"Accounting is dull. Leave it to the accountants." He looked up at Marjan curiously as she went on.
"No, you wouldn't have," Carter said bluntly. "You'd have felt like dying, but you would have kept on. Found some kind of work to tide you over, just like the rest of us would have. Until the tide turned and you could get the show back together and have another go at it," he added, feeling generous.
Carter was a pessimist. He couldn't really envision any happy reunion scenarios if Czerwinski's had ever gone under, but it was nice to pretend that the bond their little carnival family shared would endure.
