Day Thirteen
Who: Emma and Haruka
What: Her arrival
Where: Courtyard
When: Day 13, Mid-morning
Rating: PG
Status: In progress.

Emma had been hit hard by Ray's death. It had been days since she'd helped him to move on, but no matter what she did, she couldn't stop thinking about him. The memories and emotions she'd experienced had been his, not hers. A victim taking possession of her mind had never happened before. She was supposed to be a powerful mutant; she still didn't understand how that had happened.

Sitting in her room at Sanctuary, Emma knew what she had to do. The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. Emma was leaving Mutant X. She needed to get away; sort through this mess. Maybe being away for a bit would help. Sighing to herself, Emma knew her teammates wouldn't be happy with her decision. But, it was for the best.

Coming to her feet, Emma stretched in an attempt to ease the tension out of her body. Knowing what she had to do, Emma let out a slow breath as she opened the door. It was time to face her teammates; it was now or never. The only problem was, when Emma opened her eyes, she was suddenly in a random courtyard. Sanctuary didn't have a courtyard. Thinking that maybe she was reading someone's thoughts unconsciously, Emma closed her eyes and re-opened them. Nothing changed.

This definitely wasn't Sanctuary. Sure, Emma had thought about leaving but she hadn't meant like this! She stood in the unfamiliar courtyard, looking a bit confused. What was going on?

Haruka had woken with the dawn this morning, on her own, which was unusual for her. Usually, Michiru had to drag her out of bed when they didn't have plans for the day. But today, she'd woken up, and felt fully awake as the sun cast its first light through their window. Rather than wake Michiru, she decided to let her lover sleep in, and to go out for a run instead. She hadn't been running since the battle with Galaxia. She hadn't felt up to it. But now that she and Michiru had reunited, Haruka found she was much more amenable to a lot of things. And she missed running.

She took a page from Michiru's book and asked the planet for a suitable running outfit and sneakers, and was mildly surprised to find them laid out and waiting for her in the bathroom. She splashed water on her face and changed quickly, then slipped from the room, pausing only long enough to grab her henshin wand and her room key, which fit in a convenient zippered pocket on her track pants.

She started out at a light jog, down to the beach, but soon felt the need to push herself again. Now that she'd loosened up her muscles, she broke into a sprint, dashing up the sand toward the main building. She lapped the entire thing twice, wishing there were a track she could run on, before deciding to take a breather. She found herself in the courtyard near her building, where Rogue had showed her the plaque on her first day. She wandered over to it, regarding it critically. No, the words hadn't changed now that the rain had stopped.

Haruka was about to resume her laps when a young woman appeared out of thin air a few paces from her, her back to Haruka. Haruka blinked. Was that how she'd looked when she ended up here, just popping out of thin air like that? It was like a Sailor Teleport, only with one person, and lack of damage to the ground below.

"Good morning," Haruka called, figuring the woman had to be confused. Not that Haruka understood everything that went on with this Mirage place, but she might be able to help a little.

To say that Emma was confused was an understatement. She was flat out dumbstruck at how it was she'd come to be here. She didn't have the power to teleport or project herself to other places. Emma was an empath, plain and simple.

Hearing a voice call out to her, Emma turned and eyed her cautiously. She had yet to rule out the Genetic Security Agency; Eckhart could be behind this. She wasn't about to trust anyone, not yet anyway. "Morning," Emma called out, not wanting to seem rude. "Could you tell me where I am? I'm... not sure how I got here," she added. Yeah, the woman probably thought she was crazy. Oh well. She'd been called worse.

She seemed to be handling the situation more calmly than Haruka herself had a few days earlier. Her tone of voice sounded almost normal. "It's a little complicated," she said. "I don't expect you to believe me, at least not right away. It took me a while to wrap my head around it, and it wasn't that foreign a concept to me." She chuckled, then winced. Michiru would be very angry at her if she forgot her manners. She could almost hear the scolding tone of her lover now.

She bowed to the woman quickly, trying to cover her gaffe. It wasn't a particularly low bow, but it was enough for politeness. "I'm Haruka," she said. She took a few steps closer to the woman, offering her a smile.

