Charlotte had not ever performed a public voodoo ritual. At least not by herself. When she was younger -- maybe thirteen -- she helped her grandmother once, but other than that she preferred to practice privately. Part of it was the fact that it was a very personal thing for her, and she didn't like putting that on display for strangers. The other part was that not many people outside of her own neighborhood understood voodoo, and humans had the terrible habit of fearing things they didn't understand and confronting them with anger and derision.
But the presence of Reverend Jeremiah and his evangelicalism so near by for the past week had put everyone on edge. The story of Marjan's confrontation with the preacher traveled quickly throughout the carnival, and Charlotte only wished she had been there to see her boss shoving the man around, shouting at him. The pair of them had their problems, sure, but when it came down to it, Charlotte respected Marjan and the guts she had to keep this place running, and she wasn't going to let some traveling religious fanatic win this battle.
Never one to sit quietly in the wings, Charlotte had been thinking about the best way to stir up something with the Reverend J herself. It seemed like there was nothing she could do, but then it hit her: why not fight fire with fire? She bet that if she performed a ritual and advertised it, she could get just as many -- if not more -- spectators. And afterward, she'd face the man herself.
Everything went smoothly. The place was crowded with people, both members of the caravan and the citizens of Buffalo and the surrounding area. Charlotte was glad, at least, that her "family" showed up, whether it was in support or because of curiosity, she didn't care. She felt confident that regardless of their reasoning, they would protect her if it came to that. Her nerves had dissipated as she began, and soon the people around her disappeared as she focused. Overall, she felt it was successful.
Afterward, the tall redhead moved about the crowd, speaking with people and answering questions, all the while scanning the many faces for Reverend Jeremiah. She wasn't overly concerned, however. He would come out of the woodwork... she had no doubt about that.
