WHO: Marcus & Tonks
WHAT: Another attempt to escape?
WHEN: Morning, Day 10
WHERE: Starts in the dining room, goes outside
STATUS: Complete

Thinking the storm would blow over quickly on Day 9, he had decided to focus on some things he had been neglecting. His morning had been taken up primarily with meditation, and with reading of Minbari scriptures. It wasn't so much that he was religious, it was mostly just that he had gotten so used to it during Ranger training, it felt almost wrong not to keep it up. After braving the storm to get to the diner for lunch, he had headed to the gym to practice with his fighting pike. He still, deep down, didn't trust in Mirage's benevolence, and wanted to keep himself ready for whatever might come up. Like this hurricane, for example. If the Planet was so eager to have everyone get along and have a pleasant time, why would it throw a life-threatening storm at them?

Today, on Day 10, when Marcus woke up and saw that the storm was still raging, he felt more sure that the Planet was messing with its captives. With that fire at his heels, he found himself more motivated than he had in days to find a way out. Recently, he had been getting soft, practicing in the gym, swimming with Legolas. Today it was time to get back with the program. After a quick breakfast of cereal, he headed over to the large dining room windows to make a plan of attack. The storm certainly still looked fierce. Was he really going to head out in that?

As he turned away from the window, having resolved to just head out into the storm and see what he could find, he noticed a familiar face sitting at a nearby nook. Perhaps she would like to join his foolhardy trek. He strode over to where she was sitting.

"Well, Good Morning!"

The witch, her hair very long and very purple today, had been having an odd couple of days, even compared to normal. She'd spent much time in her room, pretending she wasn't avoiding Elminster and any possible reprecussions of what had happened between them. It was beyond her what had actually happened, but it had felt rather like being the Imperius curse. Only not exactly, because she had felt like herself, only how she would feel if she was actually in love with someone. It made her head hurt to try and figure it out, so mostly, she'd just hidden out in her room and tried to convince herself everything would somehow be okay. Maybe Elminster was the sort who regularly took people into his bed? Maybe nothing would come of this?

Either way, she did need to eat, so she'd ventured out from her dorm room, into the storm that was still raging. If anything, she thought, it seemed to have gotten worse since the last time she'd been out in it, to greet Jigen. When she reached the restaurant, she'd picked a table far off to the side and hoped that no one would notice her. She had seen Marcus walk in, of course, but had buried herself in her oatmeal. For once, and this was truly remarkable, she didn't feel like talking to anyone. She'd greeted Jigen, of course, and that had gone reasonably well. She'd gotten into the swing of things. But the more days passed, the more stupid she felt about the whole thing. It just wasn't like her to have acted like that.

Unfortunately, Marcus had noticed her, and she simply did not have it in her to be deliberately rude to a friend. So she took a deep breath, pasted a smile she hoped was convincing on her face, and decided that if she could be friendly with a Japanese stranger, she could be friendly with someone who was actually her friend.

"Oh, hullo, Marcus..."

She poked idly at her food with her spoon, and decided that just did not sound quite cheerful enough. So she tried again.

"Whatcha up to today?"

Marcus smiled at Tonks, but he couldn't help feeling there was something odd about her expression. It was almost like she was distracted, not really as excited to see him as she was acting. It had been a few days since he'd seen her. He wondered what she'd been up to. He hoped she would tell him.

"I was just planning my day, actually. I'm hoping to get up to the same sort of fun we usually get up to. Are you in?"

Determined to get to the bottom of things, or at least cheer her up, Marcus sat down at Tonks' table. Waving off a golem waiter, he watched the witch's expressions carefully. Whatever had happened to her, he was sure he could be the kind of friend she needed.

"So, what have you been up to lately? I haven't seen you around."

Well, that gave her the opportunity to bring it out into the open, if she wanted to.

Very carefully, she didn't sigh as he sat down. Maybe, actually, it would be a good thing for her to have someone around. She'd been thinking way too much, and that tended to lead to her mind just going around in circles. It might be fun to derail her thoughts for awhile, maybe even have some fun.

"Of course, Marcus! Truth be told, I haven't exactly been spending enough time trying to get out of here..."

Deciding that she wasn't really hungry, she pushed her bowl of oatmeal aside and focused her attention on the Ranger. His question made her laugh softly. Somehow, she didn't see Marcus as the sort of person who would do what she had done, and doubted he would understand.

"No, it's just that... things have been sort of strange around here, and I suppose I was hiding out and hoping they would go back to normal."

