Elle, for lack of a better word, felt cheap. Thayer had made her feeling like the town whore for daring to accept a gift from a friend, and that horridious Delilah had only helped to make her feel worse. Three lifetimes, and it was the same old story. No matter what she did, she was reduced to nothing more than a cheap tart. And oh, while it hardly ever bothered her, right now it stung. It burrowed deep, niggling and twisting, searing her to her core. Were they right? Was she nothing more than a common slut? Three lifetimes, three that she could remember. Helen of Troy, the queen who threw it all away for love, and was stoned to death for it. Anne Boleyn, the aristocrat-turned-queen who turned England on its head, and again she died. And her last lifetime? Well, Marilyn Monroe. She was no true queen in title, but damned if she didn't earn her graces on the silver screen. But each time, even for all the pomp and fame that followed her, she was reduced to nothing more than a harlot. That much she remembered. Was she doomed, then, to keep repeating those mistakes? Would Elle Dubois become another notch in the bedpost of history, just as they had done? And what about when she died? Her flesh would decay, her bones would turn to dust, but her soul would go elsewhere. To another girl. To another future homewrecker. Was there no way to stop the pattern? Could she force her soul to go elsewhere, to somebody else? A man? Men always seemed to get away with it. Thayer was certainly no saint. Kennedy hadn't been, either. Nor had Henry. Paris, for his part, was too much of a sap to be of any importance, but nonetheless, his stupidity was rewarded rather than punished. And she, as always, suffered for it. Not this time, though. No. She refused. She wasn't going to be another damaged woman. Another doormat. Another fucked up, stupid, little broken heart. She was done with that. So very done. In her bed that night, with its broken headboard and sunken mattress, Elle made a promise to herself. No, a vow. A vow sealed with a kiss. She was going to get revenge on every single person who had ever wronged her, past and present. She was going to change things. God help her, she was going to get what she deserved. And this time, she was going to make it 'til the end. She was going to get her curtain call, her encore. |
