{ Who } Rev. Jeremiah, Dave { What } the carnival sends out their David to battle the Pentecostal Goliath {Where } entrance to the carnival { When } about that time { Rating } PG
It didn't take much effort for Dave to move his act from the freak show to the carnival entrance. He simply walked out the gate and climbed up on the podium someone had conveniently placed there to raise him head and shoulders above the crowd.
Dave was dressed in his costume, a shapeless brown garment that resembled a monk's robe, tied with a rope belt. His hands and feet were bare, exposing the stigmata that he usually took such pains to keep hidden. A bible would have been a nice touch, Dave thought, but the God-fearing folk he was trying to lure into the carnival might take offense to a holey man bleeding on the holy scriptures. His own memory would have to do.
He had decided that Jesus's Sermon on the Mount would make a good opening recitation. Dave might hate performing, but he was no stranger to public speaking. His voice carried easily over the field to the striped tent set up across the way.
"'Blessed are the poor in spirit'," Dave began, "'for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.'"
