Sadly, yes.
Yes, I am reading less. In fact, I don't think I've read any fan fiction in almost six months. I haven't written anything in about that long either.
Mostly, it has to do with a return to work and school. I have found, since I began editing a literary rag, that I spend so much time reading submissions and editing things for publication that my creativity has dropped. Nights I would have spent reading holiday challenge responses are spent pouring over short stories and poems (or keeping up with a few shows on TV). Throw in homework, housework, and the normal care and feeding: you get zero on the fanish front.
Even so, I rarely use Google to search for fic. I ask friend who might be in the know where to find a mailing list or archive then branch out from there. Del.icio.us is another first stop. I used to go right to crack_van, but as I no longer load any LJ pages at all since my move away from there about a year ago, I have to resort to other means.
I'm making a real effort these days to keep in touch with online friends and in-the-know about my few fandoms. I still read enough RSS and posts elsewhere to keep up on most of the controversies and whatnot. Still, its tough. And I do miss things quite frequently these days. I can't help but wonder what that particular Google stat might mean with regard to fandom. Many of my older fandoms are complaining that they are "dying." The majority of stories posted there are either crossovers, AU/AR, or are ongoing stories which have been posted by installment for years. Perhaps there is some correlation between the Google stat and these developments?
