With the need to drive out and scout looming on the horizon, it was important to make sure his car was in working order before he left in the morning. Breaking down during travel was one thing, breaking down when he was out alone was an entirely different matter. Not that he wanted to break down at all, it was a matter of pride. He liked to think that he did good work around the carnival. If his own car broke down, well, that would just be a huge blow to his professional ego.
He often wondered if he should leave Walt alone as frequently as he did. The redhead was unpredictable, and a bit of a troublemaker. It didn't seem unnatural to worry about him. What did seem unusual was how that concern had managed to extend itself to Howard.
It was probably the similarities between the geek and the daredevil. They were both so reckless, so stubborn. They'd probably get themselves killed if Emmett wasn't around to tell them to knock it off.
Those thoughts kept him from getting too bored while he wrench off some nuts and bolts, tuning up the engine and making sure she purred like a kitten the next time he started her up. The warmer weather had allowed him to remove his outer shirt, leaving only the undershirt. A bit of a blessing, as his arms were already smeared up to the elbows in grease and oil.