Oh, Emma was handling it, all right. She was pretty sure she'd have a freak out later. Better when no one could see her and she could let her guard down. "Complicated has become the norm in my life," Emma admitted, with a short laugh. Oh, that was the understatement of the year.

"Nice to meet you Haruka," Emma smiled, having not expected the bow. "I'm Emma."

Haruka raised an eyebrow at her comment. It sounded like something she'd say, if she were in a snarky mood. "However complicated it's been for you," she said, folding her arms across her chest, "it's about to get even worse." She smiled at the greeting before continuing. "Have you ever traveled to another planet before?"

The question probably sounded ridiculous to the woman. How many people knew about space travel on her world? So few knew about it on Haruka's world, after all. Yet, there were people here for whom such a thing was perfectly reasonable. She didn't want to assume anything about Emma's background. It might not be as much of a shock if she was used to travel between the stars.

"Why am I not surprised?" Emma replied, letting out a small sigh. Such was her life, up to now. What with the situation at Mutant X and with the GSA, it always got worse. At least this might be a different kind of worse? "Traveled to another planet? No, never. Why do you ask?"

Emma was confused. That seemed like an odd question to ask. Granted, space travel was possible in her world; astronauts had visited the moon and they'd sent probes to Mars and the like. "I mean, people have gone to the moon. Just not me, personally."

Haruka couldn't say she was surprised at the reaction. It would have made things so much easier to explain if Emma had traveled among the stars. She took a deep breath. "You may not believe me, then, but please trust me when I tell you what's happening. I'm not making anything up, and I don't enjoy practical jokes." Well, that wasn't entirely true. She enjoyed them if they involved making certain pop stars look ridiculous. But she didn't joke when the situation was serious.

Haruka wandered toward the plaque Rogue had showed her when she first arrived. "Wherever you were before, you're very far away from that place. We're trapped on a planet called Mirage. How or why we've been brought here, no one seems to know. But we can't leave. Not yet, at least. People have been trying to find a way off the planet, but with little success." This last was supposition on her part, but it had to be true. The personalities of the people she'd met and heard of wouldn't allow for passive acceptance of their fate. She laid her hand on plaque. "This explains the rules of the planet, sort of. Basically, we can have whatever we want, except a way home, and we aren't allowed to kill anyone." She smirked. "Not that I'd want to, but I'm sure there's at least someone here for whom that particular rule is a hardship." Why else bring senshi and other heroes to the planet, after all? She looked up at Emma, trying to gauge how she was processing everything Haruka had told her.

If this had been before Emma had joined up with Mutant X, she would've have dismissed Haruka's explanation flat out. But considering some of the things she'd seen why trying to save people? It really didn't seem that far-fetched. Then again, this could end up being a dream. But, for now, Emma was inclined to believe. At least until something gave her reason not to.

"You think this is someone's idea of a practical joke?" It definitely sounded like something Gabriel Ashlocke would attempt. If he were still alive, that is. "I suppose our situation could be worse," Emma admitted.

A practical joke? Haruka might have thought something similar when she first arrived, had it not been in the middle of a hurricane. She shook her head sadly. "I doubt it. Some people have been here for almost two weeks now, I think. I've been here a few days, myself." She gave Emma an appraising look as the woman decided it could be worse. That was certainly one way to look at it. All in all, she seemed to be taking this rather well.

"We should find your key for you," Haruka said, turning toward the main building. "Everyone has a room, sort of like a hotel room, I suppose. It'll probably end up looking like your room at home, wherever home is, but if you don't like it, you can change it." She offered her hand to Emma. "Come on, the lobby's this way. That's probably where your key will be."

Emma hadn't meant for it to sound so casual. She knew this wasn't some kind of elaborate prank; this was a serious situation. She was just trying to sugar coat it a tiny bit, so her freaking out would be, well, less severe. "And you said no one could leave?" That didn't make any sense. Especially when they seemed to have every thing they could want, at their disposal.

How odd. "Oh, well, at least that takes care of shelter," Emma was equally surprised by that. They were even provided rooms! This kept getting stranger and stranger. She accepted Haruka's hand, after considering her odds for a moment. What did she have to lose? It wasn't like she was defenseless. "Right, okay. Thanks. For helping me out."

