sounded like nothing, to her. She didn't even focus on the words. blah blah blah, Water, blah blah blah respect... Then....

"Hey, what the hell?"

She'd caught a word that she didn't know, and had been paying just enough attention to notice. She half turned around, in time to catch out of the corner of her eye the raised... stick thing. She didn't know what it was. Even if she had, there wouldn't have been time to get away before the spell took effect. She squirmed. It was getting really old, actually, people doing things with her body that she didn't approve of. Logan beating her, as much as she hated to admit he had, and now this.

"God damned motherfucking hell! Let me down right this fucking second, you fucking Brit bastard! You are going to be in serious hurt once I..."

Her barrage of insults and threats that would make a sailor blush was cut off as she clutched at her chest. She had healed quite a lot since last night. But then, she'd had odd dreams all night, and hadn't slept as well as she could have. Anyway, it would take probably several days to fully heal. Her abused lungs woke up as the blood flowed down into her head, and her body was stretched in ways it wasn't usually.

As she clutched her chest briefly, which few would notice, she stopped hurling words, as well. The second thing was much more noticable, all told. She was very quiet, refusing to speak in case the pain she was feeling came into her voice. It was a pride thing.

Snape merely continued to glare smugly as his inverted Slayer hurled insults at him. Let her fume and sputter. He would silence her at his will. He was pleased to have caught her off-guard, to have surprised her. Her anger was a testament to the fact that he had done so. She would learn, sooner or later, that his commands were not to be ignored.

Enjoying his smugness as he did, he was surprised when Faith touched her chest briefly then ceased to speak. Snape narrowed his eyes. What kind of childish ploy was this? He changed his attitude, however, when he saw the uncharacteristic look of helpless pain flash across her face, replaced instantly though it was with an expression of defiant stoicism. He stepped closer to her, though not quite within arm's-reach of her.

"What's the matter? Are you... hurt?"

Looking around the bar, he saw that there was no one there besides the golem bartender there this early in the day. Perhaps it would not be inappropriate for him to command her to remove her shirt so he could have a better look. If she had received an injury, there were many things he could do to heal her. Besides, after seeing the young woman naked the other day, Snape had been unable to get the image out of his mind. If he were honest with himself, he would admit that he had been hoping for another look.

She really, really hated perceptive people. They irritated her to no end, mostly since she just plain wasn't used to it. Most people, she'd found, didn't really care enough to be perceptive. Sure, for their best friend, they might have the most heightened senses in the world, but for someone new... she sneered slightly as she remembered seeing Buffy and Willow somehow notice everything about each other, and pretty much manage to ignore her existance. Not that she cared.

"Nah, I'm five by five. Thanks for asking. Now, it's been a lot of fun, but let me the fuck down. Now. This isn't a request."

She wasn't aware of his thoughts, of course, which was just as well. If he had been, she would have tried to find some way to use it to her advantage. Or, certainly, she would have at least directed his attention away from her injury. As it was, she just had to hope he'd let her down. Because as her head filled with blood, her lungs were having to work harder to pump air through her system. And that didn't exactly feel good.

Snape mostly ignored Faith's words, choosing to let her down when he felt like it, not because she demanded it. He could tell she was hurt, and needed to learn more before he would let her 'off the hook' as one might say. He needed to examine her chest more closely. Removing her shirt in the bar, however, might be going too far. This would all be better done in his room. Moving to stand behind her, he flicked his wand once and she instantly turned upright and fell to the floor. Snape caught her about the waist and, before she could orient herself, Apparated to his suite, bringing them directly to his laboratory. He released her, and went to poke through his bottles and vials of strange liquids.

"Remove your shirt."

Selecting several nasty looking substances from the shelves, he returned and set them on the table. He was determined to get to the bottom of this situation, even without his Slayer's cooperation. She would learn that he took his responsibility to her very seriously.

Even with her quick reflexes, she didn't have the chance to do anything more than blink before she was standing in Snape's room. Not that she knew where she was, she'd never been there before. But she wasn't overly concerned with that just at the moment. She fell into a defensive stance, eyes narrowed as she looked at her Watcher.

