Day 13: Research and a chance encounter
Who: Illyana and Elminster
What: trying to figure out exactly what is going on
Where: the library
When: Day 13, early afternoon
Rating: PG-13 for now, just to be safe
Status: complete

Illyana hadn't left her room much since her arrival in the middle of the hurricane two days previously. She'd really only ventured out for food. Clark had told her, when she'd arrived, that he'd tried changing his room into a way home, with little success. She'd thought perhaps with her magical abilities that she could have some better luck, and had spent any time she wasn't sleeping or eating involved in trying to attune her limited magical abilities with those of her room. Unfortunately, she'd had about as much luck as Clark had with her efforts. It was like anytime the Planet felt she might be even sort of onto something, it would change the nature of its energies, and she'd be back to square one.

Frustration led to her all but destroying the room several times and having to concentrate to make it return to a habitable state. The last time she'd lashed out and leveled her furniture, it had taken a good hour's meditation and concentration to make anything return to an undamaged state. It was like the Planet was punishing her for breaking her toys. It did not leave Illyana in any sort of good mood.

She decided to see if the library had any books on magic that might be able to help her. She'd exhausted her own, considerably hefty, knowledge and abilities, and was hoping that she'd find a new approach to try. She refused to believe that everyone was really trapped her permanently. If she could even open up a tiny speck of a gateway to Limbo, she'd be able to teleport off the Planet, and probably take others with her. And with the help of the Professor and the other telepaths at the school, she'd be able to use Limbo as a base point for taking the others back to their own dimensions. At least, that was what she hoped.

Illyana was pleased that the weather was much better than it had been on the day she arrived. Maybe if her research went well, she'd take advantage of it and go for a swim in the ocean. She wouldn't be able to stay out for long in the horrible heat, but being back near some kind of nature would probably do her mood a world of good. Maybe she'd venture out even if her research didn't go as well as she wanted. She entered the library and looked around. There were a few people here and there, sitting and reading or perusing the shelves. She wasn't sure she was quite ready to disturb anyone, though. She couldn't guarantee that everyone would be as understanding as Clark.

She headed for the shelves upon shelves of books, scanning the plaques on the sides of the bookcases for the topic of her choice. Finding the magic section, she headed down the aisle and began looking over the various titles for anything that might be helpful.

Elminster had come to the library once again, though this time he had a different goal in mind. He had been experimenting with various spells to see which the planet allowed him to use. It had come to his attention that teleportation magic which confined itself to locations on the Planet were allowed. Which had gotten him thinking about extra-planar travel. If he could slip into the Astral Plane or even, he shuddered at the thought, the Plane of Shadow, he and as many people who wanted to come could escape the Planet.

To that end, he had ensconced himself in the magic section of the library, attempting to find out if the Planet even had an Astral or a Shadow plane to escape into. He looked up as he herd someone come towards him, seeing the young blond woman entering the magic section. He could feel even from here that this young girl had magical gifts, and decided that another ally couldn't hurt.

"Greetings, young one. Come to do some magical research?" He said as he half-smiled at her.

Illyana looked up, startled, at the greeting. She hadn't been expecting to find anyone else in this section of the library. She took in the man's appearance and extended her senses. He didn't read as evil, but he had a strong presence of magic about him, which both put Illyana more at ease and raised her guard. Perhaps he'd be able to help her.

"Hello," she said, offering a smile of her own. "Yes, I have." She offered the older gentleman her hand. "Illyana Rasputin. I just arrived here two days ago." Clark had said he'd been on the Planet for something like a week. She wondered how long this man had been here. If he'd been here longer than she had, perhaps he'd have more insight as to how things worked here.

"Elminster, sage of Shadowdale" he said, taking her extended hand. He paused for a moment, concentrating on a spell. He then moved the book he was reading from his lap onto his conjured floating disc. Looking back at the young woman, he thought that she didn't look like any of the mages he had previously met. But, then again, none of the people he had maet so far in Mirage resembled anyone he had met previously.

"Anything I can help you out with? I was regareded as quite the fount of magical knowledge in my own world."

Illyana had never heard of Shadowdale, but that didn't necessarily mean anything. Being ruler of Limbo, she was well aware of other dimensions, and wouldn't be surprised to find out that Shadowdale wasn't in her own. She watched his book float in midair on a little disc with interest. If he could use his magic so casually, it must mean he was powerful.