"Not that we're aware of, no," Haruka said. "The plaque says we can't leave at all." She didn't know how much Emma knew about special powers, so she kept her own attempts to herself. She and Michiru had tried using a Sailor Teleport a few times, to no avail.

Haruka closed her fingers around Emma's hand and led her through the pool area and into the hallway that led to the lobby. "I'm glad to help," she said. "I'd have been lost the first day I arrived, if someone hadn't shown me around and explained what was happening." She smirked. "Be glad you've got nice weather today. When I arrived, I found myself in the middle of a typhoon."

As they entered the lobby, Haruka noticed a blinking light above a key just behind the desk. She inclined her head, indicating the light. "That must be yours," she said. She let go of Emma's hand and strolled behind the desk. If one of those strange creatures had a problem with her going into the area, too bad. It'd end up with a "World Shaking" between the eyes. Fortunately, none of those things appeared, and she swiped the key from it's little hook, holding it up to the light to read the room assignment before walking back around to offer it to Emma. "A 205," she said. "That's a couple of buildings down from mine."

"Oh," Emma frowned, not liking the sound of that. This place really was strange, if only for that fact alone. Oh, Emma knew about special powers, she had one by way of an experiment gone wrong. Not that she blamed Adam for what happened; he had his own reasons, he was only trying to help.

"A typhoon? Ouch," Emma made a face, suddenly very happy that there was nothing on the horizon, except for a few clouds. "Does the weather vary from day to day here?"

Seeing the blinking light, Emma raised an eyebrow. She wondered if this place could get any odder. It would be nice if she had someone from back home here with her. Maybe things wouldn't seem so strange, if Shalimar or Brennan was here. "I guess so?" How it knew she was here was beyond her. Add that to the list of things to discover at a later date. Emma took the key from Haruka, smiling lightly. "Thanks. A 205, huh? Well, at least I'll have someone familiar nearby, then." It was a small comfort, but she'd take it.

Haruka nodded in response to Emma's comment on weather. "The typhoon raged for a few days, but the weather's been relatively nice ever since. Warmer than I would have expected, but pleasant." She sincerely hoped there wouldn't be any more troublesome weather anytime soon. The typhoon had made her feel a little out of sorts, since the winds were so violent.

She smiled as Emma took her key. "Having a familiar face around can help quite a bit," she said. "Please feel free to come by anytime. If I'm not in, you can leave a note on the door, or with my Michiru, if she's in." Hopefully Michiru wouldn't react too poorly to Haruka inviting pretty young ladies over without consulting her first. She was friends with that elf-man, after all. She looked back at Emma, suddenly aware that she was starting to get wrapped up in her own thoughts. "I can show you around a little, if you'd like, or show you where your room is. I know this whole situation is a lot to take in all at once."

"I suppose we can be thankful for that, then?" Emma wondered if there was someone here who controlled the weather. Made it randomly change to surprise the inhabitants... really, she wouldn't be shocked to find that to be true. Okay, maybe she would, if only a little.

"Thanks, Haruka. I'm not sure what I would have done without you," Emma meant every word. "Yeah, it is a bit overwhelming," she nodded. "Maybe I should check out my room, I think a little meditation is in order." It would help her sort out her thoughts and maybe calm her down.

Haruka smiled. "It's no problem at all," she said as Emma offered her thanks. "Everyone here has gone through something similar when they arrived. Someone was kind enough to help me, and I'm sure if you ever meet someone new, you'll be able to help them as well. We've got to keep a watch on each other, since we're all stuck here." And, all work together to find a way home. Haruka didn't doubt for a moment that there was a way off this planet. They just had to figure out what it was and use it.

Haruka headed toward the front door of the lobby, motioning for Emma to follow. "I'll show you where A is, if you want to head to your room. It's essentially just around the corner." She wasn't surprised that Emma just wanted to go to her room. She'd done the same thing, after all, when she first arrived. She didn't know anything about Emma's circumstances where she came from, but it was possible she'd been separated from people she loved and cared about and needed the time to adjust. She only hoped Emma didn't have as cruel a surprise waiting behind her door as Haruka had on her first day, before she'd discovered Michiru at the party.

"Oh, I'll certainly try," Emma nodded, wondering if she'd be able to help them out like Haruka had helped her. It was nice. She only hoped she could do as good a job with a new arrival. "It doesn't seem like there's anyone else to do it."

