It didn't do to just sit around and feel sorry for yourself all the time.
Evelyn still felt terrible about all that had happened and anxious about what was to come. She knew she still had hard conversations ahead of her, ones that were getting harder the longer she put them off. But she also knew the way forward wasn't to sit and sob and worry about it any longer than she already had. She'd gotten a reading from Beth and now she knew which directions things needed their little nudges in.
And if she noticed other people needed little nudges in the right direction, why, that was just the perfect thing to get her mind off her troubles, wasn't it? Helping someone else instead of wallowing in her own problems. Why, yes.
So at breakfast on Thursday, Evelyn invited Michael to tea that afternoon. Just the two of them, a chance to chat what with all the crazy things that had been going on. She spent the morning setting out china and a profusion of lace doilies.
And at lunch that same Thursday, Evelyn invited Eleanor to tea that afternoon. Just the two of them, a chance to chat what with all the crazy things that had been going on. She spent the early part of the afternoon setting the kettle on and laying out platters of treats.
By three that afternoon, she was peeking out her windows to see who would arrive first.
Sometimes people just needed little nudges in the right direction.