When he made his offer of help, Illyana had to fight back a grin. This was exactly what she wanted. But appearing too eager might put the older man off, and might make her look less professional. Instead, she smiled with confidence. "Actually, if you don't mind, there is," she said. "I'm looking for anything that might relate to the properties of magic and magical energies on this world. I've been thinking that if I can figure out how the Planet's natural energies work, I can figure out how to work with them and get back some of the power I lost when I was brought here." Not having access to Limbo cut her off at the knees, magically, and she wasn't happy about it. It was almost worse than being trapped by mutant inhibitor collars back home. An inhibitor collar cut off everything; the Planet left her just a taste of what she was capable of, which made it all the worse because she knew she should be able to do so much more.

Elminster looked around at the books surrounding him and tried to locate some of the magical theory textbooks he had browsed earleier. Finding one, he moved it magically to her.

"I have a theory. I think that we're still connected to our original source of magical powers, whatever that may be, but our powers are diminished and therefor weaker. There have been occaisions when spells have been blocked to me, which makes me think the Planet does take an active interest in us and our magic. I once tried to see all the active magic around me in this place and was left blinded for several minutes."

Illyana took the book from its place in midair and opened it. She leafed through it, just skimming, not really reading, but saw enough to know it was worth reading properly. She listened to Elminster's theory, finding it to make a lot of sense, especially given the nature of her own abilities.

"That's exactly what's happened to me," she said, nodding. "I can't use my best...spell, my teleportation, because it's tied to my Otherplace, which is not in this dimension. And my powers are very much tied in with Otherplace, Limbo, but they can still work here. It makes me think that there is still a link, but I can't access it." It would fit with the Planet taking an interest in them, just keeping her connected enough so that she'd be interesting, but not so much that she could actually escape from it. The idea of being blinded by the sheer force and volume of active magical energies was a little alarming, if she was honest with herself, but knowing there was that much raw power with the potential to be tapped made her itch to try synching with it again.

"Interesting. I draw my power from a magical energy field called The Weave, created by the goddess of magic, Mystra, from my homw world. I've been doing research into the cosmology of the Planet. Trying to see if there are other planes of existance here, in case I can transition to them in order to help us all return home." He sighed and continued, "But I've had no luck at all yet."

It pleased Illyana to no end that she'd been thinking along the same lines as this elder mage. Perhaps Belasco hadn't been as bad a teacher as she'd wanted to believe. Horrible person, yes, but he was the one who, with his twisted methods, had shaped her into a magic user. Or perhaps it was Storm's teachings that led her on this path. She'd much prefer that idea. Either way, she nodded at Elminster to show she was following along and understanding him.

"I haven't tried accessing the Astral Plane yet," she admitted. "I can usually do it at home, when I'm not in Limbo. But I've been so focused on just opening the gateway there even the tiniest bit, I haven't given anything else much attention." It sounded like Elminster's powers came from a much better place than her own did. He didn't say one way or the other, but Illyana assumed this Mystra must be more benevolent than Belasco. Anyone had to be more benevolent than Belasco.

She glanced down, wondering if the idea the popped into her head would be too much of an imposition. Elminster clearly knew more about magic and its workings than she did, despite her years of training. She was still relatively young, after all, and hadn't had the best training. She wondered if he'd like an apprentice. But, was it too bold to ask such a thing?

"Limbo?" asked Elminster. He wondered vaugly if it was the same Limbo which connected to Faerun.

"There's a plane in my reality also called Limbo. In my world, it is chaos made manifest. Is your Limbo a similar place?" As he asked, he realized with a start that the book currently floating next to him was a copy of an ancient tome from Faerun. Indeed, many of the books he had been studying on magical theory had come from his home.

"Tell me, do you recogniz any of these tomes?" asked Elminster, with a sinking feeling. He had another theory that all the books here came from the worlds of those who had been brought here.

Could her Limbo be related to the Limbo Elminster spoke about? Illyana doubted it, but you never knew. It was a dimension out of synch with the one she considered "home". "It sounds very similar to my Limbo," she said. "I've been trying to bring more order to it, to keep the demons and other dark creatures under control, but it's proving more difficult than I'd thought." Of course, that part of her wanted the chaos and the darkness inherent in the dimension wasn't helping any. Belasco had tied her to the darker side of the realm quite thoroughly.