Marcus nodded understandingly, noting her general demeanour and the way she pushed away her food. Something was definitely bothering her. Well, if he couldn't cheer her up, he didn't know who could, though there could of course be someone else he wasn't aware of...

"Tell me about it. And you're not the only one hiding away. I spent almost all of yesterday in my room and in the gym. I told myself I was keeping myself ready, but I think I was just spinning my wheels. Still, who was ready to go out in that mess yesterday? And after that craziness three days ago! I don't suppose you escaped unscathed? I almost had my legs chopped off by a particularly aggressive suitress. Seemed she wanted me to hold still!"

Marcus laughed now at the memory of his battle with Faith, but it really had been frightening to be fighting for his life and losing to a would-be rapist smaller than him.

Unaware of his exact thoughts, but observant enough to know he was watching her curiously, she made a game effort at her normal cheery self and pushed her food completely away from her so that she wouldn't be tempted to play with it anymore. She laughed softly, even though his question sent a surge of alarm through her. But she wasn't going to lie, it wasn't her style.

"No, I didn't exactly come out of the whole thing unscathed. Let's leave it at that, shall we?"

She looked at him, somewhat alarmed as he discribed his situation. At least, in her case, they'd both been willing participants. She was pretty sure that, no matter how 'in love' she'd been, she wouldn't have attempted to rape Elminster.

"Merlin, that's something, isn't it? Makes mine look a little better... did she... I mean, did you..."

She blushed and shook her head, muttering softly under her breath. "Never mind..." It really wasn't any of her business, and she was being very nosy. It wasn't any of her concern if he'd gotten it on with whoever the woman was that had been pursuing him. He was, after all, a very attractive man.

Marcus noticed he'd gotten Tonks's attention with his story. Well, that wasn't a surprise. It was quite dramatic. He also noticed that she was still uncomfortable. And seemed more uncomfortable, actually when talking about whatever had happened to her three days ago. Of course, it really wasn't any of his business what had happened to her. He wanted to know, though. Especially after her mysterious comments.

"So something did happen to you, then? Can't say I'm surprised. It seems like half the people I run into have an embarrassing story about it. I suspect the other half just aren't sharing. Can't blame them, really.

"To answer your question, no. Despite having incredible speed and strength for a person smaller than me, and despite almost besting me in one-on-one combat, my Nemesis was not able to... conquer me. I was able to escape by turning and running like a frightened child, I'm not ashamed to say, at least not to you."

Marcus smiled, still trying to cheer Tonks up. Part of him burned to ask her if she had... been conquered, but he played the gentleman and restrained himself. Besides, did he really want to know? Actually, once he thought about it, he decided he did want to know if she had, but not who with.

The purple-haired woman felt a surge of strange feeling go through her at his admission, something that she was able to name as relief before she brushed it all aside, deciding that wasn't a place she wanted to go. It really was none of her business... but she was amused by the image of this small woman nearly outfighting Marcus. She'd seen him fight, after all, and he was really good. And the mental images his words invoked had the corners of her lips quirking up in an almost-smile. She probably would have laughed, but didn't want to offend her friend.

"She must have been quite something, then, to be able to fight you and come out on top..."

She coughed at the unintentional double meaning her words carried, and blushed once more as she rose to her feet. This conversation had been quite far enough, and she really didn't want to go into it any further. She'd asked some personal questions, he'd be within his rights to ask her the same ones, but she really hoped he didn't.

"So... what did you have in mind for today? I don't think we should go out in that... though if you want to, I'm game."

It had been an embarrassing story, but Marcus found he hadn't minded telling it to Tonks. He trusted her, he realized. Besides, it looked like he might be getting somewhere. He could swear he saw her almost smile. Nevertheless, he sensed, as she did, that that topic had been exhausted without going into more details, and that was something they both seemed uncomfortable with.

"She was something else alright. I wonder what she's normally like."

He let the obvious comment pass, and focused on the topic he had originally come to her with.

"Well, I hadn't really formulated a master plan for the day, but I do think we should go out in that. Who knows what it's hiding? This storm is a big deal. I'm sure of it. Why would the Planet start a storm like this for us? Sure, it might be natural, but how much here is actually natural? Is it just a coincidence that it shows up the day after we arrive in this paradise? I don't know, but I bet we can learn something by exploring it ourselves."

She wasn't happy that he'd turned the girl down, or anything. It wasn't like she actually cared. She just had wanted to know because he was her friend, and that was all there was to that. Or so she firmly told herself as she started pulling herself up from the booth she'd been occupying.

"Well, I expect she would be too ashamed to show herself. I know I..."

