Part 18
I can feel my precious boy stiffening against my leg once more, broadcasting his distress. I have no doubt that everyone in the room thinks I'm a total bastard. Hell, I'm the first one to admit it, but Alex needs to come completely clean before we could rebuild from his apprehension and abuse. He has to understand that he was not to blame. It is my brutal duty to make sure he gets that message rammed through his thick, impossible head from the get-go or one day I was going to wake up alone and I am not about to let that happen. Not in this lifetime.
My fingers tangle in his silky hair and I tug until his diamond bright, emerald eyes are locked with mine, letting him read the determination I know is on my face.
"Would you consider selling his contract?" Rose asked softly.
The question catches me by surprise.
And judging from the absolute panic in Alex' eyes, it does the same with him. He swallows loudly, his adam's apple stuttering in the long column of his throat.
Not loosening my grip on his hair, I turn my gaze from his distress and lock a passive stare on the other man. "Why would I consider doing that?"
Alex trembles against my legs. His body is strung tight with the tension I know is running through him. I ease up on his hair a bit, allowing him a small bit of movement, but not enough to allow him to look anywhere near the men sitting across from us.
Rose shifts in his seat, his eyes roving over Alex' sheet white features. He draws heavily on the bourbon in his glass as he meets my gaze. "Why don't you ease up on the guy, Skinner? He's been through hell."
A slow, measured smile curves my lips. "Put there by you and your men." I say, using that smile with the profusion of a swordsmen. Rose actually flinches against the impact of my words. It brings a tingle of delight, which I hide under my mask of droll ADA.
At my feet, the tension has gotten the best of my sweet pet. His hands flutter restlessly. I can hear that soft, almost non-existant, toneless humming he uses to focus himself when his fears threaten to break free.
I lean forward over him and murmur into his perfect shell of an ear. "Go down, boy."
The look in his eyes lets me know he would protest if he wasn't so very afraid of what I'd do if he did. I smile my reassurance and say, "Just enough to relax. I want you aware, pet."
He nods, trembling at the touch of my lips against his skin, but the humming quiets and I recognize the lovely clouding of his eyes that tells me he is sliding into sub space.
For a moment I wonder at the speed he races away to dwell in the safety of his mind, but I put it down to a desperate need. He has been gone a long time. Gone to hell as the man watching me had put it.
Using a guiding pressure, I ease Alex' head down to rest on my knee, stroking his hair, his face, cupping his fragile throat. I need him connected as he floats in his own special space.
"Connie was just following orders," The Goth-looking detective, Rodney, blurted out drawing my attention. "Spender said..."
"Spender?" I bristled at the name, my voice riding a tidal wave of rage I could not suppress. "Charles Spender?"
Alex whimpered even in his private space. I raked my fingers through his hair, letting him feel my presence, calming him.
Rose arched a brow. "You know him?"
"I would never of thought he'd dare such a move," I murmured more to myself than to them. "Damn bastard has more balls than..." I eyed Rose coldly. "You work for Spender?"
"No." He contradicted. "My squad was farmed out to his terrorism attack squad...Or that's what we were told."
"And that is because?"
Rose's eyes were cold, assessing. "We have a reputation for getting the job done."
"Tell me, Mr Rose," I sipped at my drink. "Why did Spender allow you to return my boy?"
"He didn't exactly have a choice in the matter."
"Ah." I smiled, thinking that over. "So, you are a thinking man."
Rose allowed himself a tight nod. "If you mean I won't be lead about by the nose. Yes."
A soft purring on my thigh told me that Alex was delving deeper into his sub mind-space. I stroked his hair, pulling him back.
"You are very alert to him." The one called Eddie commented.
"Alex is my other half," I explain to him, knowing Alex needed that confirmation and would process my words as well. "You ask if I would sell his contract to you, Rose? Why do you ask? What do you think you can you give him that he needs?"
"What would you say if I told you Alex was afraid to come back here? That he begged me to let him go so he could disappear?"
I laughed softly, caressing the long line of Alex' throat. "Did he? Yes, I would not have expected anything else."
Rose slants me a curious glance. "Oh?"
"Mmmmm," I nod, drawing Alex up into my lap. He sprawls against me, resting his head over my heart. "You see, to the outside world Alex is a strong man. In point of fact, he has a strong sense of self-preservation." I kiss the top of his head, inhaling his sweet scent. "But inside, he is also vulnerable. Before I claimed him, he survived by blending into the background. By secreting himself in the shadows. Considering what I suspect you and your men put him through with Spender's blessing, I would not have expected him to come away from the nightmare without wanting to hide and lick his wounds. But over time, I know he would have come home on his own. He needs me as much as I need him."
"You sound convinced of that." Rose murmured.
"I am." I shrug, tightening my arms around Alex. "We have a history." I smile softly. "It would not be the first time he has run away. Or the first time he has come back when he is ready."
"And his running away is all right with you?"
"All right?" I shake my head. "Not all right, but accepted." I can't restrain the sigh parting my lips. "Alex is who he is. Much as I wish he would resist the urge to flee when things get dark, I accept that it is a part of him. I care for him enough to let him work things out in his own way." I slant Alex a tender glance.
His smile is shy and oh, so very endearing. "Back are we?"
"Yes, sir."
I kiss his forehead, earning a blissed-out moan. "My pet is exhausted, gentlemen. Much as I appreciate your bringing him home, I have to call this evening to an end so I can tend to his needs."
Rose and his men get to their feet, as I lower Alex to his place on his knees and rise myself. Its a silent journey to the door, but I can feel the questions still lingering.
At the door, rose pauses, glancing back to where Alex waited for me.
"I love him, Rose," I tell him softly. "I will not let this destroy him. Count on it."
Rose met my gaze squarely. "I will."
I smile then. Rose is in love with my pet, its so obvious. Not in the way I love him, to be sure, but he does love my Alex.
And I'm all right with that, as well. "Drop around from time to time." I tell him, earning a disbelieving stare. I shrug. "Alex trusts you, or he wouldn't have allowed you anywhere near this apartment. That's not something he does easily." I offer him my hand. "Friends?"
Rose accepts my hand with a wide grin. "Friends." He glances back toward the living room. "Tell him I'll see him soon. Both of you, soon."
I nod toward Eddie and Rodney. "Bring your companions. We'll make a party out of it."