Then, the mage changed topics rather suddenly. Illyana blinked, then turned to look at the books he'd indicated. She hadn't really read the titles before she'd spoken with him, just skimmed the spines. Now that she looked more closely, however, there were several titles that were familiar to her peppered among books she'd never seen before. Most of the ones she recognized looked like ones she'd studied while under Belasco's thumb, volumes from his own personal library. She nodded. "I've studied from some of these," she said. She pulled one of the more innocuous ones from the shelf and offered it to Elminster. "This one, for example. My...former teacher...had this in his collection." The book contained mostly information on teleportation and binding spells. Very little to do with blood rituals or the darker incantations he'd been so fond of. She tilted her head to the side. "Why do you ask?"

"I was afraid of that" he said, sighing. "Most of these others are familiar to me. I think that the Planet has just populated the library with books from our own respective worlds. I doubt we will find much to aid us in our quest to understand the workings of this strange place here." With that, he sent the book he had been reading back to the shelf it came from with a thought.

"I think we must resort to a slightly less accurate way of gathering information. Tell me, do you have any spells that might be considered forms of divination? I have tried Scrying and it does indeed work outside the confines of certain areas of the Resort."

"So this Planet only gives us access to information we already know?" Illyana asked. It wasn't really a question, but more of a summary of what he'd said. The incredulity in her voice might make the mage think it was a question, though. She looked at the shelf again, eyes narrowing. There were indeed a lot of books that Belasco had from his own library, but she also recognized one that the Professor had managed to borrow from Stephen Strange for her. And the titles she wasn't familiar with were ones Elminster said came from his world.

"Since we can ask for just about whatever we want, do you think asking the Planet for the books we want would help?" she asked. Almost immediately, however, she laughed at that idea. Sure, the Planet would just give them the information they needed to go home. Like that would happen.

Illyana looked back at the elder mage when he began to speak again. "I can Scry," she said. It didn't work as well outside of Limbo, but she sure as hell could give it a try here. She had another spell as well, but one she was hesitant to use, since it was based in blood magic. She didn't want to resort to that unless she had to. Blood magic called to the demonic side of her, and she didn't want it to gain more of a hold than it already had over her. "I haven't had the chance to really try Scrying here yet. What have you seen?"

"You can also scry?" asked the Sage of Shadowdale. He had met few people here with that particular skill, even the other magic users. He thought back to the days he had spent in his room during the hurricane, thinking back to his attempts to scry.

"Mostly, I saw these buildings which surround us. In this way I was able to learn my way around the resort during the hurricane. As far as other places, I have seen only desert. The rest of the Planet seems to be barren, which is odd. You would think something, or someone this powerfully magical would be more full of life."

The hurricane. That horrible, horrible hurricane. "That's when I got here, during that hurricane," Illyana said, thinking back a couple of days to when she first arrived. "It wasn't fun."

She blinked as Elminster described the planet's surface. "There's nothing? How is that possible?" she blurted out. She hadn't thought before she'd spoken. How would he know, seriously? But really, how could that be? Even in Limbo, which was relatively bland, there was life. Magically twisted and demonic life, but life of a sort. "All its power must be focused on keeping us here, in this one place, and giving us all of this." She spread her arms wide to indicate the resort. What other explanation could there be? Unless...

"Maybe it's dormant?" she suggested. "Waiting for something to happen before it spreads to the rest of the Planet's surface?" She wasn't quite sure what she was saying, but all that energy had to be attached to more life than what was currently around, according to Elminster. Maybe the Planet was hibernating, or in a fallow season, or something of that nature. She really wished she'd been able to study with Dr. Strange now. She could just bet he'd have an idea of what was going on.

"You arrived during the hurricane? You have my sympathies. It was one of the most fierce storms I have seen, in all my 1200 years of life." Indeed, thought Elminster, the storm had seemed as if Talos himself was reaching through dimensions and manifesting on Mirage. But then again, if the old god of storms had come, it was doubtful if any of them would be alive anymore.

"It does seem possible that the planet may be dormant, or something of that nature. If only there were a Druid here, they would be able to tell us. As it is, it is one of the few disciplines that I have not studied. You do not know anyone studying the druidic arts do you?"

Illyana smiled at Elminster's kind words. They were little comfort, if she were honest with herself, but it was, in a way, good to know the storm had been as bad as she'd thought at the time. "We don't have storms that bad where I come from," she said. "At least, not rain storms. Sometimes, when I was little, we'd have blizzards that nearly covered the house with snow, but mama and papa knew how to handle that." And considering that Illyana had been to Florida maybe once in her life, and there had been no hurricane there when she'd gone, the experience had been entirely new.