She blinked, coughed, and nearly stumbled over absolutely nothing as she rose to her feet. When she recovered, she was more than happy to change the subject. Although his plan had her wondering about his sanity, it was exactly the sort of wild adventure that appealed to her.

"Alright, then, I'm game. I agree, it might be quite a good time to learn things, while the Planet expects us all to be cowering inside and hiding from the dreadful weather. So, let's do this thing. Do you have a specific destination in mind, or would you just like to sort of wander and see what happens?"

Marcus decided it was really time to drop the topic of the amorous adventures of Day 7. Dancing around Tonks' story was clearly making both of them uncomfortable. He was very glad to see the spark in her eye as she expressed her interest in his plan. He knew it was a crazy idea, but he'd also expected her to like it. After all, he was fairly certain she'd positively enjoyed herself during the encounter with the wild cougar.

"Well, I have to say I haven't really explored this new area very much. I went for a swim in the bay the other day, and I would be fascinated to see how far one can sail away from here, but I really truly think it would be asking too much to get in a boat on a day like this. So here's my plan. Let's head the other way, inland. We know there was a desert surrounding the Dude Ranch, right? I mean, that's the impression I got from other people's reports, so let's find out if there's a desert here too. If there is, is there a hurricane there? If so, what does that mean?"

Now that he was getting down to business and putting his head together with Tonks', Marcus was getting very excited. This was going to be a grand adventure indeed.

Despite her initial lack of interest in being found, she was now discovering, or rather, rediscovering, just how much fun it was to be around the Ranger who had become her friend. He had a way of making things seem much more bearable, actually, and his enthusiasm for getting off planet sparked something that rekindled her own.

As she led the way over to the door out of the restaurant and towards the nasty rain, she had a sudden thought. She turned around, drawing her wand, and pointed it at him, directly at his face, in fact.

"Hold still.... Impervius!"

Then, she switched to his cloak, and when that was done, performed the same spell on her face, shirt, jeans, and shoes. It, of course, made them repel water, which was going to be very useful given the fact that they were about to head into a torrential downpour. When it was done, she raised her eyebrow at him and grinned.

"Anything else you want to protect before we go out there?"

Marcus was delighted with the way Tonks had caught his enthusiasm for the expedition and had headed straight out into the storm. He was surprised, however, when she stopped suddenly, turned around, and pointed her wand right in his face. After she had cast her spells on him and herself, he expected to feel some sort of tingle all over, but nothing seemed any different.

"What sort of protection is it? Am I now invulnerable to bullets and other piercing objects?"

He considered if there was anything else he wanted protection for, but figured his cloak pretty much covered it all.

"Oh, wait! What if we have to fight and the cloak gets in the way? I might have to take it off for manoeuverability! Why don't you protect my uniform?"

Eager and trusting, he moved his cloak aside, so the witch had clear access to his Ranger uniform, which he wore as usual. He had never heard of this Impervius spell before, but it sounded beneficial.

She shook her head at his question as she pointed her wand at his uniform and repeated the spell once more.

"No, that would be sort of silly, since we can't be killed here. Much simpler than that, actually... your clothing and face will repel water. It might keep us from drowning, and we should be able to see more now."

With those spells in place, she figured they were ready. Stowing her wand in the back pocket of her jeans, and a little surprised by how easily he had cheered her up, she threw open the front door and was, predictably, nearly thrown off her feet as the strong wind blew in.

"Well, let's go!"

Marcus had to agree that Tonks' spell was really handy. He was continually amazed by the variety and efficacity of her magical repertoire. Spending time as he did, or had, in spaceships and spaceports, Marcus was used to having to not take for granted a lot of very fancy technology. Tonks's magic, on the other hand, hardly needed any technology at all. It was mind boggling. Marcus felt uncomfortable admitting it, but even with his Ranger training Tonks could easily best him with her arsenal.

Opening his eyes wide at the bracing gust of wind that immediately pelted them, Marcus gathered himself and threw himself forward into the storm. He knew they were probably crazy, but this really was the only thing to be done, as far as he was concerned. He only hoped they would be strong enough to walk more than a few paces.

The storm hadn't gotten any better since the last time she'd been out in it. The spell she'd cast had made the water avoid them, but not the sand that was whipped around by the wind. Simply out of self-preservation, or so she told herself, she linked her arm through her friends. Together, they staggered forward.

Talking wasn't really possible over the roaring wind and the crash of thunder, so she didn't bother. She'd need to scream, and even then, she wasn't sure he'd catch all of the words. So she contented herself with just walking alongside him. It was nice to be back with him, actually. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed him, in the midst of everything that had happened.

