It had been a long day, though a profitable one. Carter was in good spirits, glad for the chance to just sit down for a while and do nothing. Nothing, that is, but enjoy a hot meal. He made his way to a seat, nodding genially to a couple of cronies from the midway. Once he'd pulled himself up onto the bench, Carter muttered the Grace Before Meals he'd learned from the nuns at the orphanage as a kid. The little ritual was part superstition, part sincere, and entirely habit. Carter crossed himself, kissed the tips of his fingers piously, and then rubbed his hands together in anticipation. Dinner looked good. He reached for his knife and fork.