She listened to his question carefully, trying to work out what a druid exactly did. Something to do with the earth, that much she could figure out. Illyana had never met a druid, but she did know someone who had been able to heal the land. "I knew a woman once, when I was younger. One of my teachers." She glanced at the floor, remembering how Storm had tried to teach her to heal Limbo, and the terrible way Belasco had repaid her kindness. "She...died...a few years ago, though. She tried to teach me how to work with the land, but it never came easily to me. My skills are elsewhere." She sincerely hoped Elminster wouldn't press her for more details about what powers she was actually proficient with.

"Indeed, I am sorry to hear that." As Elminster began to intone a short prayer to Kelemvore, God of Death and Judge of the Dead, he realized that the gods of his home more than likely could not hear him there, and would most likely not have authority over this unnamed teacher.

Her mention of her parents stirred ancient memories in his mind, of his own parents. They were the royal family of a small country called Athalantar, killed by a mage-lord. He had initially sworn to never do magic and hunt those who did. But a chance encounter with the goddess of magic had changed all that. He had not thought about those ancient times in some long while. To shake his mind loose from the ancient memories, he changed the topic.

"Tell me something of your world. Is magic the norm there, or a gift rarer than the most precious gem? I have met people from both sorts of worlds so far."

"Thank you," Illyana said. It had been a while since she'd thought of the Storm she'd grown up with in Limbo. She could feel tears in her eyes, but she blinked and tried to hold them back. She hated showing vulnerability in front of others.

When Elminster asked her about magic at home, she smiled. "In Limbo, it's everywhere, but in the normal world I come from, it's pretty rare. Not quite as rare as some gifts, though." She wondered how the mage would react to the idea of mutants. "For instance, none of my family can use magic except for me. But my brother and I also have gifts that aren't related to magic." Thinking about that, she frowned. "This Planet won't let me use mine, though, since it deals with teleportation, moving from one location to another in an instant, and I have to go through my Limbo in order to do it." She'd always wondered about that, whether it was because Belasco had tied her to the Otherplace, or because that was the first alternate dimension she'd encountered. "My older brother Piotr can cover himself in skintight armor and grow stronger than a normal human, but it isn't magic that gives him the power. It's just something some people are born with on my world."

She looked up at Elminster. "Are there any people like that where you come from?"

((OOC: Sorry for the delay, for some reason I haven't been getting notifications via email.))

"Some in my world have gifts from their bloodline. There are those who inherit magical abilities. Each race has things that they are skilled at as well. For example, there are those who are descended from dragons might have wings. The Drow, dark elves, have the ability to generate darkness. Gnomes have an exceptional ability with illusions. In addition, there are those of us who have encounters with deities, and have been changed by them. Like myself."

He scribed Mystra's sigil in the air, a path surrounded by 7 stars. "I am the Chosen of Mystra, goddess of magic in my world."

Illyana smiled as Elminster spoke. It seemed that he wasn't as put off by her mutant powers as she'd feared he might be. It sounded like mutants, or whatever they were called in his world, were treated much more fairly than they were in her own.

Her eyes widened as he drew the sign in the air. He was the chosen of a goddess? So, he was sort of like Kitty's friend, Captain Britain, since he was supposedly the chosen of Merlin, at least the way Kitty had explained it. "We have people like that on my world, too," she said. "I've never met one, though." She looked up at Elminster. "What is the goddess Mystra like?"

Elminster smiled, remembering the first incarnation of Mystra he had known. The one he had gotten to know intimately.

"I have known two incarnations of the goddess. The first was the one who Chose me, helped me cultivate my powers and overthrow the tyrannical rulers in my homeland. She died during the period in our history called the Time of Troubles. During this period, the gods were cast down to the Material Plane. She died trying to ascend back to her realm. The new incarnation was a mage named Midnight. She tends the magical energy field called the Weave which permeates the world I come from. It's how everyone accesses magic. She is the fount of all magic in Faerun. As her chosen, I help further some of her better causes. But, I have been cut off from her since coming here. The only thing I have is the echo of her presence in that I can access the Weave here to cast some of my spells."

He sighed, thinking once again of his home in Faerun. He wondered how the world fared without him. Shaking his head, he continued "What about those of your world? You may not have met any but you have heard of some, correct?"

Illyana smiled sadly at the mage as he spoke of his home. It sounded like the gods there had very close ties with their chosen, perhaps like she'd had with Storm growing up in Limbo.