It was hard to tell where they were supposed to go, with the wind and rain blocking their vision, so she pulled out her wand, shouted the command word, and it obediantly spun so it pointed North. With an idea of her direction, she bent over nearly double, held onto her friend tightly, and headed off in the direction they needed to go.

Marcus, though he knew going out in a hurricane was a dangerous proposition, wasn't completely prepared for the battering he got from the vicious weather. Nevertheless, with Tonks's spell and his cloak, he was able to protect himself from the worst of the storm's attacks. When Tonks linked her arm through his, he thought it a very sensible gesture. Didn't want them losing each other in the mess. After all, it was so nice to see each other after days of not.

Marcus watched Tonks do a trick with her wand, but wasn't sure what it was about. He attempted to ask her, but quickly realized the storm left no real verbal options. It was going to have to be hand signals and non-verbal communication, then. Too bad she didn't know any of the Ranger signals. He would have to teach her some, later.

After her wand break, Tonks seemed confident, and Marcus held her tightly in return as he let her choose the direction. She had chosen to go North along the beach, which he figured was as good a direction as any.

It seemed to take forever to walk what normally would have only taken a short distance. The wind seemed determined to push them back again, and regardless of her protection spells, she knew with one amused look over at Marcus that they where going to look rather messy and dishevelled by the time they got back.

Of course, that was assuming something pretty major, that they would, in fact, be able to find their way back. But she was confident that they would, because after all, she was an Auror and he was a Ranger. She'd learned enough about him to know part of what that mean, and she felt safe around him despite the fact that he was undoubtedly a Muggle.

She couldn't look at him for long. For one thing, looking at anything through the long strands of her own purple hair was pretty much impossible. With a sigh, she concentrated and shortened it drastically, which helped. She felt bad for him, though, he couldn't do the same thing.

Marcus, having never explored a hurricane before, wished he had come better prepared. Next hurricane, he would have to remember to bring goggles, gloves, and a hood. His not-so-short hair was being blown about, whipping him in the face, and being a general nuisance. He was glad for Tonks's impervius spell. Without it, he wasn't sure how far he would have been able to go.

As they passed the beach house where he and Legolas had left their clothes to go swimming, he thought it would be nice to go swimming with Tonks sometime. One never knew what they might find out in the water. He wondered if he would have to wear a bathing-suit to satisfy the modesty of her culture, then blushed a little when that thought led inevitably to thoughts of the young witch swimming naked.

Suddenly aware of the extreme proximity of the woman herself at his side, he swallowed and kept on trudging forward. It was difficult to see far, but he knew they were getting somewhere.

As they struggled along, time after time, one or the other of them was constantly being nearly pulled into the air. The wind was picking up, she thought, which shouldn't have been possible. Her face was starting to feel numb from the constant sand pelting it.

There was no point to this, she realized. Even if she and Marcus did come close to anything, unless they tripped over it, they were not going to see it. With a soft sigh that she knew the Ranger couldn't hear, she stopped and turned to face him. He was doing even worse than she was, because he hadn't been able to change the length of his hair.

She leaned forward, still holding his arm, and pressed herself against him as she spoke directly into his ear, so the wind couldn't steal her words.

"There's no point to this... I'm going back. We can't see anything out here, you know."

Marcus struggled futilely against the wind and rain and blowing sand. Every step he took was like lifting huge weights tied to his feet, and he wouldn't have been able to open his eyes if it hadn't been for Tonks's protective magic.

When the young witch stopped and turned toward him, he wondered what was going on. When she put her lips close to his ear, he wondered why she didn't just use magic to convey her words to him, but he was glad she hadn't. This method was more intimate, as close friends should be, he told himself.

Marcus knew her decision was the right one, though it made him feel defeated. Giving a sigh of frustration, he nodded his head vigorously, so she wouldn't miss it, and turned to head back the way they had come. Still holding her arm, he started to trudge back. Looking around, he wondered how far they had come, but couldn't see more than two metres in the storm.

If he had pointed that fact out, she would have wondered herself why she hadn't just used a spell to amplify her voice to get to him. But it had just seemed like the thing to do, and she didn't think about it all that much. She was relieved when he thought about it, sighed, and then nodded his agreement.

Arm in arm, they made their way back to the building, and since the wind seemed to be coming from all angles at once, it wasn't any easier than it had been to get this far. She supposed that they'd only made it a short distance, but it had taken a long time and she was sore and tired.

