Dave took his mechanic duties seriously. Someone could get hurt if a ride malfunctioned, after all--maybe even a little kid--and who wanted that on their conscience? He had a rough maintenance schedule that he more-or-less followed, checking on each ride periodically and making sure all the bolts were tightened properly and the engine parts running smoothly. But some rides had a special place in Dave's heart. Those required extra tender loving care. Like the 'Himalaya', a ride consisting of a series of cars on a circular wooden track that rose and fell in steep, swooping rises and dips. The ride wasn't particularly dangerous or complex, nor was it any older or more jury-rigged than any of the others.
What made the Himalaya so special to Dave was the vast, gloomy, empty expanse beneath its mountain peaks of timber and metal. He checked this area over carefully at least once a week, and then, patrons' safety assured and with the satisfaction of a job well done, stretched out on the ground in blissful privacy for a little nap.