"I've heard of a few people like that," she said in response to Elminster's question. "My best friend Kitty recently started working with a man who's the chosen of Merlin, one of the...." She paused as she tried to figure out how to describe a being she didn't understand. "One of the forces who protects the land of Britain on my world. Brian, Kitty's friend, goes by Captain Britain, and he's been given enhanced physical abilities, and flight, in order to protect the people of Britain from evil." Almost like a mutant, but not quite, which was amusing, since his sister was a mutant.

Illyana sighed and turned toward the bookshelves again. "I wonder if it will do any good trying to find useful information in this lot, if it's all books that aren't native to this world," she said.

"We can but try, my dear." said Elminster. "Knowledge is never a waste, even if it not what you seek. I've know bards whose knowledge of random subjects have saved their compatriots."

He looked around at the various books around them, and took down one she had indicated as being from her world. A new idea had occurred to him, and he wanted to take the opportunity to run it by her before proceeding.

"Besides, I've just had an idea. If each of the magic users here learns how each others' magic works, we may be able to pool our powers and perhaps exert some control over our own destinies again. I've heard some psions, those with psionic or mind abilities, speak of something similar they can do called a Metaconcert, where they pool their reserves of power in order to manifest more powerful abilities. What do you think? Is this possible?"

That was very true. Random "trivia" could come in handy sometimes. It had certainly helped her out on more than one occasion with the New Mutants.

Illyana listened to Elminster's thoery, intrigued. She tried to think back and remember whether she'd seen the telepaths work in similar ways among the X-Men. She was pretty sure Piotr had told her something about combining powers or joining minds. "I think it's possible," she said at last. "At least, I'm pretty sure it is where I come from. If the psychics can do it, why can't we?" She looked back at the bookshelf and took another of the books Elminster had mentioned as being from his world, to accompany the one he'd already let her see. "We'll never know unless we actually try it."

Elminster closed his eyes, and tried to remember everything that the female psion had told him about her craft, that night long ago in a tavern.

"All right. Here's what we do. I need you to manifest your magic in the rawest form you can. I'll use my partial control of what there is of the Weave here to control it and shape it between the two of us. With that, we might just be able to find out a thing or two about this place."

He began crafting in his mind the spell he would need to capture, control and share their magics.

"Right here and now?" Illyana asked, glancing around the library. "That might be dangerous." Manifesting her magic in its rawest form meant she'd have to give up some of her control over the darker forces inside her. She wasn't sure exactly how Elminster would react to the Darkchylde, should she take over. Hell, she wasn't sure how the demon would react to what he wanted to do. Without realizing she was doing so, she took a small step backward.

"Maybe we should do a little more research first? Read up on each other's magics and how they work, and then find a space that would be more conducive to this type of spell-casting. Somewhere with fewer people, or with better reinforcements, just in case something goes awry." For one who'd been gung-ho about the idea only moments ago, Illyana knew she sounded evasive. She just hoped Elminster would take it as concern for the others rather than fear at the realization of exactly what "sharing magic" meant for her.

Elminster opened his eyes again, looking at the woman. She seemed somewhat nervous about the prospect of combining forces. Ah well, he thought to himself, I can't expect her to trust me instantly.

"You're probably right. It would be a good idea to continue our research and know more before we attempt it. And backups would be an excellent idea. Already some of my spells have reacted oddly in this place. Tell me again, which of these books deal with the world where you come from?"

It seemed like he thought her concern was only for safety. Illyana mentally breathed a sigh of relief. "These here," she said, indicating the shelf on which she'd recognized the books from Belasco's library. "And these." The shelf below. She hefted the books he'd given her as if testing their weight. She'd probably have plenty here to keep her occupied for several days.

"I should probably start reading," she said, glancing down at the tomes Elminster had given her. "I think these will be really helpful. Thank you." She shifted the books in her arms again, freeing one hand. She offered it to him. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Elminster. I'm glad there are other magic-users here to talk to." She offered him a friendly smile as well as her hand.

Elminster took the offered hand, returning her smile with a smile of his own.

"It was my pleasure. Always glad to help out another magic-user. Yes, I have a few experiments I must try before too long." He got up to go, looking back over his shoulder for a moment.

"Thank you again. You've started me on a new train of thought."

Illyana watched the elder mage go, then glanced down at the books in her arms. She had a lot of reading to do. With a smile, she turned to head back to her room. Certain things were better read in private, where she could actually test the spells as she studied them. And, she could start figuring out a way to keep her darker impulses in check, so that when she and Elminster did try to combine their magics, the Darkchylde wouldn't go out of control and ruin it all.