When they finally neared the building, she was relieved. This sort of adventure hadn't been as fun as she'd been hoping. She grabbed for the door handle and practically flung herself inside, pulling her friend along with her. When the door was safely shut, she turned to face him.

"Merlin, that was something else! And I thought the weather in London was bad."

Marcus stepped inside the central resort building with a sense of relief, relief from constant battering from all sides and relief from having to strive to prove that he was somehow stronger than a hurricane. Deep inside him, his conviction that he had a stronger will than the Planet was what drove him to keep trying to escape, but clearly he was not going to best Mirage in simple strength. He bent over and shook the sand out of his hair, which was somewhat matted and lank.

"Well, next time we're going to need a little more protection. Perhaps an enclosed vehicle would have been more appropriate. Didn't the plaque say we'd have what we want? Do you hear me, Planet? I want an armoured car with four-wheel drive!"

Marcus was only half-serious, not really expecting Mirage to give him the tools with which he hoped to engineer his own escape. He looked over at Tonks, checking to see if she was unharmed by their excursion. He found he wasn't angry at her for cutting their trip short. After all, it had really been the right call. If anything, he was impressed by her judgement. For all her clumsiness and fun-loving ways, she was really a remarkable woman, wasn't she?

Fairly exhausted from their shared adventure, she leaned against the wall, aching and sore, to catch her breath. She looked at him as he tried to clean his hair with his fingers, and idly wondered how he seemed to be able to manage, and quite well, without magic. Almost lazily, she drew out her wand and pointed it at him.

"Scourgify. There, that's better now, isn't it?"

She watched in satisfaction as all the sand and grit disappeared from his hair, leaving it just as clean as ever. Soft, or at least it looked that way... and why exactly was she sitting here thinking about touching this man's hair, anyway?

"I don't know about Muggle things, really. Would an armored car withstand that, do you think? I think I'd rather just wait until the storm dies down, if it does. If not, well, I guess I'll have to start thinking of more spells to protect us."

They were both assuming there would be a next time, and in her mind, there was no doubt about it. They'd been repelled this time, but she was determined that next time, or the time after, or the time after that... sometime soon, she was going to find a way off this planet, and back home.

Marcus felt like he had cleaned his hair well enough that he could get back to his room and have a shower, and was not in any way expecting Tonks to clean it with a spell. In fact, despite spending much time with her since arriving on Mirage, he still didn't expect most of the magical things she did. Perhaps it would have been easier for his mind to accept if she had been using unfamiliar technologies. Part of his mind still truly believed that magic didn't exist. He wanted to keep that part. He figured it would still be useful when he got back home.

"You just cleaned my hair! That was amazing!" He shook his newly-coifed head. "Actually, the best thing would probably be an armoured car that you protect or enhance with magic. Either way, I know a lot about... muggle technology and you know a lot about magic. I bet if we pooled our expertise we could come up with something the Planet will never be expecting!"

Marcus, too, was speaking as if there was no question that the two of them would be making another attempt. He hardly thought about it now, but they were both so comfortable with their partnership that they almost took it for granted. He would have realized it was a very nice feeling, if he'd been thinking about it.

"Well, that's for another day. Right now, I think I need to head back to my room. Will I see you at the party later?"

Large parts of what the ranger said still passed right over her head, but she was getting used to it. So she just nodded and decided that she would deal with it later. His reaction to her charm to clean his hair amused her, though. Apparently, she was a bit of a mystery to him as well.

"Yeah, I cleaned your hair, I can do that. And I'll take your word for it, and start thinking of ways to protect a weird muggle car thing."

She pushed herself away from the wall, still fairly tired, and concentrated briefly so her hair lengthened again. It was just as purple as ever, but now, there was no need to keep it short to avoid getting it dirty and having it fly around in her face because of the wind.

"Um, right, Marcus. I think I'm off to the pool area for a turn in the hot tub. Yeah, I think I'll be going there, so I'll see you there."

With that, and one more friendly smile and a wave, the purple-haired woman turned and walked away, already thinking about spells that would be best to use against a hurricane.

Marcus ran his fingers through his remarkably clean hair as he watched the purple-haired young witch walk away. The hot tub! Why hadn't he thought of that? If he'd only brought his suit, he could be joining her right now! Maybe he had one in his room. Would that be suspicious, if he joined her in the hot tub after visiting his room? No, of course not. He would just say he'd thought she'd had a great idea. Yeah... but would she still be there?

Walking off in the opposite direction of the pool, Marcus's mind spun as it hadn't spun since he was seventeen. He completely forgot, in his anxiety about bathing etiquette, that there would be spare bathing suits in the changeroom, if he wanted one.
