But if that is the demand doesn't that automatically mean that most working class shows are either gonna be soap operas or comedies?
Cop and Doctor and Alien Chaser shows are popular not just because they are upper class because they have a dramatic structure lends itself to having an exciting story that is wrapped up in one hour. Meet the badguy, bring down the badguy. Meet the disease, cure the disease. Bang. One hour of tv done.
Meanwhile if you wanna do blue collar life, you either have the workplace (which either includes the owners as much as the have-nots) or you just draw back to the family life which again usually ends up as soap opera or comedy.
That said, I do not think you should exclude cop shows on category. True, most coppers and cop shows do not qualify as blue collar, but there are cop shows that are intentionally set in a blue collar environment and deal with interacting with this environment (like The Wire for example). As opposed to cop shows where apparently only celebrities and company owners get killed (CSI Miami springs to mind).
