Carter's brief encounter with Gil Godwin had been enough to convince him that the man was an inconsiderate idiot at best. At worst, the new showman was a reckless maniac. It was one thing for 'Edwin the Elusive' to risk his own life and health with his stunts, but his blatant disregard for superstition could affect the whole carnival!
He might have already affected Czerwinski's, Carter thought, half-inclined to blame Godwin for that bizarre night when he'd kissed Danny's little blind assistant. And then there was the recent illness plaguing half the carnies, and that kitchen debacle with the greasy, gamey-tasting venison. Godwin had a lot to answer for.
Carter knew it was just a matter of time before fate caught up to Gil Godwin. He'd be struck with bad luck for sure. But why wait for Lady Luck when Czerwinski's had their own voodoo queen? The sooner Godwin learned the error of his ways, Carter thought, the better. It was for the greenhorn's own good, too. In fact, this visit to Charlotte Laveau was a mission of mercy!
"Good evening, Miss Laveau," Carter greeted the voodooienne pleasantly. "I hope our stay in Portland is turning out to be profitable for you."