"You know, if you wern't my Watcher, you'd be going the right fucking way for a kicked ass."

His words had her raising her eyebrows skeptically, although a rush of heat went through her. Adreneline always had an interesting affect on her, and his magic had definately gotten the hormones pumping.

"Not the most romantic proposition ever... I knew there was a reason I liked you."

The dark-haired Slayer looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, wondering what exactly he was up to. One thing was sure in her mind, he wasn't really hitting on her, no matter what her words would lead someone to believe she thought. She shrugged, slightly painfully, and stripped her shirt over her head, tossing it negligently aside. Underneath, she wore no bra.

"Now what, Skeletor?"

Snape allowed Faith to ramble on as she wished. Her words did not deter him from his course. He was not intimidated or discouraged by the attitude she showed him. Perhaps she was nervous. Perhaps she was irritated. It did not matter.

"But I am your Watcher. What I do is in your best interest."

He was secretly very pleased when she removed her shirt, and not merely because he once again got a glimpse of her young, well-formed body. He was pleased because he had only had to tell her once. Clearly, for all her bluster, she understood and respected the Watcher/Slayer relationship. She deserved a small reward. Perhaps he would not apply the stinging tincture of Cryptomeria this time.

Her stared at her bared chest. Ignoring the aesthetic appeal of her breasts, he observed the large, dark, contustion spreading across the middle of it. Where on Mirage had she gotten that? It must have been a serious blow for her to still be showing it. What he needed to determine was whether the damage was merely external.

"Raise your arms and take a deep breath."

She sneered at him as he spoke, but it was true. He'd played the only card anyone could that would make her even begin to respect them. All three of her Watchers on earth had had a much better time of it with her. Not that she'd made it easy, clearly, but for the girl who respected no one and nothing, it was a big step to even do as she was told, attitude or not.

"Whatever, Doctor."

She sighed and rolled her eyes, not even trying to hide it, as she slowly did as she was told. A minor miracle, really. But when was the last time anyone had helped her like this? She'd rarely been to a real doctor, and mostly took care of herself. There was a certain... appeal to being taken care of like this. It made her feel sort of odd, really. But she was almost sure she liked it.

"What now? Sommersaults? I can juggle, if you want..."

Snape continued to be pleased with Faith's obedience. Despite her snide comments and disrespectful tone, he knew this was more than she was prepared to give to most people. He wondered just how much he could get her to do. He had no doubt he would rebel if he crossed a line. Still, it would be interesting to find out where that line was.

Applying his mind back to the problem at hand, he had definitely noticed a wincing when she had inhaled, and the breath had not been as deep as he would have thought normal. Whatever had injured her had given her more than a bruise. He pointed at her purple chest.

"Lower your arms. How did you get this?"

His mind ran over the possible treatments he would need to deliver. In addition to the bruise, she likely had sore ribs, and possibly a partially-collapsed lung. Salves applied to the skin ranked highly on his list of potential treatments.

Again, she rolled her eyes, but did as he ordered. This time, though, it was because it actually hurt to have her arms raised as she did. Since she hadn't been given any further instruction, she just stood around and watched curiously as he poked around through his things.

"Whatcha doing?"

She glanced down at her chest, shrugged, and tried to decide what to tell him. She certainly wasn't adverse to lying, but wasn't sure how much point there was to doing so now. She hadn't been doing anything wrong. Although she had been known to lie just for fun, of course, and especially to authority figures like her Watcher.

"How do you think, Brainiac? Got into a fight, sparring match or whatever. No big."

Snape gave Faith a look that might be described as a glare. He was glad of her obedience, but slightly exasperated with her casual attitude toward her injuries. He stepped up in front of her and took her chin in his hand so she had to look him in the eye.