Which was weird, but that was neither here nor there. "Not too far, then," Emma commented, wondering what her room was going to look like and if there'd be anything in there resembling home. Meditating seemed like a good idea; it would help Emma to relax and maybe make sense of this place. She'd let her worry consume her later.

"There are...things...that live here," Haruka said as they walked. "Creatures made of stone and wood and such. They can't talk, or won't talk, I'm not sure which. But they'll get you almost anything you want." It sounded ludicrous to her own ears, and she'd seen the things. They'd poured her drinks, underage. She could only imagine how it sounded to Emma.

She led Emma out the door and around the corner of the main resort building to the one labeled "A". She held open the door for Emma and let the other woman step inside ahead of her. At least this time, she could be the gallant one. "205 is probably the second floor," she said, turning for the stairs. The building looked almost exactly like her own from the inside. Not surprising at all.

Haruka reached the second floor and turned to make sure Emma was following. "Just over here," she said, scanning the doors for the proper number. She leant against the wall beside 205. "I hope whatever's behind the door isn't too big a of a shock for you," she remarked.

"So, they're kind of like the staff?" Emma was surprised by that. She figured someone, or something had to take care of the place, but that they wouldn't see anyone doing so.

Emma was definitely going to have to get the lay of the land sometime soon. Maybe tomorrow. Right now, she was going to check out her room, see what it looked like inside. "Thanks," Emma smiled, stepping into the building.

She stopped in front of the door, frowning slightly. "What do you mean?" Emma figured the room would be pretty bare -- fairly normal. Haruka's comment threw her for a loop.

"Kind of," Haruka replied. She'd never really thought of them as 'staff,' but it made sense. Who else would tend to the grounds? There certainly weren't any other people here aside from the prisoners.

Haruka took a breath as she tried to figure out how to explain the rooms. "The planet is...slightly psychic," she said, halting over the word 'psychic'. She had no idea if psychic powers existed where Emma came from. She wasn't really used to the idea, except that Rei-chan had a sixth sense, and, in a way, Hotaru-chan did as well. But neither of them could read minds the way the planet could. "It...it gives us what we want, or think we want. When I arrived here, and opened my door, I walked into a room that was an exact replica of my room back home. And I mean exact. Right down to the stain on the bedside table."

She looked up at Emma, trying to read how the other woman was understanding all of this. "So, behind that door, could be whatever you're most familiar with, or what you most want it to be. And you can change it, just by thinking about what else you'd want. My Michiru's created a bottomless wardrobe in our room." She chuckled a bit, thinking of the clothing in both closets in their room. Even though the room could accommodate whatever they desired, some of Michiru's things still ended up in her closet.

Even though they never spoke, Emma wondered if she could reach out to them with her powers. Through images, even. Maybe she'd try it out when she finally came across one.

"Psychic?" That was new. Oh, psychic powers existed in Emma's world. Hell, she was living proof of that. "Wow, that's kind of cool," she admitted. "Makes you feel more at home, I guess?" She didn't exactly understand the reason for this place, but if it provided the comforts of home, then she supposed it wasn't terrible.

It was a lot for Emma to take in, but it was making sense to her. "Huh. A bottomless wardrobe, I could use one of those" she nodded, chuckling and then taking a moment to steady herself. "I guess we're going to find out what's behind door number one now," Emma commented, taking her time to unlock the door and open it. It was almost as if she was afraid to find out what it looked like.

"Or something," Haruka said, referring to Emma's comment of the Planet trying to make them feel at home. "It seems more like twisting the knife already in your chest to me." Reminders of what they couldn't have, where they all should be. The planet was toying with them all. Still, if Emma wanted to try and make the best of it, Haruka shouldn't try and take that away from her. She might cope better that way.

Haruka shook her head at the comment about the bottomless wardrobe. "I've never understood that desire," she admitted. "I'd rather have an endless garage, full of nice cars." She smirked. Maybe the planet had a garage somewhere. She should look into that later. If the place really gave you what you wanted, then Haruka should be able to drive all the cars she'd drooled over in the racing magazines for the last few years, right? As Emma reached out to open her door, Haruka shifted, trying to peer inside without looking like she was curious about what the interior would be. "Is it okay?" she asked.
