Carter noted that Graham was looking, if not completely well, then at least better than usual, but made no comment. He hated sympathy, no matter how well-intentioned, and so rarely offered it to others.
"You are terrifying," he quipped. "You ought to take another shot at the freak show. No act, just a white coat and a sign to let the rubes know you're a dentist. And I think I've made the transition fairly smoothly," Carter added modestly.
"Performers aren't all that different from the more mundane sorts of folks. They just like to think they're special."