"Actually, it is a big, a very big! First of all, this is a serious injury. Even with your exceptional healing, this damage persists. This is not the kind of injury you will be getting lightly. Am I understood? As your Watcher, I will decide when you are to engage an enemy capable of doing this to you, when you are to risk this kind of harm! Secondly, when you are hurt in this way, you must tell me immediately! I do not want to find you medicating yourself in a drinking establishment! I have extensive skills in healing, and it is my duty as your Watcher to repair you when possible. Now, don't move, and let me do my work!"

Releasing her chin, he reached for a glass jar from the table. The jar appeared to contain a grey, muddy substance. Opening it, he dipped his fingers into its contents and brought out a large dollop of the goop. Working gently, not pressing, he smeared the paste over the sizable bruise on her chest with his fingers. Due to its mint content, the salve tingled on her skin, and opened her nose with its fumes.

She tried very, very hard not to notice how good the salve felt going on. She never went to doctors, never needed to since she healed so fast. Of course, if she'd stayed in Sunnydale, she would have spent lots of time in the hospital after being stabbed by Buffy, but she had no way of knowing that. His fingers felt nice, though, and she found herself relaxing a little despite everything.

"Don't spazz, big S, chill. I got it."

Not that she really thought that everytime she was going to get into a fight, she would ask for permission. If something attacked, well, she wasn't going to sit back and wait to be told to attack. Not her style. Even in the case of Logan, well, she'd wanted to fight and wouldn't run back to ask her Watcher if it were okay.

"Hey, um... what's in that shit, anyway? Smells like toothpaste!"

Snape's glare lessened. He did not completely understand the words Faith chose to express herself, but her tone of voice was more than clear. She relented, but was still defiant. He was satisfied for now. As he rubbed the salve gently over the young woman's bruised skin, he took the opportunity of mindfulness to gaze upon the chest over which his fingers played. Moreover, he was not too careful about restricting his touch merely to the bruised area, taking liberty to spread the salve almost an inch further in each direction than was strictly necessary.

"See that you do get it. What's in this? A variety of herbs: vervain, lambswort, peppermint, chamomile. Also, talc and cooked pumpkin for an application medium. Is that what you brush your teeth with where you come from?"

Part of Snape's mind attempted to assess whether the Slayer had learned the lesson he was attempting to teach her. Should he have used a more painful medicine? Surely it was clear to her now that he would not be amused if she broke his rules. He suspected it was not so certain that she would hold herself to them. Meanwhile the other part of his mind wondered if there was a way he could extend this opportunity to touch the naked body of his Slayer, a body which he was quite beginning to find most beautiful.

It felt nice, the cooling salve on her wounded skin. Already, she could feel the bruises fading, and the pain was dulling as well. Her healing was quite quick as it was, but it was speeding up considerably with his healing. She felt her eyelids grow heavy, despite the fact that it wasn't yet noon, and she stifled a yawn.

"Pretty wicked meds you got there, Doc man. I know places that would pay a shitload for stuff like this, you know? Could make tons. Sell it on the streets of New York..."

As he finished spreading the salve, she found herself leaning against him. Whatever was in it, it had had the effect of coming very close to knocking her out. Dimly, she was annoyed by the fact that she seemed to spend more time unconscious than awake at this point, but mostly she was just sleepy.

Snape could see Faith's bruise fading before his eyes as he worked the salve gently into her skin. It was faster than he expected, though with her resilience he supposed he ought to be impressed that she bruised at all. It was clear, however, that the necessity of his application of medication was fading along with her contusion.

"Though, once again I believe I may be following your words, I must disagree with your proposals. I have no interest in peddling my valuable concoctions to ignorant American muggles, and less interest in muggle moneys."

As the ointment worked its effect, his Slayer appeared to become drowsy and began to lean against him. Rubbing her chest became awkward and he decided to stop. Clearly, the session was coming to an end. He supposed it was time for her to leave, but he had begun to doubt her ability to stand, much less walk to her rooms.

It came to him that the simplest solution would be to lay her in his bed. It was wide enough to accomodate both of them, if it should happen that she be not awake when it came time for him to retire. Most importantly, it was only three yards away from where they stood. Allowing her to rest her weight on him, Snape dragged the young woman towards his bed.
